I was 16 and took the bus from Bakersfield to see the Grateful Dead at the Hollywood Bowl in June of 1972. The night before we drove by the Whisky A Go Go. The marquee read " Mahavishnu Orchestra". We parked, ran in, and got right up to the stage. What a night!

I’ve been listening to bootlegs from around that time and man, those guys weren’t screwing around. I can’t imagine what seeing them must have been like, unfortunately I’m only 25. John is one of my main influences, he singlehandedly opened up the world of jazz to me.

McLaughlin has got a lot of stories here. Good to hear him talk. And laugh. 40 minutes in and he's still talking about the 1960s! The bit about the Mahavishnu breakup at 45 minutes: leadership & lifestyle differences: can the two mix? I suspect it's a common tale in all different walks of life. Perhaps it's a case of "sad but true". An entertaining interview all the same.

Awesome interview! One of the very few that doesn’t constantly interrupt the guest with unnecessary comments, thanks for keeping it real. John is one of my main influences and a massive hero of mine. He singlehandedly got me into jazz and exotic/modal playing. A huge revelation and totally pushed my playing to the next level. The body of work that he has put out over the years is astounding, such a prolific and diverse musician. I’ve been listening to some Mahavishnu bootlegs and man, those guys were not screwing around! Live John sounds like he’s from a different dimension. One question: How do you get to interview all these amazing jazz artists?! It’d be a dream come true to talk these guys!

Fantastic. New tidbits I had never heard of in all the discussions and interviews I have heard or read about as a fan over 40 years. Thank you jazz talk. FYI, the recording that was finally released is titled The Lost Trident Sessions. And I believe there is some KZfaq footage of the Montreux jam with Billy Cobham posted.

Great job Preston and of course John who has been a constant inspiration since seeing him play my high school auditorium in Tucson AZ, when Mahavishnu played one of their pre-tour "sorting things out" gigs. I was in my second year at the university music school.. and it literally changed everything. Couldn't play guitar for a few days but I did write a bunch of material the following weeks. So great to see John's youtube presence double and triple. Thanks John, both musically and spiritually.

I'm glad to see John mention Hindu thought. As a Hindu myself, I've seen Hinduism help people achieve greater heights in whatever they do because of the boundless nature of the traditions which break through any dogma.
