It has to be said that this is a sad recording - and most of it can be heard on the Riverside Box Set of 12 CDs. Bill was desperate for money to fund his addiction to heroin and the recording company agreed to advance him a sum to buy drugs if he would make a recording in the studio of solo piano. He was high on the drug at the time. They asked him to finish each number and leave a gap then start the next one but he didn't comply and some of the tracks he rambled on and seemed not to be able to finish the piece. They rejected the recordings and stuffed them up on a shelf and didn't release them. Someone discovered them posthumously and released them all. It does show Bill's incredible harmonic sense and spooky level of rhythm comprehension. He was like none other and will never be surpassed. His brain was a one-off. He once said "Music contains more of me than anything else in my life" What a legacy he left us.

I first heard and fell in love with Bill Evans' music in 1959 when I was 13 years old. I am now 77 and Bill Evans is still my favorite musician. There has never been another like him.

오히려 에반스의 음악은 외로움보다는 안정감을 느끼게 해주는 것 같아요 불꺼진 방 안에서 스텐드 하나 켜놓고 의자에 기대앉아 생각에 빠지는 그런 느낌 무언가 부족하진 않지만 그렇다고 만족스럽지도 못한 그런 안정감이 느껴지는것 같습니다

Bill played with a supurb, intensity as Chet played every note has a clarity second to none. What a wonderful generation of jazz musicians. I'm glad I'm of the same generation and grew up with their music. Lets not muddy the waters as some of the comments have tried. It's the music that counts. He was in between labels and had a commitment with the first label. He just went into the studio and created poetry in two albums.

외로운 건반의 길 위로 걸어가는 손가락처럼 가녀린 사내는 검은 벤치에 앉아 힘겨운 반음의 한숨을 내쉬네. 고개를 떨어뜨린 해는 하얀 그림자를 떨구고 그 그림자의 그림자 따라 일어선 사내의 주머니에서 흘러나온 열 손가락. 음악의 제 갈 길 찾아 떠나가네. 그렇게 텅 빈 손의 사내 피로한 피아노처럼 드러누워 한없이 그리운 손가락 한없이 그리워하네. 어느새 내린 어둠 저편에 숨은 별들에게서 빛의 음표 하나둘 떨어져 울음을 참고 있는 남자의 얼굴을 덮네. 우울한 피아노를 온몸으로 어루만지는 피아니스트와 함께 깊이 잠이 든 그의 유일한 음악의 벗 재즈는 마침내 마침표 같은 쉼표를 누르고 어지러운 음악의 꿈속으로 들어가네. 꿈의 밤하늘에서 가만히 지구의 재즈에 귀기울이는 태양의 음계 밖 별들 수없이 많은 빛의 손가락으로 우주의 무한한 코드를 짚으며 은하수의 울음(鬱音)을 우네. 아! 그리하여 빛으로 흐르는 우주의 음악 눈으로 듣는 Bill Evans ㅡ 라는 이름을 가진 늙은 천재 재즈 피아시스트의 감은 눈 그 속으로 영혼의 고막을 흔드는 음악의 검은 눈물이 흐르고 흐르네.
