Her voice is a perfect example of an Irish lilt I think it has something to do with the Irish accent. That yodeling is known as keening an Irish wailing often used during funerals as a form of grieving. The best example of this you can see is U2 live at Slane Castle (2001), the bridge between the songs All I want is you and Where the streets have no name when Bono begins keening for his father who's funeral he had attended earlier that day before the concert

Sadly, Dolores O'Riordan was but 46 years old when she left us. Gone too soon for sure. Her keening (sound of Irish grieving) still hits you straight in the heart even after almost 30 years.

Love The Cranberries, and Dolores' vocals, including the great harmonies she layers her lead vocals with - that's as much a part of their sound as the keening. IMHO, the Cranberries were as much as part of the 90's sound as Nirvana and all the grunge bands, who were phenomenal. One of the other big female led alt-rock band of the 90's was The Sundays, whose lead singer is Harriet Wheeler. You should hit them too. Start with "Here's Where the Story Ends". Howdy hi hi Janel! Oh, yeah, I fell in love with her voice the first time I heard it as well. On the day she died, she was set to revise her lyrics for the song zombie with the group Bad Wolves. They went ahead and released the song and gave all the proceeds to her children. That woman knew some real heart break in her life. And I think that's what we hear in her voice as she belts out these hauntingly beautiful pieces.

Hi Jamel - you mentioned Fleetwood Mac so thought I'd let you know that the Cranberries do live cover of Fleetwood Mac's Go Your Own Way. It's very good. You get a sense that they really respect Fleetwood Mac and do them proud with their version.

Love, love, love this song. Bought this CD before a left on solo drive to Ottawa from Toronto back in the day, and wore it out. Always used to buy a new CD or 2 for long trips - then when you hear those songs again, they have so many memories attached.

This is basically a perfect song. Hits hard from the drop, lulls you into bliss with the fantastic vocals, and closes like a banger, with an iconic ending.

The simplicity of this song is what makes it beautiful, it's an unadulterated expression of a girl's first love. There's nothing vulgar or tacky, it's honest, sincere and as Dolores knew when she wrote it, ultimately naive.

My younger brother was the drummer in the band I had in the mid-60s. I was 17 and he was 15. He had a beautiful kit and the drum track on this song is the way I always wanted his to sound. It was close, especially the twin toms and the floor tom.

The song was used on an ad to visit Ireland. It was also used in a couple of moviee, You've got mail, being one of them. Probably my favourite song by them. What a voice, sadly missed ....

I remember hearing Dreams just made me become really like Wow about Dolores O'Riordan's voice and made me a fan! I remember buying the cassette tape and listening to it on my walkman in 1993-94 as a teenager.

You will hear that same sound from many Irish artist. In particularly those from the west coast of Ireland where Dolores was from Limerick. There’s a traditional type of music called Sean-nós (old Style) in that tradition they have a sound call Keening it’s a lament conveying deep loss.

As others have mentioned, that wailing kind of singing is called Keening in Ireland. There are similar types of vocals in scandinavian music, Swiss (yodelling) , Portuguese (fado) and even native American. Loved your reaction ...the drums , guitar and oh my that bass. But there is no doubt Delores vocals are what made it a classic
