The other point that they are a dangerous distraction is an arguable point depending on the capability of the vehicle's pilot!

I’ve recently purchased an Arteon R-line shooting brake. I test drove a variety of other cars prior to purchasing the Arteon but when it came down to finding a big practical car with all the gadgets and a fairly sensible engine the Arteon was a clear leader for me. I got serious deal on an ex Demo, saving myself nearly 10k off list price! I’d 100% recommend these to anyone looking for an upmarket practical estate 😎

Car commercials over here in the states show young 20 somethings driving around laughing singing and being saved from drifting into an enormous truck by lane keep assist. Earlier versions on a say 18 plate for example are equally as plush inside but have regular controls on the dash and steering wheel. As a happy CC owner I regularly monitor the used prices of these as I love them. I view these completely as a new version of my beloved CC. A high spec R Line on an 18/68 plate is high teens at the moment. As soon as they reach nearer the 10-12 k region I'm pulling the trigger on a Turmeric Yellow R Line 100%
@smiddlehurst1
@smiddlehurst1 3 жыл бұрын
Great review as always but it does highlight two things I can't wrap my head around with VW at the moment. First, the price. Is it just me or have VW somewhat lost the plot? No better example than the performance Golf models IMO. GTI starts at, what, £33.5k? Somewhere around £37K for the clubsport and £40k for the R and that's before you add any kit (of which there's a surprisingly large amount). A Civic Type R GT with the most expensive colour option comes in around the same base price as the Clubsport! Or, if you want to go the other way, a BMW 128 or 135 run about the same as their Golf equivalents. And it's the same pretty much everywhere in the range with VW products running big price premiums over Skoda / Seat but nowhere near the quality uplift of, say, an Audi and with standard kit levels that feel like a tribute to mid-90's BMW's. Leaves them stuck in a (very pricey) middle ground. And second, of course, is those touch controls! To be clear I've got no problem with tech in cars. By all means put big touchscreens and the like in but the controls the driver *should* be using (i.e. steering wheel) need to be useable without looking down. For that reason I'd prefer knobs for climate control as well but could just about live with the touch sliders here as at least they're in their own little section. What on earth they were thinking with the new Golf / ID dashtop mounted sliders though I've got no idea! The thought of a touch sensitive slider that isn't backlit just boggles the mind. Same with the steering wheel controls being touch sensitive. I'd kinda sorta maybe get it if it made them configurable (i.e. an actual screen) as that might be a benefit to some people. But this just seems a worse way of doing things for the simple reason of saving a buck or two in component prices.

Hi I purchased a 6 month old ex dealer principle car in 2018 , so the GT version of today, saw the Arteon first on youtube at the a motor show ,loved the look . Got the 280 bhp R line with 10k of options for a lot less than the list price of that one . The A5 is not the same car its feels so much smaller and is not as great a place to be. The old Arteon does not have the touch sensitive controls, easy to find without looking. I love it . Been in a VW for now 22 years use the same VW service centre in Maidenhead UK , Great guys. Still see my old 2008 Passat sport its going strong , but not as clean .

Great to see the Arteon getting some Love. I'm on my second RLine hatch back and will be buying (leasing) third soon. One thing to note. The earlier cars don't have the touch controls on steering wheel and Hvac, they have proper buttons. Both my cars have been the 190 bhp petrol engine. There is loads of shove and the fuel economy is very good on a run. Great cars and sure to be a second hand Bargain.

I'd never even heard of this car before today. It appears to be a very nice, handsome vehicle and, although expensive, an extremely well put together, comfortable and practical way of transporting your friends and family from here to there. Unfortunately, being an up market VW, like the Phaeton, it will depreciate like crazy. If one can afford to not worry about such things though, I'd say it makes a much more interesting choice of car than many of it's rivals, from the likes of Mercedes, BMW and even Audi.

The touch climate controls are a step back indeed but they are very easy to use and do not require any swipes, you can simply press. @@papa_pt Or I could have (if I lived in Europe) a VW...Passat Estate or a Skoda Superb for less money! Again, I don't think VW knows what they're doing. If I want (to pay for) upscale, I don't want it having a VW nameplate. If I end up buying a Touareg or Phaeton, it'll be a couple years after they've depreciated significantly.

Used for 2 years i think it would be much more affordable, when we take into account that a lot of us can't buy a new vehicle. I think it is a very good car for a family that can only have one vehicle due to finances or lack of space.

Good list of stuff we don't need or even want. Sport suspension, Big wheels, touch controls, dark glass. Save some money, and possibly some lives, and make the car easier to use. Do the marketing dep't need to get out more?

Sat in one at the dealers and it grew on me with the space and frame-less door windows. If you're going to start reviewing my potential new family car list then please be the first to do a video on a 3 series diesel estate in SE Pro spec as I've no idea if the fake leather interior and less adjustable seats are a huge downgrade because dealers never have anything other than M Sport cars to look at. And I'd like to see a review of non m-sport suspension with 17" wheels. Try to get in a 330d a Sport Pro as well whilst you are at it...😂

Mmmm. Arteon. Stunning. R for me please. This button nonsense, or lack thereof, is madness.

Yep - the Superbs I test drove 5 years ago simply didn't do it for me, as a chauffeur - I really wanted to like it (that's why I tried FIVE TIMES), but it simply felt and *sounded* like a cheap, standard car. I particularly noticed the road rumble sound, and general intrusion of ambient sound. I recently tried a Passat, and it was great, so I assume the Arteon will be similar, if not better again. What I'd actually like would be a VW or Audi version of the lift-back Superb. The reason is that the lift-back Arteon has insufficient rear head room, and whilst the Shooting Brake would probably solve that problem, I don't like the shape - I'd lose some work just because of the shape. Re the Passat - it's just a bit small for use as a limo.

They do the capacitive buttons because it's fewer moving parts from fewer mouldings in the factory, causing fewer warranty claims and therefore is cheaper for Volkswagen Group.

2 linked points to add: sales figures show that this is really aimed at the Chinese market (who like longer wheelbases and more rear legroom); also it's 5 inches longer than the A4 yet it's on the MQB (Golf) platform

this is just a Skoda Superb with some better quality materials. Skoda Superb Estate is a great car, good value people mover. But can we get rid of the touch sensitive fake buttons? All, or nearly all tests are saying the same thing. They are not selling very well in Australia either.

If I was replacing an Avensis I wouldn't suggest any German car. I would pick a Mazda 6 estate or new Toyota Camry and also save a lot of money.

This is a car I might have suggested my 70-year-old parents take a look at, but the touchy-nonfeely-disappeary buttons kill that idea immediately. Hopefully it's a fad that will look dated and silly by the end of the decade.
