In the first half of this video, I explain the relationship between voice leading and improvising melodies over a ii-V-I progression.
In the second half of the video, I demonstrate that you can use the same approach on any set of chords - using Gmaj7 and Dbmaj7.
I'm using the David Friedman series of vibraphone mallets in this video: amzn.to/2F3g7Gk

This is the way to show how harmony continuity is crucial to sound mellodically, across chord changes, sing the voices of the chords and embellish then, and you've got great lines. Very helpfull mr. Collins!

As a bass player (therefore not into vibes) I must just saying that this channel is really MASSIVE! It combines lots of interesting topics with clear theoretical explanations, with tasteful musical examples. One of the best resources to immediately starting to playing jazz and improvisation on the tube! 👏

Brilliant! Thanks for making these videos. You make me want to start learning the vibes (I've been caressing this dream for decades now). What about a video where you improvise with all 4 mallets all the way through? (Just as a challenge)

These videos have made me realise that my vibe solos are shit because they have no structure and I don't think about chord tones like I should. I gotta practice this method more.

Nice video! So when practicing voice leading, are you hitting the voice leading note on beat 1 of every measure or does it vary depending on the line? Thank you!
@TimCollinsVibes
@TimCollinsVibes 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I practiced putting it on beat 1 in every bar, but once you get the hang of it, you can put it on the "4&" of the previous measure to make it swing a bit more. So the more advanced way is to vary it depending on the line.

Which grip are you using? I generally use Stephens
@TimCollinsVibes
@TimCollinsVibes 6 жыл бұрын
I used Stephens when I played classical marimba (years ago) but on vibes I use the Burton grip. I don't think it really matters though - whatever works.

Thanks! I'm a beginner composer; have some music background, but need this and other practical theory. Have an idea that diminished and augmented chords are nice passing tones between major and minor "anchor" chords. Here are two works I made which I believe illustrate this: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rLF-qsmbuMu2cZs.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/a9ZmqsSlur7TkYU.html Also, I like the concept of a rhythmic cadence, in that the rhythm and time value of notes create a "question" and must then have a rhythmic "answer". I am happy to share ideas and musical ideas which seem to work for me.
