When Cocker died, McCartney said this version was “mind-blowing” and was forever grateful for turning the song into a soul anthem. When it was first released, Lennon and McCartney sent him a telegram of thanks and congratulations, and took out an ad in the papers thanking him. Cocker was backed up by an all-star band in the recording.

Funny enough, the drummer is my best friend's dad. He passed away in 1990. Love hearing this song!

My father did and I have scoured endlessly for a pic of him at Woodstock. He has said Joe Cocker was one of the best performing that day

When I watch these videos from my teens/20s, I'm still AMAZED at how great the music was in the late 60s and the 70s. The music reflected the times, and the changes that were happening in the world. Sometimes, things were bad but, more often it was magical and I feel so lucky to have grown up when I did.

Respect for the camera crew at Woodstock, especially the one that decided to shoot Cocker with that bright-but-overcast sky behind him. It gave him an even greater manic, gloriously possessed appearance, like he was standing on the bow of a ship on its way to harpoon Moby-Dick himself.

My wife and I seen Joe live in 2008. He opened for Steve Miller. And as much as I love Steve Miller. Joe stole that show. And even at his age in 08, what you seen in this video of him live in 69 is how he was in 08 almost 40 years later. It was EPIC.

When you said "Take it to Church!" I had to laugh. I grew up in a small town church where all the people kind of mumbled their way through a hymn. If only Joe Cocker could have taken the singing for one Sunday! Most of the ladies would would have passed out, the minister would have thought he was the devil, the little children would have been terrified, but we teenagers would have the time of our lives!!!!!!

Check out Richie Havens at Woodstock, he was asked to go on early, as the other groups had not arrived yet (couldn't get through the traffic) so he went on and but ran out of material after a while. So he ad libbed and made up the song 'Freedom'...… was an instant hit!

This has always been my favorite version of this song, Joe feels every single note from every instrument deep down in his soul and channels it out in that incredible voice. Check out Ritchie Havens from Woodstock, I think you'll recognize Freedom as the hook from Tech N9ne's Speedom, and it is the most powerful version of any song I have ever heard performed.

Jamel---remember, IT IS WOODSTOCK !!!!! At that life-changing event (at least for me and most of my generation), we were given the best that every performer had to give. I own the concert on vinyl, CD, DVD, and digital "online." I listen to it about every 10 days, the whole damn event. The whole thing moves me, even today and it always will.

After this awesome emotional performance the skies opened up in a torrential rain that stopped the music for over an hour, only Joe could do that!

As the story goes, Paul McCartney was so imppressed with Joe's rendition of "With Alittle Help From My Friends" that back stage at one of Joe's concerts he gave him "She Came In Through The Bathroom Window." The Goerge Harrison snuck-up as Paul walked away, and gave him "Something." The other Beatles knew nothing of it until Joe released it. Next thing you know "Something" is on the Beatles album Abby Road. Actually, if your not familiar with the Beatles versions I suggest them too. Great video!

I was lucky enough to see Joe at Woodstock 94’. He was awesome.

I saw Joe Cocker at Waterloo Village, NJ in 1990 when I was 19 years old. I cut through the woods and hopped a fence and sat right next to his bus. We grabbed a couple of chairs from the buffet area and sat there with bored looks on our faces whenever somebody important walked by.
