In 1972 I was called out to a Chevy dealer's body shop to give them a frame repair estimate on an Olds, and there sitting right next to it was a totaled '63 Split Window. It was bad! When I got into the body shop office with my bid I saw a young man in a near full body cast, with another man next to him that was his insurance adjuster. The shop manager was on the phone with a wrecking yard, and when I heard him say "$200.00 is all you'll give for a wrecked Stingray?", I had to ask right away... "if that's all you get for salvage on that can I buy it?" Well, after a short discussion with the owner and adjuster, it was mine, for $200.00!!!!! I made sure I got all the pieces that were in the pile next to it. They told me what happened. The owner had stopped at a red light behind a bobtail truck, then a Peterbuilt coming up behind him lost its brakes and rear ended him, shoving him into the bobtail. You can imagine what it looked like after that. I got it home on 2 flatbeds, and for a month compiled a list of what I'd need to put it all back together. The hardest part to find was the full rear 'clip' from the windshield back, which I finally got when I went to another salvage yard searching for frame parts for a frame repair in my shop, and happened to mention what I was looking for. Having been one of his beat customers for several years, he shocked me when he said ... "boy, have I got a surprise for you!" Then took me to the back of his yard, and behold, there sat a full rear clip for a '63 split window, all intact including all windows, trim, doors, fuel tank, and complete interior. Then, he gave me the best surprise, I could have it all for $250.00! Needless to say, I jumped on that without any hesitation! A year and a half later, it was all restored, and I took it in to a master painter I knew, and had him paint it a dark pearl blue. The last thing remaining to be road ready was a new radiator. I found that when I took it into a muffler shop for exhaust repair. He had one upstairs that a customer had bought but never picked up. $30.00 later, and it was mine. I drove that 'vette' for the next 6 years until my divorce. It turned heads everywhere I went! I'd still have it but my divorce attorney sold me out and I was ordered by the judge to sell all of my cars except for one. Looking back, I wish I had kept the 'vette' instead of the '73 Lincoln MK4 prototype.

FYI from Corvette expert: The emergency brake didn't go to the middle of the seats until 1967. The two speed power glide was only std on a corvette after 1953-1954 and this was before manuals were available as an option. Once manuals were available they were std with a 3sp Manuel until 1970 when the 4sp was finally std! 1963 Corvettes Sebring Silver paint had real silver in the paint and was a $92+- dollar option. Route 66 used a 1961, 1962 and 1963 corvettes and never a 1960. The corvette was supposed to have been sentimental to Todd's and the last possession from his dad who died just before he left the east coast for his searching for what town him and Buzz want to settle down in. This is why its a little confusing when he shows up with a 1962 the third season or so. Finally found a category of car I know more about than Jay! Best looking Corvette ever. Perfect! Chevy should have kept the design like Porsche did with the 911.

I bought a ‘63 Coupe in 1975 from a guy in Hanford, CA when I was in the Navy. It wasn’t a fuelie, but it was fast! One of my biggest regrets is selling it. Beautiful car Jay!

My grandfather owned a ‘63 C2 convertible when I was a little kid in the late 80s/90s and it’s what made me a car guy from the age of 4. He’d take me to car shows in it, to Lime Rock race track where he raced it, it was just amazing. Such a special car, it showed me cars could be for fun and joy and forever will be my mental benchmark of sports cars. He sold it in the late 90s because he needed the money, and the split window really is the desirable car today like the Gullwing Mercedes, but we had no idea back then. They were just old cars then

I had one just like that when I was 20. I think it was the first one in Western Maryland. Driving that car made me an instant celebrity in our town.

My brother owned a '63 convertible. Sold it to a friend who managed to wrap it around a tree. Of all the cars in Jay's Garage this is car is my favorite. Yeah, Jay has some cars worth $$$ but a fuel injected '63 split window is truly special

I met Jay several times at the Rock Store in Malibu Canyon. Great guy - totally down to earth gearhead. My grandfather had this exact same car. I remember him coming to pick me up on my sixth birthday in his split window. I could not have been more enthralled! I have just finished a 32 year restoration with my twin brother of a "64 Vette convertible with the original (rebuilt) 365hp solid lifter/high lift cam motor. It is a near-show quality driver that we will spend driving on the weekends in Santa Cruz and on Highway 1.

Yup! It's the split window that makes it.

Mike McCloskey says that the C2 suspension is "What we call a 'swing axle'," but although the rear axles do swing, the term "swing axle" is customarily used to refer to only an IRS system in which the rear axles have only an inboard CV joint and no CV joint at the wheel hub. This swing axle system caused the wheel to change camber during its jounce/rebound movement and that camber change can result in a dramatic rear wheel steering effect that can be dangerous for the driver unaccustomed to such a system; that's the kind of system that was on the original Corvairs and resulted in the book "Unsafe at Any Speed." The C2 IRS has CV joints at both ends of the axles so that the wheels maintain a more vertical angle to the road surface, which eliminates rear wheel steering and keeps more of the tire's contact patch on the road for greater adhesion. My wife and I honeymooned in my '64 Stingray, driving up old highway 395 through beautiful country to Tahoe. In fact, it was because of my Vette that I met my wife: She lived across the apartment complex courtyard from me and told her roommate -- who later became Maid of Honor at our wedding --- that she just had to meet "that guy who drives the white Corvette." The excuse they found to meet me was to come to my door on Halloween, trick-or-treating. It was all my treat and love at first sight. I owe 33 years of happy marriage, great kids, and super grandkids to that Vette. Wish I had it now...wish even more that my late wife were alive and with me.

John Rossmann .they swing up and down as the susp.rides on the road...the axle shafts.

@@randyjones7818 I raced cars for years including a couple of IRS Vettes, a '64 and a '68. In technical suspension engineering and racing circles the type of IRS in the '63 and onward Vettes is known as a "fully articulated" suspension because it has CV joints both at the differential and the wheel hubs. Only an IRS that lacks a CV joint at the wheel hubs is referred to as a "swing axle" IRS. Swing axle IRS can be dangerous for drivers who don't understand its characteristics which include camber steering as the rear wheels swing through their jounce-rebound arc, and that causes a sudden transition from understeer to oversteer, which in turn can cause the car to roll over. Many American drivers who bought the early swing axle Porsches turned them onto their roofs because Americans were accustomed to understeering solid rear axle American cars and didn't know what to do when their Porsche transitioned from understeer to oversteer in the middle of a curve as the camber steering set in. That's why the 356 Porsche got the nickname "bathtub Porsche" because so many of them ended up on their roof and looked like bathtubs. Porsche abandoned swing axle IRS to fully articulated IRS mainly because of the problem that American drivers had with the swing axles. Chevy made the mistake of putting swing axles on the early Corvairs (because a swing axle is cheaper than a fully-articulated IRS) and so many of them turned over that Ralph Nader wrote a book about them titled "Unsafe at any Speed" which eventually led to the end of the Corvair, even though Chevy remedied the problem in '65 with a redesign to fully articulated IRS.

John Rossmann The rear suspension on C2’s and C3’s is more correctly referred to as trailing arm. They also didn’t use CV joints but U-joints inboard and outboard of the halfshafts. Much better than a true swing axle independent rear but the rear wheels would still go into a slightly toe out condition when the rear suspension was unloaded. Racers would set in more static toe in or change the location of the center mount of the transverse leaf spring to combat the situation. This is one reason why the C2-C3 was not considered a world class handling car. The 1984 Corvette with it’s five link rear suspension would be a big improvement on its handling.
