I grew up In Northern Wisconsin, we didn’t have hot water, only cold well water, we had a wood and coal furnace in the basement, it was so cold in winter I would lay on the floor and put my feet on the register, no carpets on the floor, laundry was done in a wringer washer, no dryer, we would run and get kerosene to heat water for laundry, food was all grown in our huge garden, summers were so hot, we had no air conditioning, but I would go back in a minute if I could. My two older sisters walked to school in all weather, it was a one room school house. I don’t think the kids today could handle the life style I grew up in, oh one more thing No Tv set, listened to a lot of radio programs.

I am a born and raised in Montana guy. This brought back memories of camping with my Dad in a hunting cabin… no power… in the middle of winter…. when I was a kid. Cabin is in Big Timber, MT and surrounded by wilderness. An oil lamp and a big old cast iron “Garland”, wood burning cook stove were the amenities. The sound of the snow squeaking…. and the sound of the wood being split…. brought it all back. I think that when it gets that cold outside… the air almost smells different…. Anybody else find that to be true? At -30 F and colder…. on a windless night…. the still quietness is truly amazing…. only if you have a toasty, roaring fire. 😊 Thanks for the video 👍✨

When I was fourteen, 50 years ago, I remember walking to school in -44 F. The impacted of that 6 block walk in a pristine frozen world ignited a lifelong passion for it. Thank you for this, it brings me back.

To cold for me I'm old and have health issues but I enjoy watching youngsters showing the gear they use and others who build shelters.

When the snow squeaks like that when you walk on it, you know you are starting to approach real cold.

My dad made a tent like that with 2x2’s back in the late 50’s and an old green canvas tent! We would camp out in New Hampshire in the winter. Thanks for the memories! I remember using newspaper under the sleeping bag on the cots for extra protection from the cold and it worked great!

I remember it being that cold when I lived in Alaska. I never camped in it, but I walked and hiked in it... and there was something magical about hearing the crackle of the cold and the "squeaky" footsteps on the snow.

You mentioned a couple times how much you loved being out in the extreme cold (with the right gear and also inside a warm tent). I get it. Grew up in Michigan, and winter was probably my favorite time of year. The snow, the cold, the more the better! Something primal about the challenge of man against the elements, the solitude of winter, when no one else is out, the beauty of the forest covered in snow, the squeak and crunch of the snow below zero. The smoke rising above the cabin, the warm glow of the fire. Nice.

I've experienced similar life threateningly cold conditions myself. One time I was in my warm bed in Ireland when at around 2 am I woke up to find half of the blanket not covering my legs. I was quick to rectify the situation but it was a close call nonetheless and happy to say I survived it.

I've personally been out in that low of temps once when visiting Chena Hot Springs Alaska in early February several years ago. We saw the Aurora. I've never been that cold since having that experience. It was a great memory. Glad you are sharing your memories with us. Looking forward to your next video.

Out of the can, tuna is my go to. If I have the option to heat up a canned meat...then corned beef hash with eggs. I absolutely love your set up. Thanks for sharing.

Dear Jay, this is definitely one of my top favorite videos of the channel. It is impressive how cozy and comfortable you make it look under such harsh conditions. And we are talking about actual Polar temperatures! My favorite canned meat is Irish corned beef! When i was young(66 now) i loved camping in brutal cold. Of course astronomy is what got me out to remote and dark places but the camping and skywatching was my thing. I have been watching these videos just this past few weeks and i sure got the urge to go and get away from things for a few days😁

That sound of snow, when walking around at those Temps is just so recognizable.

Shredded low salt Spam. Shred it with just a fork. Add diced boiled egg, 2 tsp. Pickle relish, 1/8th cup onion, squirter mustard mix in Miracle-whip to moisten, salt and pepper, wedge of Velvetta ( as much as you like. )Fill as many buns as you have spread for. Wrap in foil, freeze or refrigerate what you don't want to eat now. Warm bun on stove. Yummy!

I love those bitter cold nights and early mornings, it’s like sound freezes, breaks and falls to the ground before it reaches you. So quiet and peaceful!

I already can't go outside having 26 celcius. I live in the Philippines so we are use to tropical climate. I cannot imagine being there, I won't be able to move a muscle and probably die. I LOVE watching these videos in the FREEZING cold ❄️🥶 with the snow. It's SO BEAUTIFUL. I live in Louisiana. Every few years it'll get down to 10° or so.. But we are NOT set up for long term Temps like this. I think I would love to live off the GRID like that where there's cold winters and mild summers. Because, let me tell ya, it gets really hot here in the south during summer.

Don’t think ppl realise how cold that is. Always amazes me that German soldiers were fighting in Russia in minus 40 and only had summer uniforms. It must of been hell.

Have you thought to try a wood stove fan to circulate the warm air? Would love to see you try one and review the results.

-30 is the coldest I've ever been in, while working the flightline almost 20 years ago on a trip to Eielson AFB, AK. It was a fun trip, but it was definitely chilly. Made me appreciate having a warm room to go to with a hot shower after my shifts.

Usually tuna or salmon for canned. I throw in celery, red, yellow or green bell peppers diced up with fresh cracked black pepper and some red pepper flakes if I feel adventurous. I love the internal framing. I once owned military surplus modular tenting, which we floored when we lived in it for six months from spring to end of September. The walls would have been a great addition. Lighter canvas is also better, although the windows did provide some light but not enough for through the winter.

“This is what cold sounds like.” I’m sitting in a 70 degree living room with a blanket on me and I got chills when you began walking through the snow. I associate that sound with painful cold!

I was in Korea in January/February of 1973. Serving In the Marines. We were on a cold winter exercise. Our camp was on top of the highest point possible. Our radios work line of sight so had to above all the other units. Our second night there it got cold very cold -40 with 40 mph wind making fell like -81. We were in insulated 12 man tents we had two kerosine heaters. We stayed warm enough. Then 3 days it got up to 70 + degrees. We were on that mountain for 45 days eating C rations.

As someone from the north of New Zealand where winter doesn't really exist, i would LOVE to experience something like this. Summer is nice and all, but i want to experience REAL cold.

When I was working as a diamond driller up in Northern Ontario I lived in a tent similar to yours with 3 other guys. I worked 2 winters in freezing temperatures from November through to late March. From mid December through until the end of February the average day time temperature was around -25 degrees Celsius and night time temperatures were _40 to -45 degrees Celsius. We had lots of canned goods to go along with packages of frozen meats. Each of us took turns making meals and at the drill site we had a 45 gallon drum as our wood stove but had a stove similar to yours in the tent. At the drill site my average meal consisted of canned soup and canned meat with a couple of slices of bread. My favorite canned meat was spam and a can of beans and canned potatoes. I would fry up the potatoes add the beans and the can of spam. It was my favorite meal while at work. To change things up sometimes I would have salmon it came in cans like our soup cans so it made for a nice meal with canned potatoes that again I would fry up on that 45 gallon drum wood stove. I am retired now and I still enjoy my can of spam mixed with beans, canned potatoes but now I also add two eggs that I will make for breakfast now. It's actually quite good. After all spam is made of a piece of pork shoulder put raw into the can and is boiled in hot water until cooked and the result is what you get when open the can

Thank you for this. It’s one of my favorite times. I was supposedlg drunk and stupid. But had a key to my buddies shanty way out a lake. The temps were wicked in even Northern New York. Thankfully we had a bunch of good old oak and pine to get it going. But it was so awesome bejng our in the middle of a lake all alone. It only went down to 25 below zero. But. I’ll tell. What a thrill it was. Thanks man!

Spent 2 seasons running the ice roads with Tli Cho and even living in Saskatchewan for most of my life, that cold up there was something else. You’re a braver man than I for voluntarily going out and camping out there.

I love that. Camping in freezing conditions in the middle of nowhere and away from the troubles of the world…and you can still bust out a Toronto Raptors game. The wonders of technology. Absolutely brilliant.

I camp like that but in a 4 season tent with no heat source.I am an Alaskan. (Not an Alas- scam, like a person from the lesser 48 who thinks living here is "off the grid" . If you got a tv crew you had a big grid. ) My body kicks out lots of heat. -30 F is no problem except for putting up the tent due to removing an outer mitt. I have had severe frostbite from mountain climbing during the Winter 8 years ago. It takes careful planning on the moisture management vs warmth thing. Great video. Your tent looks fantastic. I'd fireproof it and enjoy the coziness. When your wet clothes freeze its fun to let them freeze in shapes and take pictures. (pants with no one in them, walking or sitting). Have fun!

I live in England so rarely have to endure extreme cold so it's nice to see how you manage in such low temperatures. I'm what I would call a lazy cook - I often throw meat and veggies into the oven to cook like your dinner here, so easy and delicious - one thing I always do is add a peeled onion cut into quarters though. I love roasted onions, and for me they add so much flavour to everything I roast, so if you love your onions it's worth adding one or two to your dinner. I try to make extra veggies and especially onions, then fry them up in the morning and just add a couple of scrambled eggs and it ends up being a delicious breakfast and super easy. Just an idea, which you may already do I know, but just in case you don't lol xx

When you were talking about the ground being freezing temps while the upper air was 80s and 90s, I started thinking it would be cool to have a thermal imaging camera, to capture that extreme difference! I'd love to see something like that! Maybe a shot from outside the tent as well, when it's really cold, and the tent is hot!

I grew up in northern Canada where Halloween was -38 C. In my 20’s I bought a team of 5 sled dogs and did years of winter camping with my team. Coldest was -48 C, without the wind. I still love the cold at 69. Thx for great video.

I'm not sure if it's because I live in the south US where we don't get any snow, but I find these camping videos in extreme cold so comforting to watch and I'll put them on during the workday almost like a yule log. Thanks for sharing your journey because people like me who don't witness this weather are fascinated at what it takes to survive in the extreme cold.

My dad used to make us kids go look at the thermometer when it was -40. He actually gave us a ride to school when it got that cold. I grew up in Northern Wisconsin.

I live in the Uk and we don't have anything like the conditions you were camping out in. I think the record for Kent where I live is -21 in the 1940's. I have experienced -14 which wasn't to bad until adding on the wind-chill which were we live - on a bit of land that juts out 6 miles into the sea - is incredibly uncomfortable and I know people that have been caught out in it and actually died of hypothermia. So I can't imagine what it is like to even stand in a temperature that cold. Thank you for sharing your camp out with us - it's something most of us can never experience any other way and it is very much appreciated.

The nature and exercise is great. The way you heat up your tents is really good. The healthy meals you can cook in that situation is wonderful. The wifi for that Raprtors game sounded so good. So much fun.

I live in northern Maine and love watching your videos, it's just like living here, snowy and very cold. When I do an overnight burn I like to use full round pieces for that nice long slow burn and gives off good heat. Keep up the great videos and look forward to the next.

It's always colder in our cabin than it is outside when we first get there. We're in the UP of Michigan and we swim through 3 plus feet of snow to get to it from the road. But once in and unpacked, it's heaven.

So, I live in South Carolina presently. Originally from Connecticut. When you started the video and were walking that particular sound the snow makes in absolute frigidness is very unique and I even thought it. I remember -40 F and windchill was -85. It was a record do not recall the year. But then you commented later in the video about the sound of COLD, it was cool that you made that point. I miss the cold weather it's been infernally hot here this year. Thanks for the video it went by so fast, you are definitely prepared!!

Corned beef everytime - and mix it up in a pan with some potato, carrot and onion. Super comfort food. But also goes great sliced thin in a sandwich with mustard. Yum.

Before freeze up and before we could get into hunting & ice fishing (no electric) we almost had to depend on canned meat if we wanted meat. We had gone to Anchorage & stocked up on canned goods & those got shipped to us. The canned meat I remember the most was canned whole chickens! Horrible!

One of my saysing's is "I hate bad weather.. but I love terrible weather". Extremes bring out a different set of parameters for comfort, for tolerance, for survival. The closer one gets to the survival end the more deep the reward becomes. Extreme anything challenges you, preparation, abilities, making making the right decisions. I can see your attraction to this type of adventure. Side note: I bet your selling a ton of Yamaha snowmobiles. (I'm not saying your sponsored) When that engine comes to life what a feeling of security. Oh, canned meat? Solid white Albacore.

First time watcher and I enjoyed this very much! I live in Northern Ontario and am very accustomed to this snap, crackle, pop type deep freeze that oddly makes everything extra beautiful and accurately described as 'breath taking' which is what this type of cold weather does to you. What ever you do, do not eat a peppermint, cough drop, hot gum or smoke because you will be in a world of hurt from coughing your guts out lol. It's also such 'breath taker' to see the Northern Lights here as well and the colder the temperature, the clearer they are. So blessed to live up here 💚

The new wood stove is a locomotive.... , especially from the air, and I loved the smokey joe Coleman stove, that's what we called ours, love how super cold it is, especially how your new gear is working, impressive. Tip: if you take a sprig of rosemary with you it will add great flavor to the dish, (cook it with everything in the pan like in the video), take care, great video, be well.

The type of can meat I personally eat the must, tuna, sardines, and chicken. You can’t go wrong with any of it. Mayo, crackers, can veggies etc and breads. Love it.
