Almost 8 years ago, I replaced the agitator dogs on this washing machine. Other than that, it has had absolutely no problems.
The other day I noticed the agitator dogs had gone out again, which is OK as they are a consumable part (that is, it is known that they will wear out). 8 years ago, I had the foresight to see my having to do this in the future, and when I bought the new set then, I actually bought 2 sets, one for the future. That time is now, so I already had the part on hand!
If you have been so lucky to have kept your direct-drive washer, you are one of the smartest consumers out there. They don't make machines that wash as well as these anymore, and they never will again. These 2 machines will be the absolute last washing machines I will ever own. If anything breaks on them, I will fix them, at any cost. They're that valuable.
In this video, I'll show how to fix this, step-by-step, with a few helpful tips and tricks along the way.
Good as new!
The model number of this machine is LSN7233BQ0. The part number for the replacement agitator dogs is 80040. ALWAYS look up your model number to verify the correct part number before ordering parts.

That wasn't actually the intent of this video, but I am glad it helped. The real lesson here is to get an old machine like I have (obviously used), and then fix it for cheap. This repair cost $6. Yes, 6. Not 60 or 600. 6. Parts for these old machines are inexpensive and plentiful, and also easy to replace, though they rarely break.

Had a repair man come out and said I needed a new transmission assembly. I know a little about mechanical, and the way he was trying to explain what was happening…. I called “BS” and sent him on his way… did a little research and found your video, Thank God! Ordered new dogs and had it working again in 20 minutes for $5.50. You saved me $200 + dollars…. Thank you for putting this out.

You're very welcome Kevin! I have several other repair videos on these types of machines, in the unlikely event something else breaks. These are extremely reliable and well-performing machines. As such, they don't make them like this anymore. Keep it as long as possible, and repair it at any expense, it will be worth it.

Bought an 80 series new in 1995. Only thing I ever had to do was change the dogs 1 time. Then in 2022 wife decided we need brand new GE washer and dryer... Worst possible mistake if ever did was to agree with her. 6 months later the washer was running after me like a wild boar everytime it went into spin cycle. 3 days ago I found a very nice Kenmore elite set identical to the pair we had. I bought them in a heartbeat. Folks, long story short, never get rid of your older direct drive washer. Parts are plentiful and inexpensive. This set will outlive me. Btw Keith I really like the shirt!

100%, I never fell for the hype when those HE pieces of junk came out, and I'm certainly not falling for it now. My older machine is a 1996, I've done the agitator dogs twice on it. Newer one was the last of the dfirect drive machines, 2010. I will never give these machines up, I will fix them if they break, and should I ever move, I don't care what it costs to move them, they are coming with me.

I'm happy you have the initiative to do it. Most ladies I have ever met would call the repairman. That was in the old days; nowadays, they won't even touch a machine this old, so the video is actually invaluable. You might take a handful of something to eat, perhaps nuts, jellybeans, or what have you. Repairmen these days take pocketbooksful, of money!

You're very welcome. I can relate, my father in law was the same way. He passed on at an early age. Mother-in-law now runs around like and teenager who got hold of her father's credit card. He was the "glue" that kept everything together. I never stop to think about that, even though it's been almost 20 years. So I had to start learning how to do things for myself. This is just one of many. I have several more repair videos on these type machines, done everything from motors to transmissions. They rarely fail, but even the best occasionally break down. So now I'm the go-to guy. At least you got someone in the business, no company services these anymore. Never get rid of your machine, fix it at any cost. It will always be worth it.

Pretty amazing. This is 30 years old, and that's all it's done. Along with the other now 15 years with absolutely no issues. It's always good to have those parts stocked up, too

@jaykay18 it seems to be a mix. Other videos I remember you saying it was from 2007. Funny enough I was trying to figure out what year my grandads old hotpoint was brought. Only when he passed and found the receipt. Did I find out. April 2002. He was a horder kept everything.

@@declanmarsh7398 My father probably sitll has old receipts like that, receipts before they were computer generated and instead were handwritten. Back then they didn't HAVE a computer to look up your purchase, if you didn't have/lost the receipt, that was on you!

Yours was the 5th video I watched and the only one that mentioned that it may be difficult to separate the top from the bottom part of the agitator. You said to try a rubber mallet, so my husband pulled while I used the mallet and it finally came apart! I can’t thank you enough! You are the reason that I didn’t give up!!!

Thanks for a very helpful video and practical tips like using the paper towel to keep the bolt in place. Little things like that are a big help. Of course, when I carefully popped off the top part of the agitator, all the parts flew out and jumbled. Thank goodness I had a video to look at and see how to put the puzzle back together.

So when my agitator turns counterclockwise, the tube turns with it. My clothes just go round and round when it moves. Most of the time it doesn’t!

My Wife felt your video was very good. Thank you !!! Mine has gone 23 years. The safety switch for the spin cycle has gone twice but the dogs have just now gone. Clear and easy to follow.

This is also better than replacing the entire agitator. Thanks for the video. The washers made today will not last as long as these direct drives would. For Maytag especially, the last good Maytag washers were the direct drive models.

Sure, no problem. These are "wear parts", otherwise known as "consumable items", that is, it is known that they wear out in time.

Thanks for the great video. I just bought my new “old” washer. You are so right, if you have one of the good ones, hang on. After 22 years, I decided to go with the “new school” washers. Oh my gracious! What a joke they are. Within 5 years I have gone through 2 (TWO) high dollar machines that I wouldn’t give $50 for now! I told my husband I wasn’t buying another piece of junk any more! I found a local man who refurbishes old machines (and new) and sells them. (Very smart man!) I just purchased a whirlpool ultimate care ii from him. Now granted the agitator is wobbly (the reason I’m here) I’m gonna go ahead and look at the dogs while I have it apart! I only paid $150 for the machine, and if I have to buy parts, that’s ok. I know it will last forever!

Great job Martha! Parts are readily available and rather inexpensive. As for your wobbly agitator, the agitator is in two pieces, the top "corkscrew" part, and the bottom part. The bottom part should not wobble at all, there are splines on the shaft and the agitator fits down on them. There is then a bolt to hold it down. If it is wobbling there, perhaps that bolt was loose, but that's pretty rare. It's usually the top part that's the issue. Take it apart and inspect the dogs, worn ones can cause it to be a bit out of whack indeed. Worst case, a pack of them are about 5 bucks, wouldn't hurt to replace them, or simply to have on hand for the day you do need them, if the ones in the machine look new. If the machine otherwise works, you can probably leave well enough alone. If something does break, you can still get an agitator, or one similar that will fit.

How did you get the spacer nut unscrewed? I'm trying to deep clean an hour series 80 Kenmore, but that damn nut is driving me crazy. I can't clean it properly without removing it

Great video...others I had seen showed a retention ring that holds the dogs in place. Like this video, mine did not have a retention ring. Before I viewed this video I used a rubber band to hold the dogs in place and then used a needle nose pliers to remove the rubber band. Tested the machine in a wash cycle and it ran like new. The method described in this video looks great as well. Thank you!

Another very easy repair that will keep this machine going for a long time. This happened to the direct drive I used to have. It was also suffering from a bad timer and a failed neutral drain assembly in the transmission. Now I wish I repaired it. The 2014 Speed Queen that replaced it is still going strong and does the job well, but I feel the direct drive was overall the better machine. It's truly a shame that no machine will ever be manufactured like this again. The direct drives and the old belt drives were in my opinion the best machines ever built.

Thanks. Yes, I really like the direct drive and I feel with the dual-action agitator, it does a bit better job than the SQ. Not knocking the SQ, that's an excellent well-built machine that will last forever, but there's just something about this I like a bit better. Also happen to like the neutral drain as I feel it's less strain on the entire machine as a whole.

The dog ears on my washer went out, and being on a fixed income, I couldn't afford the $125 "house call" charge from the local repair shop, PLUS jacked up prices for the simple parts. Once I found out the real problem, I ordered them(shipped for about $5 total cost), and followed YOUR instructions over about a dozen others I watched, because you made it simple for us that have never done this before, and I'd have never thought about adding a piece of paper towel to keep the bolt on. Thanks for the instructions, and not acting like everybody has done this a hundred times before without really having to think much about how to do it. When I took mine apart, I found about 30 small yellow plastic beads in the area where you loosen the nut. Where did they come from, and where do I put them? Diagrams from the factory didn't list them, the local repair shop said they'd never heard of it, so I'm leaving them out. So far, so good. Keep on doing what you do....helping folks. It was some awesome advice, and again, nice and simple instructions without confusion at any point. My hat's off to you Sir! I can now add that money I would've paid the repair shop, and add it to what's probably my last trip to the coast to fish for a few days. If the fish are biting, I'll send ya some! Thanks Chuck! I've been told a million times that I'm a great teacher. I break it down into simple steps that anyone can understand and do. If there's a complex thing going on, I'll draw a parallel to real life so it's easily understood. The paper towel trick is a new life skill that can make ANY job with bolts easier. As far as those yellow beads, if the agitator dogs shattered, that could be. If they were all exactly the same size, perhaps somebody poured some of those "scent boosters' they sell now in? They're definitely not a factory part, that's for sure--just what you saw in the video. I do love me a nice fish dinner! Glad you were able to fix your machine, it's people like you, who leave nice comments like this, that give me the motivation to continue. I post a new video every day.

@@techtonik25 Still, the machine could be fixed for under 20 bucks. Not sure how long 3D printed ones would last. Great technology, but it's got a long way to go still. And, these days, $50 is the new $20 with the way prices are, at least here in the US.

Thanks very much! For the ice maker, I don't have a fridge like that. Usually there's some kind of arm that lifts up when there's enough ice. If you lift the arm a little further, there should be a "lock" position that will prevent it from turning on. Other options might be to disconnect the electrical connector to it (might require removing it from the freezer to get to it), or shutting the water supply to it off (follow the hose back to where it starts and there should be a valve.

great step by step, thanks. My buddy who fixes washing machines has BEGGED me to never get rid of this machine. We have replaced just about every part imaginable. The new machines don't clean clothes (they are designed to save water and electricity, not clean) and they break in a couple years. I will keep repairing this 23 year old Whirlpool until I'm too old to do it!

Great video and I agree with the quality of the older machines. This easy fix saved me a bunch of money! I ordered new dogs from amazon and they'll arrive next week. However, we needed to get a load of laundry done this weekend so I did quick work around. If you take an Olfa blade and cut V shaped notches into the warn out dogs then amazingly it's working again. I just cut 2 or 3 notches on the side where the teeth used to be on. The plastic is pretty soft and it didn't have to be a perfect cut... just as long as there something for the teeth to catch onto. Neat life hack until the new dogs arrive.

Great video, and let me tell you that my Whirpool washing machine is 27 years old and it would be the first time that I replace the dogs We used to have a maintenance policy with Sears , but when they detected that the washing was 15 years old they said that we couldn't buy anymore the maintenance policy Well besides the replacement of the dogs the equipment is working perfect. A big thank you for this very useful video. I'm on my second set of dogs for my Inglis washer (I had replaced them about 10 years ago and forgot how to do it easily). Aside from that no problem whatsoever with it. Bought it new in 2002 and I'm keeping it as long as I can. I don't trust recent ones.

@@belindawing2984 They're pretty much standard for Whirlpool, Inglis, and a few other brands of washing machines from that era with an agitator that only turns one way. I bought mine on Amazon.

@@belindawing2984 You need the model number of your machine. With that you can look up the part number for the agitator dogs on any appliance part website. There are not many stores you can buy these parts in today, just like all the other stores that have closed; this will likely be an online order and you will have it in a few days.

Also after 18 years i replaced the basket in our Kenmore 80 series washer from 2001. porcelain was coming off and the basket was rusting and getting rough. Not good for clothes especially for delicate items i did that about a year ago. VERY easy to do.

Eight years seems to be the magic number. I replaced my dogs at about the 8 year mark, now it's 16 and needs them again. Luckily I ordered 2 sets the first time!

Depends all on usage. I know some people that run 2 loads a day, every day. They've got to wear out sooner on those. But good for you, having them on hand. I bought a pack of 48 of them recently, for something like 8 or 9 bucks, I'll have them for a good long time. Even if the nylon disintegrates, it's still cheaper buying a large pack than a very small pack. And yes, the rest of the machine will likely be around to accept them. They are that well made.

When I did the repair I just pulled the dog ear assembly out with long pliers, I didn't have to pull the whole agitator... Made the job much faster on reassembly.

Yes, it's a great idea to keep these going. Any money spent on parts, is a wise investment. I keep agitator dogs in stock at all times, as I have at least three relatives with DD machines in service. PN 80040 sounds right for the ones I have in my mini parts warehouse, AKA the hoard.

You're very welcome! NEVER consider the thought of giving up on your machine, you cannot ever get one that will work as well. Fix it at ANY cost, it will STILL be cheaper than a new one, and work leaps and bounds better than a new one.

thanks for the video brother, my dog legs went after 26 yrs,, the other part that wore out ( 5yrs ago) was the clutch bushing.. repaired both myself,, at total cost of.... $ 15.87 ( parts cost ) .so far ,, to keep this tough machine running, ,its a Kitchen Aid,, top load , heavy duty, extra large capacity , 2-speed,, got it brand new in 1994 Dec...these old machines are better than what's out there new , to anyone who has an old machine like mine, and you like it, until it breaks down , don't just toss it, , first check what's wrong with it, may cost you little to fix,, instead of spending thousands on a top of the line new one only to have it break down in 2 yrs.. and no one will cover the warrantee ….

Absolutely! These machines are absolute workhorses, never again will you find machines this good. Parts are cheap and readily available, and the machines are relatively easy to service. What more could you possibly ask for? Hold on to your machine as long as possible. Fix it at ANY cost, even if you need an expensive part. It's worth it.

This video could not have been done better. I’ve done this before and yes, it’s easy if you know all the little tricks - which you covered completely! And you are 100% correct when you spoke about the durability and effectiveness of these machines. They work. They work well and if you maintain them they will last forever! Mine is a Whirlpool from 1998. I LOVE it. And she works like I bought her yesterday. This video was spot on perfect! Thank you for posting. I enjoyed watching it and was reminded of a couple things I forgot! Do you have a video of how to replace the neutral drain mechanism in the transmission? I’ve done that before but it’s been a long time and I noticed today she’s not draining in neutral anymore. Thank you. Washing machines fascinate me for some odd reason.

Good repair video! Very true that you can't get a TL that works nearly this well today. If you want to use a traditional TL this is the way to go. The ONLY new washer I recommend it the SQ FL. It is a true commercial washer that is built like a tank. I also will also call it the only washer that I will certify as HETFW (High Efficiency That Fucking Works)

You are 100% correct. Machines today are crap. Nothing beats a direct drive. I’m so fortunate I educated myself in these washers and have restored two. The first a 1994 Kenmore with a hot warm option and the second a TOL Kenmore Elite with the detergent dispensers.

Thanks! My two machines didn't come with a warm rinse option, so I modded them to include it. It's a bit of a manual process, you have to wait for the washer to fill for wash, then flip the switch. Unless you want warm/warm, in which case it will do it on its own.

@@jaykay18 Yeah I have viewed your other videos showing that off. I’m a huge fan. The 94 Kenmore I have does a true warm rinse where it’s the same temp as the wash temp. My 2002 Kenmore Elite regulates the rinse to 75F 😒

Wow, I just noticed this issue in my Whirlpool “clean touch” that is probably almost 30 years old and was thinking I needed a new machine or some thing but I can see the issue is that it doesn’t turn the bottom agitator either way I spin it, although when I hold, it does turn more. I was testing it because someone else claimed it wasn’t turning. I’m hoping I can just do what you said and get it to work again with new dogs. Thanks so much!

If the machine otherwise operates when you wash something, it's probably just the agitator dogs.

I was thinking maybe I should replace it since going on 30 years old but interesting to hear you think it's not too old to keep and is actually a prized machine. Two quick questions: Should I try tightening the nut first to see if that is the issue or if it turns both ways by hand without locking in one direction does that mean it has to be the dogs? Also, since mine looks exactly like yours (w/fabric softener opening) can I order the ones for a Whirlpool "Clean Touch" from the 1990s or must I search and remove the entire machine just to get the model number from the back/bottom?

@@SWLinPHX I had someone who had commented on this video who had said that they thought replacing their machine would be a good idea. They went and got a new machine, but didn't have them haul away their old one. Within one week, they commented again and told me, and further said that the new machine was so abysmal they returned it and are now fixing their old one and will continue to use it. This is the last good machine they made. As long as the case and frame don't rust out, it can likely give you service for the rest of your life with very minor repairs. Just treat it with respect, don't overload it, and it will be more than happy to continue serving. Chances are very good it uses the same part # agitator dogs, so you're probably safe ordering that. I bought a pack of 48 of them for about 8 bucks that I split with a friend of mine who also has 2 of these machines. Turns out that pack, split, was cheaper than buying a single pack. Even if the plastic perishes just sitting there and I have to throw the rest out, it was still cheaper that way, but that's your call. I vacuum sealed mine to prevent oxygen from possibly degrading them, if that would even happen, but that's completely unnecessary. There's no need to pull the machine out, just look around good under the lid, there's a plate or sticker somewhere that has all the information that you will need.

Yes. Spray it down really really good with something like PB Blaster. Leave it overnight. Spray it again. Leave it overnight. Do this 3 or 4 days, then try. Another thing that might work is using an impact wrench on it, sometimes those blows it produces can knock it free, especially with healthy doses of penetrating oil. I wouldn't cheap out on that with WD-40. It might work, but is 6 or 8 bucks for a can worth the bolt breaking? Get the good stuff. Plus, you'll have it, it won't go bad in the can.

If you are talking about the top of the agitator, there's no need to cover that. The inside plastic cap with the rubber seal, yes, that should be in place. Otherwise, water can splash in there and rust that bolt in to the point where it can never be removed. Better would be to buy an actual replacement.

43 year servicer here. I absolutely agree to hold on to that direct drive. ALL the new ones are junk. And gonna get worse, thanks to guberment. Also older Maytag Dependable Care washers are good. My rule is fix em till they fall apart.

100% all the way. Yes, those Dependable Cares were good too. When they fall apart, patch them back together and keep going. I've already spoken to my 2 machines and informed them that they simply MUST last the rest of my life. So far, this has been the only repair.

I have an whirlpool and an agitator just like this model wtw4800bq1. Would you know if I could remove agitator only to wash certain very delicate items that I don't want to risk snagging on agitator. Then put back when im done. Thank you

That machine can't wash anything anyway, it's a belt-drive model. It's agitation is poor at best. I highly suggest you study how a washer with an agitator works. Then you can tell me what it will do if you remove it.
