It's been WAY too long since I made a tutorial video, so I apologize. This is something I had been thinking about with some of my private students - how to break down bebop lines into small pieces. In this exercise, I demonstrate just a few of the literally hundreds (if not thousands) of ways that you can weave melodies from one chord tone to another within a key.
It's methodical and organized (as much as a left-handed brained person can be). I just used a C major 7th chord as an example, but obviously you can expand this idea into whatever chord type you want.
I used to think that improvising in a bebop style was some sort of magic - that musicians just had this amazing ability to envision these long and complex lines that included hip chromaticism and rhythmic phrasing.. and while that is true to a point, it's also much less of a mystery now that I learned this "bebop chain" method. When I learned this, it completely changed the way I practiced. I started writing my own lines, using shapes that fit well on the vibraphone and in different keys. I started to form good 'habits' - little melodic lines that I play without thinking about it.
This is how you can develop your vocabulary as a jazz musician - by learning the intricacies of these small melodic fragments, and then being able to weave in and out of them at will. This is how you master the bebop language. I hope these exercises will inspire you to write your own bebop lines!
Thanks for watching - if you enjoy this type of stuff, please subscribe/comment/like etcetera.

Interesting to take this concept a little further and get into the mindset of breaking every chord down into the 3rds its built with. From this perspective you're looking at 12 minor thirds and 12 major thirds in isolation that get put together to form any triad, 7th chord, etc... Practice dozens of these short approach phrases both for the minor and major 3rds. Then maybe when practicing a tune, think in terms of what quality of 3rds your using, starting on a particular note, and which thirds you are moving to; could result in a much different playing style.

Excellent lesson; good to see you back as teacher. Your other videos have been delightful. This kind of concept has been so important to me recently. I’ve been doing this kind of thing with fragments I picked up from Charlie Parker that target the third of the next chord, and chaining the fragments across chords, like on II V I

You can take the same concept and just adapt it to work with the different types of chords - just pay attention to which approaches require a whole step vs. half step. Trust your ears!

Good stuff. I have a question. There are 24 short melodies with five notes. Isn't that hard to memorize? How to do that?
@TimCollinsVibes
@TimCollinsVibes 3 жыл бұрын
That's a good question...I think methodical practice of just a few of them can go a long way. After all, it only takes a few seconds to play one of them.. So you could theoretically practice one of them 20 times in about a minute or so, then continue on with your day. I think practicing regularly but in very short intervals is really effective (at least for me it is). As with everything, don't be in a rush to learn the whole thing in one day! Take your time.

By strong beats you mean mainly beats 1 and 3 right? So if we have a non-chord tone on 2 and 4 that's alright? Thanks for the video!

For this exercises, yeah it was 1 and 3. But depending on your rhythmic send you could mess with it! Always trust your ears for the melody and your butt for the rhythm hehe
