Thank you for putting this together! I can imagine that this took quit of bit of effort. But it was so so very helpful for me. I've never been interested in Jazz at all but this actually has me excited to try these books!

This information is so helpful. Thank you so much. Gershwin’s song “I’ll Build A Stairway to Paradise” is a song in the movie An American in Paris. The movie can be seen on Turner Classic Movies.

Very useful. I bought all 5 of the Alfred (Martga Mier) books as I quite enjoyed the pieces in the All-in-one books. The other books look interesting too. Also they are all in the piano marvel app which helps with the initial stages of learning. You still should buy the books Now trying to find the time to practice is a different story.

Just a suggestion, if you can add another 🎤 so you have one for yourself and the other for the instrument.

I haven't done a pop series, yet, but might in the future. I've done a video on a pop piece, "Hallelujah." Thanks for the comment!

You are clear Dr. One question. What tips do you suggest for fingerings? I try to look at hymns which don't suggest any fingerings and I am always at a loss. Thank you in anticipation.

Does playing note for note like this actually teach you improvisation and help you later to play from lead sheets?

Thanks so much for this great review! I was just wondering, how does it work with searching the songs from the Alfred Music website? Do I key in the name from that particular song? Because i tried to search under Martha Miers and that was not found under the search bar. Would that be a free version or i have to pay if i wanted to get a particular song from the first book shown in this video? Thanks

Your swing is not very good. There's a reason that all of the Jazz masters use little to no rubato when they swing. It's too complicated of a topic for a KZfaq comments section(that would have some math, history, and musicology), but to sum it up, I don't feel your swing. And I don't listen to music with a "stickler" mentality, trying to find mistakes. Your general explanation of Jazz as a style was very surface level compared to your descriptions of classical music. Although you are a great teacher for classical piano and piano technique, based on your playing here, I don't think you should be giving instruction in the Jazz domain.

I feel the comment excessively critical. Obviously this review serves as an intro to Jazz from a classical point of view, instead of trying to teach Jazz at a deep level. Unfortunately, there are not many good learning materials of Jazz music for beginners. That's why this video is so very helpful to a classically trained student like me. I enjoy listening to the samples and think they are very good. I applaud the effort!

@The Key of Life, let's hear your swing and not "very surface level" description. You sound so correct, but I learned nothing from your comment, not very Jazzy for sure.

As a beginner, rather than a jazz snob (looking at you Key of Life - rude), I found this very helpful. Your instruction is very helpful for my Jazz domain.

There is no wrong note in Jazz, hence there is no wrong rubato. It's a matte of taste. This is an age-old debate where musical interpretation is quite subjective. I listened through all the pieces, most of the interpretation in this review is quite tasteful. Georgia on my mind is my favorite. I do not even know how you could play that piece without rubato.
