Don’t write Jayco off, they are value for money. You just need to be aware of potential issues. What I deem unacceptable others may see as being minor. And it could happen with any manufacturer.

Great video mate. I own a tandem axle Windsor rapid that I bought 2nd hand 10 years ago. No issues at all. I too would like to put a solar system in to have more options where to camp. When I was looking at vans I was told don't buy a new jayco. Only buy a 2nd hand one, because warranty issues would have been fixed by then.

Gday mate. Get yourself a set of hanging collapsible shelves for your bedside cupboards and leave them there permanently. Just about first thing we did. We hang nothing. Works great and as they’re only 3/4 the width of the cavity, you can still stuff a jacket/s in behind.

Hey mate great video's. I have a jayco journey outback 17.58-3 and 100% agree with you. We love the van and it suits us but jayco's quality and workmanship is terrible. We haven't had the issues you've had but minor things like no silicone in the shower, peeling vinyl and bench edging, electrical joins and also window/door gaps. All minor things I have repaired myself but they shouldn't happen in the first place. I also wouldn't buy another one at this stage.

The Jayco problem is poor quality and low grade fittings and fixtures that have a limited life. But the biggest problem from my experience is the cupboards and bed and seat bases made out of very thin chipboard type product that has limited strength and long term durability My van had cupboard doors fall off when the screws pulled out of the cupboard framing and moisture ingress from a leaking roof that had a 4” wide silicon seal hiding a join issue between the roof sections that were not abutting each other as they should. The cupboards started to loose their internal white vinyl (thin as hell) lining and crumble ever so slightly. The floor had unsealed or poorly sealed gas, water and electrical penetrations and even had in 2 locations 3 holes drilled for a single pipe, and 2 of them were obviously in the wrong location and were covered up with a big wad of silicon that was starting to lift off the underside of the floor. Windows and entry door are low grade and the stupid idea to fit curtains is so stupid , annoying, useless, dirt catching and non functional that it annoyed me to hell. What a 60s era concept in a 2014 built van Would I ever buy a Jayco again? NO chance, too many short cuts and compromises for me I will say in a positive way that their van layouts and functionality are generally very good and they have appeal untill you look deeper and push, pull and slam a few doors and windows! If you need a van for a single trip, buy a Jayco- but if it’s your forever van- go elsewhere, pay more and look for quality and the strength of its internal structure before you commit Hope this helps

We sold our Jayco because of similar issues. Extremely poor workmanship and attention to detail. Drawers falling apart, nose cone cracking (screws straight through instead of drilled pilot holes) Just got tired of taking it back for warranty repairs.

It looks like you got the van that missed all the checks, I purchased a 2018 Jayco Journey 19-61.2 OB new and after 3 years of ownership we are very happy with it so far and the only problem we had was the hot water system stopped working on mains power when we were parked at Uluru (Ayers Rock) we just switch to gas for the rest of the journey, and Prestige Jayco in Geelong fixed the problem when we got back, I think it's just the luck of the draw as on our last trip we spoke to an owner of a much more expensive van not Jayco and on his first trip in this van and he had a hole list of issues one real serious issue was that when he hooked up his BBQ to the gas bayonet he got a electrical shock and this guy paid something like $90K for this van so there you go and I'm sure that there are other stories like that with other manufacturers. As long as the Warranty is honored and repairs are carried out it should be all good, you can say that it shouldn't have happened in the first place but it does and not just with Jayco either

I don't think that manufacturer is the main issue, after all they do sell around half of all vans locally. A family member had a Coromal that leaked so bad the floor in the bathroom was close to rotted through and a work mate with a Nova has a leak in the roof right above the bed and is waiting for repairs. The worst thing about it is the waiting around for repairs and worrying is it going to happen again.

Don’t bother buying another one, we had 5 different jayco vans and they were all the same, but an Evernew or similar no problems there, yes, are more money but you get what you pay for and same when comes to resale. Employees on the assembly lines at jayco couldn’t care less and they aren’t trades people. It’s a shame that no matter what your budget is a jayco still costs a lot of money for a wobble box that spends more time getting fixed than you’ll ever get on the road. Get rid of it before tackling gravel roads because you’ll have nothing left to sell. 😎

I'm I've got friends that have spent $100000 on vans and had multiple issues some were unfixable and had their van replaced. I understand Jayco are cheaper and thats what I can afford and going to pickup a new Journey 16.67.5 and I'm much more aware to look for these issues and look at sorting as many as I can. I guess there is always a compromise.

Here Here, quality assurance is cheap and with the amount of time people say " i had it fixed under warranty" it would save them money. We're having weight issues with our 16.51-3. Being our third jayco we decided to down size but upgrade. HUGE mistake should have stuck with daylight axles. Going to follow you switch to lithium. Hopefully save 30kgs (2 x lead acid). Every time we think about an addiction or change the first thing we ask is how many kilograms is it going to cost.

I have a Journey Outback that had a crack in the roof over the loo, a water leak internally from the outside shower. Jayco said it was a 4 month wait time. I told them I wouldn’t except a 4 month wait with a leaky van, booked in the next week. Jayco are about “volume”, they have 48% market share in Australia, that means that literally every 2nd caravan on the road is a Jayco. Many people have the same issues, yet Jayco won’t address the problems, they just keep pumping them out and follow up during warranty visits. Jayco were affordable, and in some respects still are, but their top-tier vans are now over 100k, so look around peeps, there’s lots of competition out there. When you buy a Jayco and something as simple as a decal being so obviously crooked, there’s a fundamental issue in their factory when it comes to “quality control”, that’s the most disappointing aspect.

Great video Mate, the problems you're having are a bugger. I'm now on my 3rd Jayco van & agree with your assesment of them being built to a price... but I honestly think they are value for money regardless. Yes they do have a reputation for poor quality BUT as you said they are the biggest van manufacturer in Oz, so I would be curious as to the warranty claims they have compared to other manufacturers & the percentage difference. If Jayco have only 1 problem for every 50 vans sold & another company has 1 problem for only 25 vans sold I know which one I'd buy! Go back to your dealer, stick it to them!
@ianbray8687

@Mario Gerada Maybe you never fully understood my comment. Yes, Jaycos have their problems BUT so do ALL other Caravan manufacturers. The only reason you hear so much about Jaycos is that they own approx 50% of the Australian market. Look at Toyota, yes they have their faults too BUT their percentage of issues is much less than other manufacturers because of the amount of vehicles they sell AND at the cost of their vehicles compared to others.....BETTER VALUE FOR MONEY.

I get so worried when I watch these videos. I can’t really afford a more expensive van and even if I could, who do I trust? For me, the worry would be the leaks. They are just unacceptable really. The difficult thing is that some people are lucky and have no or very little problems. That is the real problem...inconsistency in manufacturing and servicing. In yr travels, what caravans have a good reputation?

Plenty of people with Jayco’s who’ve had no issues. They also have a large dealer network for backup and service. Jayco have always been cheap and nasty, the problem is that they get away with it so there’s no incentive for them to do any better. The problems you pointed out seem trivial enough but to me, it’s an indication of the manufacturer’s attitude towards their customers. They don’t care that minor problems can quickly turn into bigger ones, the last thing you’d want mid way into a trip of a lifetime, ruining the experience.

Being a plumber & gasfitter I’d rip that pathetic pipe work out & do it correctly & flash up all the gaps & leaks. It’s just not worth taking it back & getting those unskilled flunkies attempting to fix things that they have no trade qualifications to fix things. I gotta Jayco swift & haven’t had any real issues. I reckon there better than a lot of off-road camper trailers that are basically a roof top tent on a trailer & the stove & sink pull out the side? Nah i wanna cook inside if its raining or 47deg out in Longreach with a trillion flies buzzing around everywhere. But I’ve met lotsa people & read & youtube watched & a lot of other brands have bad issues. They should all be regulated like building a home or modifying a car/engine everything is inspected & scrutinised & passed & proof of Licenced installers. But these caravans that cost $30 up to $150k seem to get past all that proper scrutiny & have flunkies doing work that is illegal & rough as guts, holes to big filled with silicone & pipes & wire’s that is all of poor quality.

The industry is self regulated so they can do what they want and do! The workmanship is shit at best, and the rest like electrical and plumbing is usually carried out by sub-contractors. What you have pointed out wouldn't happen if they had quality inspections along the process of assembly, so that is a sure sign it doesn't happen. To be perfectly honest, you've just bought a piece of shit, stapled and siloconed together. Take that van over corrugations and see what's left after 200 kms of travel. Some of the Chinese imports are being put together better than Jayco now, that's why their prices have increased. $45,000 to $70,000 for a Jayco and put together like that is a disgrace.
