These are the lessons we need! Most channels only focus on scales and soloing. What is missing is building progressions, chords, understanding diatonic chordal movement and adding tension. Thanks for the fantastic content.

Merci beaucoup. I'm still a beginner piano player, but I've worked on my music theory and this was well presented and made sense. I'm not going to pretend to play these until I earn my chops, but when my technique catches up, having this knowledge will make the journey that much easier.

Setting the standards (pun intended) for music theory, youtube videos. Packed with content, great editing, chapters, superior supporting graphics and meaningful examples. Curious to know why on the major chord the 11 sounds funny.

the 11th is considered an avoid note. That's because it's only a semitone away from the 3rd which creates a clash harmonically speaking. Ex the 11th of Cmaj would be an F, which is a semitone away from the third (E). You can still use it as a passing tone, which means that it's just quickly played and won't interfere with the chord too much.

Superbly structured and organized presentation. I'm a novice playing mostly pop songs and seach out alternative voicings usually by trial and error. Surprisingly often using an altered chord where a major will do is so satisfying.

why does no one talk about the dom11 chord with the major 3rd? you can build it 7x785. The clashing of intervals sounds pretty nice to me. nice breakdown though this deff would help an intermediate player a lot

Hey Eric, I think you are referring to the dom7sus4 which is discussed in this video?
@eric_james_music

@@Learnjazzstandards I’m talking about the dom11 that seems to be forbidden. 1 3 5 7 9 11. Keeping the major 3rd as well as the sus4/11. On guitar you would have the 1 3 b7 11. 7x785x being B11

In a triad, would the chord be fully diminished or half diminished? Because there wouldn't be a flat 7 or double flat 7, just the root, flat 3rd, and flat 5th, so I don't know what to call it
@Learnjazzstandards
@Learnjazzstandards Жыл бұрын
Hey Ethan, fully diminished! The qualities of triads are: major, minor, augmented, diminished

I discovered that most notes in the chord extensions occur in the song melody when playing piano and are useful only when comping. Can you comment on this?
