Jayson Tatum joins Point Forward the Podcast this week! Last week, we flew to Boston to talk with the four-time NBA All-Star about growing up in St. Louis, raising his son in the spotlight, and the weight that comes along with wearing a historic Boston franchise across your chest. And for the age of only 25? He’s doing pretty damn good.
Speaking of MVPs, the NBA is heading to Las Vegas this week for the in-season NBA Tournament. And while we still think there are way too many awards in circulation, we were very curious about the performances of two standouts in the current race for in-season NBA Tournament MVP: the young Tyrese Haliburton who is still going strong and the recently knocked-out De’Aaron Fox. And you know Andre had some thoughts on Fox after last year’s playoff series!
Tune in for the latest hoops insights and engaging sports talk with your hosts, former NBA teammates and lifelong friends, Andre Iguodala and Evan Turner.

Jt is so special to me as a player and to see Iggy and ET pay him THIS much respect and remind him, once again, he’s not just special - he’s special special - all time special. How tf did I get so blessed as a sports fan to have Tom Brady and Jayson Tatum play for my teams?!? It’s incredible. I don’t watch college ball, but I watch summer league every year and I knew from the first play in that first summer game. I had just bought a Hayward jersey, but I refreshed that team store constantly until I could get Tatum’s, and the rest history! ☘️❤

It’s deep here in Miami. We as fans know. Like even when it comes to “player development”, ppl don’t know that Spo literally will lock himself in a gym with a player and give them the ball till they make 75/100 3s while cursing at em. This is why when ppl doubt the Heat we just understand they don’t know ball on the level that we do, and that’s only cause we watch the genius that is also. We feel we can beat anyone.

Miami mucks the game up. They do things that you should do when you see it from afar. Miami playing that zone, they left the middle open knowing Boston would not attack and would pass it out for the three. When they played zone against Jokic, he ate that defense up and Miami had no Plan B to win that series.

Haters aren’t real fans, they just want instant gratification and don’t understand what it takes to win. Tbh, winning is so much sweeter when you ride with a team and player through all the ups and downs. It’s like an emotional, deep connection you have with sports that. It is all about the championship and winning, but the journey there is WHY it’s so special.

Growing up you would hear “Time fly’s” and didn’t fully understand it because when you are younger (Kid / teen) everything felt longer in a sense… next thing you know years go by and you think to yourself “Damn, time really does fly” and you reminisce about the old days. like JT said, you ain’t going to get that time back.

Bro spoke absolute facts about championships. I think in todays age we have distorted vision of how difficult it is to make the finals because we had the luxury of watching lebron james make it so many times but in reality whats distorted is the vision people have of lebron. I'm not even saying a single word about comparing him to mj or anyone else but just because we've seen lebron do it so many times in recent years, it has made people think "if lebron can go so many times including 8 consecutive seasons this stacked celitcs roster couldnt close the deal?" but thats not the reality of the situation. You want to know what the reality is? of the 30 NBA franchises in existence, 5 of those teams have never even made it to the finals a single time, another 7 teams have never won a championship. To put this in context, this means 40% of the franchises in the NBA have never won a ring. This is the league full of the very best in the world, winning is unbelievably hard regardless of how great you are. I have no doubt in my mind Jayson Tatum will retire with at least 2 rings based off his career trajectory but that loss in the finals isn't a stain on his career. It's a point of emphasis and realization winning a chip isn't all about talent, it's also about experience, mental toughness and discipline.

Im so happy dre talked about getting the ball in triple threat man. I feel like i look at basketball very detailed and I hate how a lot of basketball is played out of a live dribble now. Its called triple threat for a reason! People don’t understand how helpful it is to be able to catch the ball on the floor and be able to just survey and make a quick decision after you read the floor. When you catch the ball you can see the help if someone is getting ready to double you can read the actions of the offense while being under control you can size your guy up, jab, pump or pass fake all without a dribble not to mention shoot a shot without having to gather the ball. Thats what makes the mjs kobes jokic birds etc so tough man lost art.

I'm a little past the half way mark and Dre is talking about getting to his spot not trying to play above the arc with a live dribble allowing a team to double. I really hope JT takes this to heart because it's why this team when led by JT and JB blow so many 4th quarter leads in big games. I do like the adjustment with Derrick dribbling the ball up now being more of a facilitator because he will typically make the right play. But they fell into a similar situation losing to Golden State a couple days ago. Although they didn't double, Kuminga played excellent defense while Jayson dribbled the air out of the ball and shot a fade away contested 3 when all they needed was a two (or even possibly one free throw) to win.

I think the two teams that has earned a Zach lavine caliber player is either the knicks or the heat preferably the heat for what they have done in recent years

Obviously different personnel, different staffs, different cultures etc. but Tatum woulda benefitted tremendously with a vet like Iggy in his ear in that finals vs the golden state.

Can we have the both of y’all on the Celtics coaching staff?! Y’all are the best and most knowledgeable basketball players. Would love y’all wisdom on the bench to help motivate and bring intangibles to the team and coaches.
