To clarify about the two sides, in the beginning there was no North and South, there was just the Mexican Mafia. The Nuestra Familia (Our Family) was formed when the Northern Mexicans broke away from the Mexican Mafia due to a lot of tension between the two sides. When the CA prison system basically split in a race war, The Northerners chose to side with the Black Guerilla Family and The Mexican Mafia chose to side with the Aryan Brotherhood or White Supremacists; this is why Norteños are usually good with all the black gangs. The "N" stands for "Nuestra Familia" The same way the Southsiders use 13 or X3 for the letter M, the northerners use the number 14 or X4 to represent their allegiance. Norteños are also less strict about the gang being "pure Mexican" they're good with whoever is down for them, so there's a lot of Black, Puerto Ricans, Pacific Islanders, etc, that are allowed into the family, whereas the Southsiders are much more strict about keeping their core Mexican. This is mostly because Northern California is completely racially and ethnically blended within the neighborhoods, Mexicans, Black, Samoans, Filipinos, Vietnamese, Puerto Ricans, and Middle-Eastern people, all grow up in the same neighborhoods together up North so they don't really feel the need to divide each other, which is why Northerners don't have issues with other races/ethnicities joining with them; but in Southern Cali, it's more segregated so there is specific Black neighborhoods, Mexican Neighborhoods, and Asian Neighborhoods which creates more of a division between them
