a "bad" or "below average" kendrick album is still a kendrick album at the end of the day. damn is by no means a bad album in the grand scheme of things. even though you're prob not wrong about it not delivering AS hard as tpab (what could?), you'll still absolutely enjoy it and probably want to come back to a lot of songs on it. but hey, if you go in with low expectations it might blow you away.

I think it was perfect how you ended with explaining how you can hand the information to the caterpillar and then that's all you can do, followed up by saying "damn..." Because DAMN. as an album really feels like Kendrick Lamar's struggle through having that same realization and not knowing where to go or how to cope with it, leading him to start looking inward to create DAMN. and later Mr. Morale.

let me break it down to you: Hip Hops whole foundation was sprouted from Jazz. How Hip Hop was born was thru people finding snippets of loops in jazz songs and layering many loops to create a song (AKA Sampling). the most famous example would be Shook Ones pt2, where the drums are sampled off a jazz artist i cant name atm and the synth being a sample from herbie hancock. In the 90's, the East and West coast both used the same formula but had different sounds; that's where sub genres of hip hop come in. Genres like "gangsta rap" and literally "Jazz Hip Hop" were born thru sampling. Jazz is one of the main components to why Hip Hop is a thing nowadays, but Rap was made on its own. The way i think of Hip Hop is "digital jazz with poetry", "digital jazz" is terrible phrasing but what i mean is composing music with similar but more advanced instruments, samples found online and shit. i love both genres.
@r6henny
@r6henny Ай бұрын
as well as the influence of jazz on hip hop is why their sound is super similar. my consensus is the pocket/rhythm. also gotta realize Hip Hop has gone thru generations, meaning it's evolved but has similar concepts. think of it like the game "Telephone" where a message is passed down a line of people and the original message could be very different but similar to what the last person was told. 2000's artists were inspired by what 90's artists did but had a very different sound, same goes with 2010's to the 2000's. at the start it was more jazzy, but hip hops groove was mainly "hip" and "hop", yk bootsncats type shit. 2000's tried finding a new angle, 2010's became the digital age which opened more possibilities, and what i expect to evolve the game is more experimental hip hop, or a combo of synth wave and hip hop. Hip hop works best when it works well with other genres. in my eyes, hip hop is a second opinion to another songs genre; a different take if you will. it's where creativity shines bright because a hip hop songs core melody could be genreless but still sound like hip hop. it's awesome

This was a fun listen. I enjoy your style, subbed!! If you enjoy hip hop albums with jazz influence, you should check out some of Tribe Called Quests albums, and De La Soul as well. They’re probably not quite as heavy as TPAB with with jazz influence, but it’s most definitely there.

I love jazz because of how many modern genres it has heavily influenced. Like hip hop and rock and a bit of pop (it's watered down but it's still there). It's such a wide reaching genre
