Alexander Varlamov - composer, arranger, singer, conductor, leader of one of the best Soviet jazz orchestras, author of over 400 pieces of music
At the age of 8 in Simbirsk he published his first musical works - the play "Sadness" and the waltz "Evening"
In 1922 he entered GITIS (in the same workshop with Erast Garin and Nikolai Okhlopkov). Then he went from there to the music school. Gnesinykh (classmate in composition class - Aram Khachaturian)
Varlamov developed a craving for jazz thanks to his passion for radio engineering. Through a makeshift radio, he listened to jazz music.
He made his debut as a jazz leader in 1934. He became famous thanks to his collaboration with the Negro singer from the USA Celestina Kool. Varlamov showed individual traits that contributed to the formation and development of early Soviet jazz
In the autumn of 1938 he created the jazz orchestra of the All-Union Radio Committee, with which he worked until September 1939, having managed to take part in the first domestic television program.
Varlamov was also a talented translator, he translated foreign songs and performed them
Before the war, he led the jazz orchestra of the Moscow State Technical University named after N. Bauman. From the summer of 1940 to the summer of 1941 he was the chief conductor of the State Jazz Orchestra of the USSR. At the beginning of the war, the State Jazz of the USSR was transformed into the Exemplary Jazz Orchestra of the People's Commissariat of Defense and, almost in full force, went to the front, where most of the orchestra members died
In January 1943, the composer was arrested on libel and sentenced to eight years in prison. He served his term in the Northern Urals, where until 1948 he led a propaganda team and a jazz orchestra. Was released in 1951
Varlamov was rehabilitated in 1956, his membership in the Union of Composers was restored. After returning to Moscow, Alexander Varlamov composed music for variety orchestras, television programs, and films. made a number of recordings of his own compositions with a symphonic-jazz composition
In 1979, Varlamov was awarded the title of Honored Artist of the RSFSR.
