Toyota GR Yaris vs Lancia Delta Integrale Evo 2 - Is The Yaris As Good As A Real Rally Legend?

Thanks to our good friend Ben I have been able to come out and have another go of the baffling but brilliant Lancia Delta Integrale Evo 2. This time round, there's a twist - as I'm comparing it with the all new Toyota GR Yaris. Nearly three decades separate these two, but both were created for the same reason - as proper homologation specials.
The Yaris may not actually ever get to compete, but does it have the same genes that have made the Integrale such an icon?

Even if the Yaris never hits a start line in WRC it's been a stroke of genius on the part of Toyota. From nowhere they have become the only hot hatch maker that anyone actually enjoys driving. Forget your Golf R.

Funny, the steering was one of the highlights of the Lancia back in the day. As was the truly astonishing 215hp, unseen in an hatch. Are you sure the tracking is right? Most old cars are sadly right out.. and excessive toe-out destroys the steering.

I am utterly amazed Toyota built a modern skunk works manual rally car given current regulations, let alone one as good as this. To those that own one, never sell it there will never be a car like this again. One for sunday drives when all ICE cars are banned in a few years time. I want one … I had a lancia from new, LHD is a pain at car parks but the damn thing was so unreliable, it spent 12 of the first 18 months at the dealership being repaired from a constant stream of faults by which point it has to go. Back in those days with no traction control and poorer tyres, we can actually be thankful we did not have a powerful car if we used to push it back then. You needed proper caution. The crashes with the faster cars were faster... A friend worked for a company called Datel and told me his boss and two others died in a Mac f1. Eton Musk totalled his showing off to his PayPal founder who asked him, "so what can it do?" Musk floored it in a straight line and immediately span off the road.

I have a gr Yaris on order for very late 2022. I could have got it earlier when I ordered back in the spring, but must be about the only person in the country that actually asked Toyota to delay delivery. By that stage we will have a much better idea of price trajectory, what used market will do with these- depreciation/ appreciation wise. It could go either way and my deposit is refundable. Having said that, I'm not expecting to make money on the thing, they made far too many for that, just, if it looks like owning one for a couple of years could work out cheapish due to ongoing 'last of an era' hype, it will be a fun thing to do. I had an Integrale in the 90s. A white 8valve one with the rhd conversion. They were converted with a standard fiat tipo rack, which meant they went from the quick 2. Something turns lock to lock on the LHD cars to 3. something turns. This was the major issue with these cars, along with rust, poor electrics etc. You either had to live with driving a LHD, or shit steering, either of which made them disappointing to live with. I smashed mine up in the snow and still sold it at a small profit even factoring in the cost of repairs and a full respray. Although I did give 2.5 k for it in the first place which helped in that.

Glad you changed your mind on the GR Yaris. Sadly, like you say, it will never race as it was planned to be the homologation special for 2021. Now we all know that Covid interfered with Toyota's plans, FIA decided to twist the rules and allow constructors to run the 2020 model through 2021. However, next year the homologation special will have to show some sort of hybridation to be allowed to race in WRC in 2022. So the future GR Yaris is bound to look just about the same from the outside, and seemingly, Toyota could end up making some money on this car seeing that they have decided to make more than 25 000 units due to the unexpected demand for the GR Yaris all over the world. Last year when I ordered mine in December, Toyota had allocated only 300 units for the French market, but there are more than 1000 orders more on waiting list since June when I received mine...

The people who call sell-I-ca’s sell-I-ca’s are known as Americans and my teacher at school told us that they can only see things as if looking in a mirror; so everything is reversed and also that they pee out of the mouth- or a tube opening within the mouth but not well understood. Never looked in to it but this video reminded me of it. Americans we were taught are a race with the reversed vision, the ejection mouth, primitive evolutionary progress as compared to European or eastern blood lines. That was what we were taught in the 90’s to explain it but don’t know if it is still taught. It did make sense because some of the products they produce etc were very primitive and things must be simplistic for the users understanding as well as everything inverted as if viewed through a mirror. So there is some evidence for what Mr Albion taught us after all - but as I said I don’t know whether they still think so these days. A lot has changed since way back when I was in the classroom.

I remember taking my friend to a Lancia dealer to test drive an Integrale. We went in my car as, at the time, I owned a Renault 5 GT Turbo (which was about 2.5 years old) and he owned an old Fiat 128 and felt that my car would be more credible for us to arrive in (which proved to be correct). As it turned out, I knew more about the car than the sales person (telling him things about it that, had he been a 'petrol head' would have known). Sadly I didn't get to drive it (as I wasn't 'looking to buy it'), but it was a couple of levels above my 5 GTT in performance terms - a memorable experience...😊

Back in the mid 90's, I had the option of an Integrale, Escort Cosworth or the Sunny GTiR. I picked the Sunny as i thought on a back to back test, the Sunny was the better car for a daily, something confirmed by a friend with a mallard green Escort. on numerous blasts out in the Derbyshire countryside. I see the Yaris as the modern equivalent of the Sunny, if it wasnt for me swapping to to a P85D and my need for a more serene place to be, I would have one now. Although perhaps its not aimed at a 50+ year old, even if he still thinks he is 20.

Father had 2 maseratis and the Quattroporte, brand new, some years ago now had significant electrical problems affecting the manual gearbox paddles override etc... Had to be recovered whilst driving abroad. Fingers crossed the GR Yaris continues the toyota reliability legacy. Otherwise, it's the slightly yawn worthy German alternatives....😏

Well, as for the concern about the GR Yaris having a go or not in the WRC, it's May 22nd, 2022 as I write these lines, and after 4 rounds of the championship, includind the Rally of my Country (Portugal), the Toyota has claimed its 3rd victory in a row with Kalle Rovampera. Even better, it claimed 1st, 2nd and 4th today, with Elfyn Evans and Takamoto Katsuta being beaten to 3rd by Dani Sordo in a Hyundai i20 Rally1 in the very last (Powerstage) moment. Even knowing that there are few technical resemblance between the standard GR Yaris and the Rally1 spec car, in my opinion Toyota nailed it for marketing purposes. This car in real life is on a good way to become an icon of its own. And how i'd love to get my hands on one...

I think the reason for GR Yaris' success - and it is true, you see more and more of them cropping up - is that it is perfect for the roads of today in this country, and urban environments, for the b-road squirts, and an easy size to park and chuck about... but with a hot chilli up its bottom. It harks back to an era when hot hatches were actually small. Today, hot hatches are enormous! 😉

true.. but not only in uk. I don't think anywhere on this planet, bar the us, the roads are bigger or wider. On my favourite roads near me, if I see a tractor driving towards me, I know my right side wheels will get in the dust/dirt/pebbles outside the asphalt, as for sure we will not fit both on the road. parked next to one, my 10 year old fast Leon looked huge. I never wanted a car more than this small gry but, yeah, life and a big house renovation meant I had to give up my allocation last year... and now, they are all sold out in my country until the end of 2023. Only SH market if I will want to buy one.. and the fveckers are charging up to 8k-10k extra for below 1000 kms ones.

The Yaris has to be technologically superior to a 30 year old 'equivalent' car, it wouldn't just be shocking, it'd be embarassing if wasn't, but you have to remember the Integrale is from the time of the Sierra Cosworth and Audi Quattro, and it comprehensively beat them both. That's where it's legendry status comes from. As for the steering and gearchange, well it's a 30 year old car, even if it's refurbished, it's still a 30 year old car. So I think some allowance has to be made for the age gap ... Will the Yaris fare so well against the hydrogen cars of 2050 I wonder ... here's a tip though ... if you want 90% of the driving experience of an Integrale for a fraction of the cost, try a Delta HF Turbo, I bought one new, in preference to an Integrale, back in 1990, because the Integrale was too good to have fun with, the HF Turbo allows you to have safe fun on the public roads a lot easier and it still has that impecciple balance and soul!

And all integrale were left hand drive... only the 2wd cars up to the hf turbo could be bought RHD from the factory.... all RHD integrale are conversions in the UK.
