Today on the channel I am driving the Jaguar XKR75. Conceived as a birthday gift to celebrate Jaguar's 75th, it was a project started out of hours by Ian Callum and Mike Cross.
Featuring a raft of upgrades to the car's styling and performance, it debuted at Goodwood in 2009, before going on sale in a slightly more subdued hue. Today I get to drive what could be one of the finest Jaaaaags of all time.

I have never really had the sense that my 2012 XKR changed the steering weight when in dynamic mode. I had a quick read of the service manuals for both the facelift car and the early car and it describes that the power steering rack is variable ratio for parking, plus there is a 'servotronic' system which is electronically controlled to change the weight. However, the weight control is only speed sensitive. Additionally there is a set of steering maps but these are selected with the vehicle configuration file based on vehicle model and tyre fitment - so that's a manufacturing time thing or dealer change, not a run-time thing. So I conclude that the only reason it feels like the steering weight changes in dynamic mode is that you're driving it faster in the test and it's the speed sensitive part you're feeling.

the XR truly is the British Mustang, such timeless design, the older I have become the more attractive this car has become to me, regardless of package the XR is just a gorgeous piece of machine, with a glorious soundtrack to go along with, I have looked these cars around, sadly they are basically out of reach for the regular folk, which makes me so jealous of Britain's second hand prices, you guys are truly blessed, cheers !

Please don't say a Mustang! Mustangs are cheap and nasty things that can't even go in a straight line fast without chucking itself into the nearest roadside ditch or tree! Jags have class and luxury. The only similarity is the V8 and RWD. A Mustang is closer in reality and purpose to a Focus ST, reasonably priced, decent performance and reasonable practicality.

we may be blessed with the up-front cost of the car here in Britain, but trust me, we get stung hard for insurance, road tax, and especially fuel, in the US, even with current price rises, petrol is stupidly cheap compared to the price we pay in Britain, it's getting scarily close to £2 per litre, diesel is even closer to that mark, so in the long run, one of these is probably cheaper elsewhere! 😅

I am the owner of this car that James reviewed here. He made a comment on my car and possibly some of the other XKRs that he has reviewed that the six speed ZF was reluctant to when driving in normal mode too change down a gear or gears. This was at the time a comment I completely agreed with. But I just wanted to update the review that, that particular aspect of the car in the past week has had a full gearbox service and oil change done. This cost approximately £150 but has been money well spent as the gearbox performance has generally improved and sharper and particularly with its willingness to change down a gear or gears. Additionally since James’ review I have had The Apple car play system fitted to link up with my iPhone 11. This has greatly enhanced and modernised the entertainment and communication systems in the car. Roger.

Glad to hear Roger - those auto box services are often overlooked, and can make such a difference! They should have stayed part of the service schedule but lots of companies cheaped out when introducing service packs and made them "lifetime" items (yeah, right)

It’s interesting to to see that so many people who love the XKR don’t like the F Type R. I’ve got a 2015 F Type R and would happily park an XKR next to it in my garage if it weren’t for the idea that my wife would kill me for having done so. The F Type R successfully wooed a younger audience which is something Jag really did need. Cadillac has been trying for years and can’t get it right. Every time I drive my F Type I see enthusiasts in their twenties looking at it getting excited about Jaguar. I think it was a great move and it’s definitely a true Jaaaaaaag. I love the XKR too. I still look at the prices from time to time.

The XKR meets all the criteria of cars that I shouldn’t have parked in my garage: -long-hood -narrow-body -outdated-infotainment system -bouncy-ride (when driven slow) -70s looking interior (seats, doors, dashboard) -wrong color exterior in a sports car (black!) -etc… But after watching so many videos talking about it being the best hidden jewel in the GT world and probably becoming a future classic I was tempted to drive one. And boy they were absolutely right! I bought one here in California in May 2022 and I am super fascinated by the ton of potential this car has, this car is really a carmodder’s dream!!! 15,000 bought me a stock 2007 XKR w/ 4.2 supercharged engine with barely 70k miles; I think this is a steal for the price and I am so excited about the big changes I’ll be able to make to this car for less than $4000!!! -lowering-springs and spacers $1100 (parts & labor) -side-fins from an Audi RS5 to make car look even lower $300 (since sideskirts for the XKR are so hard to find) -paint-correction $500 (paint is still good for a more than 10-year old car though) -powder paint wheels & exhaust 🛞 to black $600 -blackout front grilles, side, and rear emblems $500 -black Alcantera interior ceiling upholstery $350 -change all interior/exterior bulbs to white LEDs $60 -remove F19 fuse that controls the active valve system, keeping valves open 100% of the time for better, throatier, raspier sound! FREE!!! The looks and handling of this car is going to be even more amazing than the enthusiast here claim it to be… I will upload before/after pictures when I am done with my project 😎🍻 BTW… the car sitting next to it in my garage is 10-years newer and over $100k more, a $2017 Carrera S. 2007 XKR = Great Value for your money! 💵

Compared to the XKRS I like the rear end and the spoiler on the XKR75 better, it just looks like it's supposed to be on the car, and not a bolt on after thought like the RS cars. I very much liked , and still think the XK series is a very lovely design and the boost to the 5 Liter engine made all the difference to the GT performance of the car. With that engine and supercharger you have torque for days wherever and whenever you want or need it,...and that burble turned roar is such an addictive noise!! If I were in the market again for a GT car now that I'm in my 50's the Jaguar XKR and limited variants are very attractive and suit my needs much better than the Toyota Supra Turbo I had in my late 20's and early 30's.

Absolutely thrilled that you you’ve finally reviewed an Xkr-75! I have had mine for just over 4 years and I’ve loved it to bits - it turns heads everywhere I go (probably because of that growl). You nailed the changes they made and you were right that the actual power produced is higher than specified, in mine, by about another 17 bhp. But it is a product of all those changes the engineers made and never disappoints me… except for the tyres. I thought I had a problem when I first collected her and for a few months due to it being unsettled and a little unnerving with the backend being very happy to give you a few surprises. It turned out to be old PZeros and after I changed them for the P4S’s, the difference was nothing short of astounding both in the wet as well as the dry. Just one of their thing - for those iPhone owners out there, there are a few apple CarPlay solutions available out there all thanks to the wiring installed for the rear parking camera that wasn’t. Not cheap though. Thanks for the review as always - brilliant work.

I think the Jaguar is better looking than the equivalent Vantage of the period, and is certainly rarer, the Vantage was almost ubiquitous where I live, but no doubt the Jaguar loses out on snob value.

I don't think Jagdroid is available for the X150 is it? That system is quite different to the stuff in the X350. Had a quick look on the website, couldn't see any evidence of availability.

This is a drive through North Yorks scenery tourer. Seldom pushed on. Occasional on a long straight. Not a twisties but at 45 I’m never in an Exige to want to. I drive slow. It’s ride cum steer feel I desire. With sound. . XKR75 / XK Exhaust delete not heard of. Middle section delete doesn’t half put a smile on the face. It’s a beautiful package.

Never had a problem with the rear seats. I'm 6"5' and fit in the back of my uncle's XKR just fine. Been comfortable back there up to about 100 miles. Maybe it's a side effect of growing up in the back of various coupés.

Hy, many thanks for this review! Sorry for the late comment but did you get the chance to drive the 2008 XKR-S as it is dramatically hard to find any real test drive of this previous (very rare) version of the XKR, less powerfull but also with a supposed better handling ?

The daddy Jag is music to my ears, I am sick of four pot fake sounds piped into speakers 🔊 and mapped exhaust with fake snaps, crackle and pops that sound like a clown 🤡 is inside the car boot smashing pots and pans together whilst they driving 100 miles in a 20mph zone. Sad these soulless computer aided cars needs to driven fast and yet the owners always want more bhp. This Jag is from that golden era when sports and GT had distinctive sounds, even Scoobies had its signature flat four sound. This Jag is so refreshing and a brutal reminder of the superiority of a V8 especially those NA engine with unrestricted sounds. Sorry for my rant I feel better now to cope with London’s menace of fake pop and bang championed by four pot hatch backs that can hit 0 - 60 quicker than a rabbit gets f**ked! 😀

These are nice cars, not sure the 75 gives much over a regular XKR, they are very good & well underrated. The values tell the story, clearly people like them....pretty much the polar opposite to a similar era 6 Series....

Do you think the aspects that were learnt building this were applied to the F-Type? However, driving the F-Type R AWD I don't understand why it has 8 speeds, I see no major difference between 7 & 8 speed (a few rpm) but you can attain top speed (apparently) of 186mph in 6th gear! Great review as usual thanks.

186mph! That is crazy! If I owned this beast I would literally HAVE to take a trip to Germany to experience that insane top end. I would also most certainly lose my licence here in the UK haha!
@ChrisFEJackson

@@davekennedy6315 Top end only bragging rights really, I can only use some of the power, but it's a nice to have. I've driven in Germany a few times and not all sections of autobahn's are speed limit free, if you get caught you are fined, heavily, not that I have. But i wouldn't go there specifically to do 186mph :) I do use the limiter in this car when driving because it's easy to creep up your speed without realising such is the quality. If anything I am more mindful about my speed more in this car than I have been in any other performance cars I have owned, if that makes sense.
@ChrisFEJackson

@@AntoniusTyas for sure @70 mph in 8th gear the rpm is approx 1100-1200 in normal auto (D) drive
