I've got a few criticisms of Jazza's figure drawing (namely the stiffness and scratchiness of the lines) but proportion is NOT one of them. Holy cow he's good at structuring the body well.
@Kinnacat
@Kinnacat 6 жыл бұрын
Because people come in all shapes and sizes, the proportional representation of that particular model might be off while it still looks just fine in the end. Maybe a neck was longer or a foot was bigger than the photo, but it still looks like a well-proportioned person. Focusing on making the two halves of the person match is what matters, as long as you're not being judged on perfect accuracy to the models themselves. Just seeing how it was off from the original is what you're learning for next time :)

It's crazy hard (haha) to admit, but I actually used to randomly scrub to a timestamp and pause *porn* as drawing anatomy practice. I'd only draw one person in each scene I paused, but as awkward as it was it made for damn good figure practice. There's always someone twisting, bending, stretching, etc. and with the facial expressions, muscles, and shadows/lighting made for good perspective practice. Very awkward, but I feel like googling "naked women" is a bit creepier than straight up porn lmao

For any artist looking to improve their sense of proportions, I recommend taking a class in figure drawing. Over a short amount of time you get a lot better at seeing proportions very quickly. You have to because the model will always be moving, nobody can stand perfectly still. After the class you will notice your skill in drawing other things will have improved dramatically.

One of my favorite backgrounds for my laptop growing up was a drawing of a topless woman wearing a really cool skirt, kneeling, and you saw her from the back. The lines were so beautiful and flowed really well. Her hair, the small of her back, the band on the skirt, it was just incredibly cool. And I felt sort of contemplative when I saw it. My parents were a bit... surprised by this, lol. I was a teen, yes, but I was a straight girl, and with a low sex drive to boot, so they thought it was really odd. And I knew they looked at it and immediately felt it was somewhat sexual, but I never saw it that way. Am I innately sexual to them because I have breasts now? No, so... that thinking was also always a bit strange to me as well. We never really understood each other on that. Of all the things I want to be able to reliably draw, it’s people (of course, why should it be something easy, lol). As a writer, I’ve spent hundreds of hours over the years, searching images for characters somewhat like mine, to have inspirational images. At some point I’m sure I’ll commission some work. But... if I had the power to not just describe them in words, but in pictures, that would be... amazing. There’s a kind of power in being able to capture the impression of someone, their physicality and intent, to discern not just what’s there, but the truth of it. I very much hope that one day I can achieve it and have that ability for myself.

if you want to try figure drawing, for the first time, try working with less time first like 30 sec then gradually move up to 1 min, 2, 5, 30, and 1 hr. By doing so, you limit the amount of lines you draw and have more fluid linework instead of scratchy sketchiness. Especially if you are working on a smaller working area! Definitely working with bigger pages like a newsprint pad and using something like hard charcoal or a china marker will allow you to draw from your shoulder and arm, rather than your wrist. Using these tips and tools will step up your figure drawing game exponentially 👌

Good job, Jazza! These look great. I took a figure sculpture class when I was in college. I just got rid of my sculptures that have been in storage because my husband said we could never display headless naked old men in our home. That class was a hoot. It was taught by an elderly priest who had been doing it forever and he was super comfortable about having naked models and talking about their bodies, while the class was full of somewhat mortified students.

Am I the only one who clicked because they were genuinely interested in the topic and the thumbnail wasn't a factor at all? *Edit:* hey thanks for all the likes! I wasn't expecting that many people to be on board with this. Lol! Also come on Y'all, most "artists" couldn't care less that a figure is naked, it's not about that. There's more to a human being than their genitals. Some people are actually interesting in learning anatomy and how to capture motion, learn how to find and identify the line of action, and are genuinely interested for academic purposes. Stop calling everyone liars. Just because a lot of people are pervs don't expect everyone to be. Some people are actually here to learn, not to satisfy primal urges. Lmao. Just as a side note, I'm a female not a male...to everyone who keeps calling me a guy. (I don't get triggered by it, it just feels weird being called something you aren't. Lol)

*Hey, you!* Yes, you random artist scrolling in the comment section. Do you do this? Do you ever do life/gesture drawings? If not, do it! -The time limit can help increase how quickly you can put down art on paper -It helps build up your mental library so you can create more poses from memory -It reduces stiffness in your artwork -It helps build your understanding of anatomy and relative proportion It doesn't matter if you draw realism, semi realism, cartoony, or you draw everything like the powerpuff girls or adventure time with wacky, clearly unnatural proportions. It will help you SO MUCH to do these figure drawings! It's also a great way to relax and a way to force yourself to draw when you don't really want to draw anything.

I *_must_* The way they told me also helped but shush Also, before you mad people look at my channel or something and realize I'm 10. Please, I don't mean drawing them nude. Besides, you don't consider that some children know more than people feel they should. I meant drawing figures. Looking up figure references and just drawing the position instead of focusing on what clothes would do.

Hi jazza. I dont know if you will be able to read this with all the comments, but i just want to say that i love your channel. This video really connected with me because over the last semester i took a figure drawing class at my college. The class has taught me the beauty of the human body and the many sizes and shapes. Its a completely different feeling have a person pose for you to draw than just using pictures from a website. I went from not knowing a thing about drawing a human to being happy with my the way my artwork came out. Im glade to watch your videos because it gives me new ways to look at art and explore the many ways to create art. So i would like to thank you for bring joy into my life with your videos.

Rory More Ahhh..thank you so much for the suggestions. Is it okay to use reference photo while drawing? Or drawing purely out of my imagination and create original character is the best way? I've been only inking anime and manga characters using the pic as reference but I feel like I'm just plagiarizing the artist's work. So, I'm on a journey to find my art style. Watching so many Masters in youtube and trying to learn just in case if it helps me. Do you also suggest I should start with understanding human anatomy and lighting first?
@92Roar
@92Roar 6 жыл бұрын
像δκιβσ 100% starting with realistic human anatomy really helps when you do stylised people! Whether that be eastern or western comic styles :) Drawing from reference isn’t bad! One could argue life drawing seen in this video is just “drawing from reference”. It’s a valuable skill! I do recommend getting images of people and then drawing them in manga form though for the best training :3

I think it's the bible belt affect that associates any nudity that isn't bathing with sensuality. I used to, then I had to take life drawing as part of my graphic/web design degree and quickly learned that after an hour or two of me blushing they stop being 'naked' and become 'nude' And yes...I ended up focused on making sure what ended up on the paper was more human than eldritch horror and totally forgot their was a naked person up there.

i know this is an old video and i’ve been following Jazza for a while but i never saw this one, anyways i’ve never been to a live drawing thing but some of my friends have sent me pictures of them (in undergarments) to just practice because they actually like seeing my progress and are very interested in my drawing techniques. Although i really don’t draw realistic art often i’ve gotten better and have come to liking it a lot, at first it is extremely hard especially when your just looking at a picture and seeing every little detail at once it can be stressful but it gets easier and more fun as you go on. Definitely proud of Jazza for getting the bigger focused details and not stressing about the smaller things in the pictures and freaking out because that’s exactly what i did the first time i tried something like this.

I never drew humans, I hated it but after drawing the human figure over and over and over, I started loving it and became much better with the figure, action lines, proportions, everything. If I can find another life drawing course around where I live, I want to go and draw again. The fun of drawing a pose in 5 min, 2 min, 1 min, 30 seconds, 10 seconds! So much fun especially when the model jokes around with us.

I'm 16 and like 3 months ago when i was still 15 i was with my mom and i asked her "Would you get mad at me if i draw a nude person? Like, if i ever do that would you want to see it, or if you don't want to see it but you do it would you do anything against my drawing?" And she told me "A long time ago i drew a nude person. Now let me tell you that your grandma wasn't too happy about it, but i understand. It would be wrong for me to tell you not to do it when i already did it and i get that a nude body is the most normal thing in the world. I'll just tell you, i don't want you obsessed with nudity, like, don't do it too often cause many people won't take it in the right way and you can get in trouble" to be honest she took my questions wayyy better that what i was expecting, i tought that she was more conservative and I'm just glad she understands the artistic point of it. From my point of view, a human body is one of the most beautiful things in the world. I just love how different every person is, from the 1000s of skintones to the 1000s of sizes and I wish that people would understand that our anatomy is pure art. With this video i got the missing motivation i needed and now I'm sure that one day I'll paint a real body and I'm gonna be proud of that. Thanks for reading thorough my broken english, have a nice day 💙

Don’t be ashamed to go to this kinds of classes, they’re super useful and fun! By the way Jazza, I’ve got an exercise for you! (And of course,for everyone who’s interested) I’ve done this several times at my life drawing classes and the results are quite surprising. Take an image as the ones you’ve been using and start drawing ONLY by placing the SHADOWS in the paper. NO LINEWORK! After you’ve done that, place the linework. Surprisingly, the drawing will probably turn out better than you thought. That’s because our brain has to focus harder on dimensions and distances, so we end up drawing those more accurately. It’s quite amazing!

Going to actual classes is really valuable, drawing a 3D object from real life is a lot more organic and a very different experience than referencing photos. Photo referencing is a wonderful commodity, and can help massively in the learning and development of our art, but I think it is important to supplement this by drawing from life, as it gives you a better understanding of the form as you view the subject from slightly different angles, and it becomes easier in a way to stylize..or emotionalise (?XD) a sketch, rather than it being a mechanical copy. Just having this experience is very enriching, even if you're not doing it all the time.

I had my first live drawing session when I was 18 and I remember thinking it would probably be embarrassing, but literally 2 minutes in you're so focused on what you're doing there's no awkwardness at all. Those lessons really helped me. I also remember being given 5 minutes and thinking it wouldn't be nearly enough time, but after doing it a couple of times I started moving around the room and drawing the model twice from different angles because It seemed like way too much time to spend on just one drawing. It's amazing how quickly these muscles develop. I highly recommend trying it out if you get the chance.

NSFW stands for not safe for work. Any kind of nudity would not be acceptable to see at work (depending on your work, obviously). If your boss wouldn't like seeing a naked man on your computer then it is NSFW. But no, there is nothing inherently sexual about a naked body. What makes it sexual is the situation. But NSFW and sexual content are different.

My point will always stay that there is nothing that should be weird about a boob. A man's chest can be shown and it's not very different from a woman's.

People-watching helps a lot too! It's drawing from life as it is, constantly moving and therefore having to be captured as quickly as possible. I find that it's quite relaxing, since you're usually more focused on the bigger picture of the whole person in this one moment, instead the finer points-- it really helps you loosen up.

Have you ever tried drawing something only looking at the negative space around the object and not the object itself? That probably doesn't make any sense, but if you know what I'm talking about it is a really good way to tap into the right brain

Paint Brush Jewel I’m sure a lot of school starting artists probably have. By that I mean people who take art as a class in school (like high school), as I learned about negative space in my first year of high school. So yes, some people who watch these videos are probably artists that know what you’re talking about, and I know that it’s very common for it to be used by pro artists to “warm up”

I know what you are talking about and my figure drawing professor from last semester loved negative space and he had us do several negative space drawings with with the side of a charcoal stick so that we weren't drawing just an outline. (my professor also wanted us to do as little outline as possible in our figure drawing, if that makes sense...) Anyways, it was actually very fun!

Both my parents and my friends always ask to see my sketchbook and I always refuse, 'cause I know they'd overreact. They once saw a drawing of mine in which the girl had the TINIEST bit of cleavage showing and they went ham, lecturing me about how "inappropriate" it was. Smh. (I don't know how'd they react to nude drawings - though I don't think I want to find out, I'd probably be disowned lol) *Edit:* they found my "nsfw" sketchbook and they made me rip out all the pages and throw them in the trash, all my work gone just because my fucking parents are ignorant as hell oml

So last semester I had a live model class and we had this lovely young woman who had a sporty body and very fun to draw lines. The first class of that semester was hella awkward but then it all calmed down. Now, this semester I’m in anatomy drawing and hoooo boy! I walked into class the other day a bit late and as soon as I close the door the door of the little changing room opens and BAM the first thing I see as I look up is a mans you know what. Apparently we had a new model....well I can at least tell you that he’s a show-er not a grower. All in all tho he has some pretty amazing muscle lines for an older dude
