The Octatonic, or 'Diminished' scale is a wonderful harmonic tool that fits in many places within jazz harmony. It has a very modern sound to it.
In this lesson, I've composed a 4 measure long line that uses the 'Half/Whole' Octatonic (or 'diminished') scale.
At the beginning of the video, I break down the scale itself and how it's actually composed of 4 separate Dominant seventh chords.
Then, I demonstrate the line on piano and show how it relates to the scale.
You'll see how I practice the line in all twelve keys (certainly not without a few 'mistakes'). Hopefully this will inspire you to work on playing lines in all twelve keys!
Playing in all 12 keys is essential for learning how to play jazz. That's why I started recording these little etudes.
