Haberstock Mobility produces some of the world's finest internal crank planetary drives. They are called Schlumpf Drives. I have been cycling with the Schlumpf Speed Drive, and in this video, I upgrade to the Schlumpf Mountain Drive.
Let me discuss the differences, install the new drive, and try to explain some of the reasoning why I am making the change.

I hope you did not have the experience I had 20 years ago when I bought my Schlumpf Mountain Drive from Florian Schlumpf himself. I had met him in Switzerland two years previous, and when I began my preparations for a solo ride across the USA in 2000 on a streamlined Lightning Cycle Dynamics recumbent bike, I wanted to simplify and straighten my chain-line as much as possible. I went from a road triple to the Schlumpf with cruising speed in mind. Like you I wanted 1-1 for the largest portion of my riding on flat ground, but was glad to have the 2.5-1 for climbing. I then only needed a 7 speed Suntour at the rear. Better still my typical 20mph (32kph) cruising speed was a comfortable cadence in the very middle of the cluster with starting out two gears down. I spent very little of that trip in the 2.5-1 gearing, but it made that loaded touring machine capable on all but the steepest of climbs. So what did I do that you might have also with your trike? One day during my training runs prior to my journey's beginning, I started out in the high ratio with a 60 tooth, thinking it was set to 1-1. It pretzeled that chainring, and the web of the Mountain Drive. I emailed Florian, and he was kind enough to Fedex a new web to me allowing me to begin only one day after my May 1 planned departure date. For replacing the folded 60 tooth I had to resort to a 58 tooth I had available that worked out fine..

Hi Matt. The MD can apply a lot of torque to the rear drive mechanism. But, as others have mentioned, I find with my combination of a MD and Nuvinci N380 that, even with the trike fully loaded, I will spin out on loose gravel in the ganny-gear combination going up a steep climb. I love the wide gear range that this combination provides. And, as you point out, the Sclumpf is most efficient when the planetary gears are not engaged (ie. in high range on the MD). There is also one other benefit - if the MD breaks, you'll be stuck in 1:1 rather than with the SD where you'd be stuck in effectively low gear. Happy Wheels!

Wow, you have the guts to ride a recumbent in HCMC downtown!! I feel intimidated just to cross the streets. Thanks for the video.

I see in the faces of the Vietnamese people, a genuine fascination with your trike, an intense curiosity to understand everything, and an abiding hunger to belong to a much bigger world beyond what they already know. Like the people in Poland watching Kojak in the 70's, they have a yearning and a burning to have more as well as options to experience more. Your presence triggers and fires up an underlying spark.

@Stephen Morton They are fascinated by a trike that flies in the face of what they are accustomed to seeing. People are over here in the U.S. as well, but there is a more unique context of extreme contrast there and a more intense curiosity. You can see it in their faces, but it is an underlying hunger that surpasses mere curiosity.

Good choice Matt. Should be the right choice to give you the range to climb and maintain on the flats. You were brave to take on that kind of traffic.

Can't wait for you to hit the road, and find some mountains to test this bad boy on. Hell, can't wait for you to hit the road again :) Maybe you can do like Ed Pratt!! No, I don't think I'll be doing that either ;) If I do get to build Grasshopper II, I'm looking at a belt drive instead of chain. But you have to determine that LONG before where you are.

In about 3 weeks I will be getting a lightly used Mountain Drive with 34 and 46 tooth chain rings which I will be adding another 60 or so tooth ring to it if it works out. My Gekko will be climbing. JaYoe

Looks like a nice upgrade to me. One quesiton. Do you clip in to your pedals so your feet don't fall off when you get tired?

Btw, even if Schlumpf ('Schloompf') is the Surename of the Creator, you could still translate 'Schlumpf" to 'Smurf' - because thats how "The Smurfs" are called in German: "Die Schlümpfe" ("Der Schlumpf")

Although rolloff will not recommend a 24T chainring due to the potential for excess torque, If you consider that speed hubs can be used in tandems, albeit with bigger chainrings, surely a single rider isn't going to manage to produce more torque than 2 riders, even with a smaller chainring? Also, in tandem usage there will be many more instances of gear changes occurring under power due to the riders not both letting off for shifting? SO on that basis, with one careful rider, i reckon it will be fine! Wise choice IMO, as you will spend very little time with the drive engaged, reducing overall power losses, saving it only for times when you need to winch yourself up a tough climb. Id be more worried about the integrity of the cone washers in the long run, than the speed hub, as there will be a lot of torque on that area - they make a torque arm that spreads the load onto the frame, if that is an issue. You know what you're doing and when to be careful. Enjoy!

Matt is getting smarter as for the Rohloff thats just theory as cadence remains the same what matters is load I have a cargo version of the mountain drive paired with a SRAM Eagle 12 speed 50 10 no grade is too steep to be done with ease What was that about paring with a motor? Anyone have any information on that?

The guys at Greenspeed trikes have been using this combination od Schlumpf Mountain Drive and Rohloff hub for years without any issues at all. Here's what they say in their website: "Thus some people have managed to break some of the other geared hubs, and we have broken the Shimano LX hub in testing. Whereas none of our customers have even managed to break the safety shear pins in the Rohloff. In fact I witnessed the hub being tested and approved for TANDEM use at the Rohloff factory. Plus the bearings in the hub are larger than used in other hubs. So whereas some customers have worn out the bearings on the SRAM hubs by overloading their tandem trikes on long tours, I would not expect this problem with the Rohloff." greenspeed-trikes.com/support/newsletter/newsletter-2.html
