Check it out! Yesterday I practiced for 4 hours to go through a 7-step process that I normally take my students through in one month.
And in this video I'm going to show you how to go from not knowing a jazz standard at all, to being able to improvise over it on a fairly high level.

Great video. I watched it 3 times, so far, took notes and noted areas where I am "challenged" or my knowledge base is missing data. I tinkered with the method over Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. Limited to the first 6 notes of A Major. Changed the rhythm, changed the tempo, changed the chord progression, changed the order the notes were played. Sometimes I heard other melodies. Louis Armstrong It's A Wonderful World and When the Saints come Marching In. Using a F# minor progression, the same notes had a different flavor. Fun exercise and kept me busy for 2 hours on my "off practice day"

@@Learnjazzstandards I've been playing Gypsy Jazz guitar for ten years, so I have a feel for the basic essential chord progressions, ii - V - I, and so on. I can fake improvise over simple changes on guitar. I understand the modes, but can't play them! I've just started playing alto sax. I can squawk out the 2 octave diatonic C scale. 😂

Great lesson! Could you provide a little detail about how to proceed with the guide tone map when there are two chords in a bar? For example on | EbMaj7 C-7 | F-7 Bb7 |, would you play | G Eb | Ab D |, or rather | G Bb | Ab Ab |?

How do you connect up the 4 note arpeggios when there are 2 or more chords per bar..
@GeorgesFolkwald
@GeorgesFolkwald 3 жыл бұрын
you can just play two notes per chords, like step 3 when he plays the 3rds and 7ths

Is there a similar process for constructing bass lines
@Learnjazzstandards
@Learnjazzstandards 3 жыл бұрын
I personally don’t have an exact process for that , but I imagine it could be fairly the same. The difference would be for step 5, you would learn one chorus of a walking bass line, step 6 you’d compose your own baseline, step 7 you’d improvise your own bassline.

Good day Brent, I have a non-musical question for you... I have a Ibanez AF95 with the much beloved ACH pickups. Now my question(s) is, does your Ibanez AF have the stock pickups and getting your tone, does the, "thickness" of the strings make the pickups sound fatter? I am having a slight issue with the, "thinness" of my tone. Thank you.. Michael.
@Learnjazzstandards
@Learnjazzstandards 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Michael, the pickups on my guitar are just the stock pickups. There are are a handful of things to consider, string size yes, sometimes the pick makes a difference, but I think the amp makes a big difference. I’m actually for this video just running through an audio interface and some preamps in my DAW and I actually think the EQ is a bit too trebly for my liking.

Hi Brent, could you explain the difference between Step 6: Composing a solo and Writing a contrafact, or is there no difference?
@Learnjazzstandards
@Learnjazzstandards 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Zachary, good question! A contrafact is writing a new melody over an existing set of chord changes. For example, Oleo is a contra fact of Gershwin’s I Got Rhythm. So the melody of a tune usually has recurring themes in it. So do good solos, but it’s the difference between writing the head of a tune and composing an “improvisation” over a tune. Hope that helps clarify!

Could you specify what kind of process you used for linking the scales? This is the most complex stage and I think it would be helpful to analyse it. Thanks
@Learnjazzstandards
@Learnjazzstandards 3 жыл бұрын
Hey there! It's called "voiceleading." All I did was find the nearest scale tone from one scale to the next. If I'm playing up one scale and the chord changes in the next measure, instead of jumping to the root of the next scale, I'm finding the nearest one from the last scale tone I landed on. That could mean you are starting on the 9th, or 5th, or 7th of the scale.

If the scale outline was supposed to be simple, your starting/ending notes are kind of odd. I would play only major minor or dom 7 scales from root to 7th, but that's just my opinion; it's more simple for students too
