Appreciate video content! Apologies for the intrusion, I would appreciate your initial thoughts. Have you heard about - Riddleagan Smart Hands Remedy (erm, check it on google should be there)? It is a good exclusive product for learning piano fast without the headache. Ive heard some extraordinary things about it and my old buddy Taylor after a lifetime of fighting got astronomical results with it.

I love the way you break this stuff down and demystify it for classically trained students. It would be awesome if this exact progression of lessons existed as a 'learning track' on your site. I just picked up a membership recently and am having a ton of fun with the 'How to Improvise With The X Scale' courses.

WOW, this style of teaching is EXACTLY what I've needed! A complete yet succinct overview, giving ME control to identify areas of weakness and dive into them. With highly capable learners that have a decent but patchy foundation of understanding, so much time is wasted by trickling information in a sequential manner. This demystifies the more advanced levels that I haven't gotten to yet, but now have in my sights. THANK YOU!

I am an older guy who listened to all kinds of music during my life, and now, I am beginning to learn the inner workings. I have just learned to play the 12 majors and the notes on the staff. Your example of these jazz sounds was excellent, especially tying the sounds to the known players who used them. I found this video to be encouraging, if a little daunting. Because my dad is now 101 years old, I know that I will have decades to get this down, along with a firm foundation in classical. Well done.

Great lesson, Jonny. I realize, your lesson is just a survey but it should be note that to become proficient in any one of the techniques you covered, especially the later ones, we're talking countless hours and hours (or months and months) of intense practice. So, I like that you refer us to your courses on each of the techniques you demonstrated.

I went back to playing classical piano and hit a great many 7th chords both in the Classical and Boroque period pieces. So I may take a break and relax with some jazz after listening to your 10 steps video. I am sure it will help with the Classics I am tackling too. I just wish my brain were as sharp as before - now that I have hit 74. You play wonderfully so -thank you for your fabulous, exciting and inspiring video, Jonny.

Amazing 🤩 this is so good to know where I am in my playing and what I need to do. I tend to play 7th chords in the different inversions on my right hand and might add a run. Kinda randomly to be honest but occasionally hit some nice sounding stuff. This explains what is happening and really helps me on the theory. Thanks loads!!

You don't have to complete each step perfectly to move onto the next step. Some keys will always be harder than others, only because you will spend more time in certain keys. I actually started learning jazz at step 6 (A and B voicings) because I needed to play with others in class immediately. The teacher gave me those to just to get me started. Do I know all my minor scales in every key instantly? No, but that doesn't keep me from playing and having fun while I learn more.

I studied classical music (clarinet 8th grade), majored in music in high school, then picked up sax and jazz piano to learn jazz... you have just summarised what probably took about 2 years of weekly lessons and practice to learn in 20 minutes! But it would still take years of practice to just to get a basic grasp of everything in this video... I reckon about about 4 of your steps per year (1 step every 3 months), so give the average person 2.5 years?

OK. I want too sign up! I practice 3 to 4 hours a day in all 12 keys I know all my major minor cords and my major minor half diminushed, fully diminished, 7th diminushed. 9th, 11ths, 13th. I have extremely long fingers.. So why can I not play jazz? It is driving me crazy! I think I will start with your extentions course and drop 2 cords, then 4th intervals which I already do but not like you do.. You are great! Just saying.

I am a little bit confuse with this things. Jonny, if you can talk about the Barry Harris jazz armony and about the 6th disminished chords, like Barry Harris teach, the bebop, and how to improvise with those things. Thanks.
@WoodyGamesUK
@WoodyGamesUK 3 жыл бұрын
From what I remember (I never took the time to practice enough to be able to apply the concept), you use the 6th diminished scale to harmonise a melody by playing a different chord for each note at the top. The reason it sounds good is that the chords alternate between diminished chords and 6 chords, which is functionally equivalent to having V - I resolutions.
