Jazz Violin Lesson: How to think and play like a HARMONY instrument! 7th chords + ii-V-I progression

I'm excited to present a new educational video I made to teach string players to really OWN their jazz harmony and how to 'comp' (create improvised accompaniment) in jazz styles on the violin!
This video teaches you how to build the main types of 7th chords and how they fit within the classic ii-V-I progression found all over jazz music.. then how to actually strum them as chords!
If you're interested in playing jazz on a string instrument I think you'll really find this useful.

Wow! I’m so happy I found your channel! I am finding opportunities to play violin in genres other than classical, and I am ready to learn as much as I can. New sub. I really enjoy theory and I have worked through the real books using my keyboard. I never thought of doing the same with my violin. Duh!

Such an interesting video! I’ve been wanting to get into playing jazz on the cello for a long time but have found very few helpful resources like this one! You break down the concepts in a way that makes it very easy to follow along with and understand

Thank you for this wonderful lesson! On your 5-string Violin, do you tune ALL strings to perfect 5ths? Or, do you sweeten the tuning?

Personally I tune to all 5ths, but there are definitely some fiddlers out there who use a wide variety of scordatora tuning! This lesson is definitely geared towards understanding how a mandolin or violin works through a perfect 5th system though. Glad you found it helpful!

why do you take of your E's

Are you asking why I avoid the E string on most of these chords? The lower, thicker strings ring more when strumming, and it's good to try and allow the harmony range to be below the melody for balance reasons.

😆You can do it! Get yourself a simple looper and force yourself to learn and record the chords!

Please work on understanding the significance of dB and why your output should be in the range of from -6 to -3 dB so your audience can actually hear it without maxing everything out Learn to watch your meters. It it were a drink you wouldn't even be half full.

The audio on this sounded absolutely fine to me - volume less than half way up on my phone and I can hear every word and note perfectly.
