For the GMs you can see the exhaust brake working with the cruise control. Try coming down a hill in tow haul with exhaust brake and set the cruise and use the ACC/Dec settings to control your speed. It will be more responsive than what you see just running around with it on.

I agree with you I have a Ford f250 6.7l and that exhaust brake is not as strong as I would like it to be. I notice it works when I tap the brakes like I'm pumping it instead of gently pushing it and after I got it tuned the exhaust braking has gotten a lot better. Awesome video it helped me really pay attention to my payload capacity when towing my RV.

If you haven't already done so, have disc brakes installed on your 5th wheel. They will make the difference you're looking for in stopping ability. I used Performance Trailer Brakes out of Norman Oklahoma. They use mobile crews that travel around doing those installs. (You could make another great video) They installed them on my 2019 Grand Design 310-GK in 2020 while in a state park in Southern Texas. At that time it cost approximately $2200.

Great video, yes when towing rear end gearing is so important. That's why the heavier duty truck you get the more gearing you get. Allison 6 speed was where it was at. It definitely felt more like the Aison imo.👍👍

Good video. We picked up a low mile '21 this summer, we had a new '22 on order but it was pushing out so far we decided to kill the order and buy a used one. I love the truck, tons of power and really good fuel mileage when towing our smaller toyhauler. PS: Love to see you rolling through Utah. Can even see where my house is in the far distance at 5:22 lol where the two mt's meet.

JB. I switched from a 18 Ram 3500 to a 22 GMC AT4 HD 2500. I was concerned about the exhaust brake as well. Took it in to the shop I was so concerned. I learned a few things in the nearly year I’ve had it. The exhaust brake is fully automated, unlike the two stage in the ram (full and auto). That being said in cruise control it works with no driver input. Outside of cruise control you have to apply the brakes to the extent you want to slow down - then remove your foot, the exhaust brake will continue to hold your rate of deceleration/speed. It takes a while to actually figure out. I tow in Colorado so play with it in the hills without your fifth wheel to get familiar and comfortable with operation. Once you get it apply it to towing. In tow haul it is way more aggressive. Note: refrain from hitting your brakes too hard because if the truck downshifts you will have to turn your exhaust brake off and manually upshift to get out of the deceleration. Hope this helps. Good stuff!

Nice video JB. The GM trucks are very nice, I was sooo close to getting one but I couldn’t pull the trigger when you looked at the entire package for me. When it comes to tire pressure I always run what truck asks for on the book with trailer. Unloaded, I do take a few pounds out of the tires for a little better ride. This video had to be a month or so ago since diesel is still that high. My current diesel price is around $4.29 a gallon without any discounts at all. I’m hearing it might comes down another .20 to .30 cents over the next few months. Winter time keep all the RV off the road for the most part so refining is up and demand is down right now. That could all change with the cold weather we are starting to get today across the nation. Diesel consumption could go back up. Overall the GM has done a damn good job with the truck, but for me, they still need to do something with the damn seats. Plus on the 2024, they need to give you more interior color options. I know I’m being picky but the price you pay for these trucks is ridiculous. Thanks the video.

Thanks David, Actually this video is about 2 weeks old, that fuel station is just in a prime location so it was a little more expensive. Costco has great diesel and it’s about a $1 cheaper. Yea fuel cost is something of a mystery but when they switch the diesel supply to winter blend, it does run low for a little bit. Thanks again bro 👍🏾👍🏾

Hey JB! Great video, but I have to disagree with you on the Exhaust Brake. Unless GMC changed something year over year with it, my 2022 3500 AT4 stops and uses the exhaust brake phenomenally. I tow a 43' toy hauler that weighs just shy of 17k up here on the East Coast and in the Pocono Mtns. Ive had to stop on some serious declines and it kicks in and slows down as it should. Its also held my speed and kept the trans steady on an 8% decline IIRC. And that was for a 2 mile downhill drive. All I did was press the brake a little firm and it kicked in. Ive never had an issue with it whether towing or not. Just my 2 cents.

Nice review. I’m a little surprised you got a little better mpg than the Ram. I figured the in-line 6 would naturally get a little better mpg. I could go back and forth with you on downshifts and all that but you did make a point about the 10 speed. That is a little bit of a downside to having all those ratios. Sometimes the computer won’t give you a downshift because of the rpm and speed you are running. Same thing can happen going uphill too. But you should just turn the exhaust brake off and then you’d see it does actually make a difference lol. I think at the end of the day though in this Ram vs GM debate, you can go buy a GM off the lot and go tow your nearly 15,000 pound 5th wheel as is. With the Ram you buy the truck and then turn around and buy new tires to get that good stability that you want. That’s worth mentioning in these debates about who has the better truck.

Well this trucks gearing makes a whirl of a difference compared to Ram and the extra gears just add on to what makes it better. Just wait until my next towing video with this truck, I think I will give GM the Accolades it may deserve 😜. I can't say how the 10-speed automatic reacts but on the 6-speed it's directly connected to the foot pedal as far as the engine brake goes if you hit the foot brake hard the engine will immediately downshift to a very high RPM around 4000 RPM if you got to make a quick stop works very well if you just let off the throttle it acts more like a car very little engine break just kind of keeps you coasting along slowing you down slowly hard break equals maximum engine break

Pulling about 15k with my 2022 Keystone Avalanche, from Vegas to St George, I am doing about 10.5 with my 2021 F 350. The best I get is about 11 or more going back with my trailer. It will eliminate that sway on your truck and doesn't allow body roll. Good video!

Good review. I just purchased a Chevy 3500 Dually diesel long bed. It came with the LTZ pkg that has the advanced trailering system on it. However, the dealer didn't order the $50 trailer tire pressure monitor system. I'm guessing that's just four internal TPMS with the valve stems. I have a TST brand TPMS with a monitor now and the tire pressure monitors screw on the valve stem in place of the valve stem cap. I'm trying to figure out what the part number is for the GM/Chevy trailer tire pressure monitors. They show the tire temp and pressure. The truck info system only shows the pressure. I called a couple of dealers' parts department and they didn't know for sure what the correct P/N was. Do you happen to know what the GM part number is for the trailer tire sensors?

I saw trucks towing heavy down Black Mountain in NC without exhaust brake and made the mistake stopping "to let the brakes cool" after they got too hot, next thing you see is the truck on fire.

I think the Truck is outsmarting you when it comes to the exhaust brake. Basically, the Truck does not compute that the exhaust brake is needed on flat grade. I mean when you are coming up to red light and letting off the gas, you are at very low RPMs and the Exhaust Brake is not going to work. I only engage exhaust brake when I am dealing with a grade situation. I don't see or feel the need for it when I am just driving around. I guess it is a difference in driving style. On a downhill grade, when you get the V8s RPMs up the exhaust brake works great, when you need it. And I guess you are the only person I have ever heard that likes to feel a hard shift, I personally like the smooth power flow of the Dmax and the Allison. I am going to air up my tires next time I tow, I am curious to see if I feel a difference.

You may be right, I’m just use to turning it on and allowing the truck to work it’s magic. RAM is magic in this department but I just have to adjust how I tow. I’m used to turning cruise off and letting the truck gradually slow me down then tap the brakes and watch the truck literally stop with little to no effort from me. The I6 design and 6 speed may be why the Cummins does so well with towing. 80 PSI’s did the trick for me for stability 👍🏾

After that, aired up to max psi, no problems since. Blew 3 new Michelin tires on my gooseneck hauling F450 dump truck home from DC, only 100 miles into trip. 3 more new tires, 2 days and hundreds of miles later from 65 to 80psi, no more issues. Since then the aggressiveness of the exhaust brake and downshifting has gotten progressively less aggressive. I can't say for sure what the reason is but the Tourqiness and response from the pedals both in acceleration and braking has gotten worse. Whoever is writing the tunes for GM needs to be fired! It might also be an EPA issue that has forced their hand as well.

@@ronpage101 Ask who?? I own and operate a transportation company that is running 11 hotshots and 15 class 8 semi tractor trailers so who the hell do I need to ask. Since you are showing your ignorance maybe you need to be educated. The duramax Allison combo is the best I've found for my business as for what it costs cents per mile to operate ( that includes mantiance fuel mileage and cost of vehicle) now the Ford powerstroke comes in a close 2nd by only about 4.3 cents per mile more to operate the fuel mileage is real close between the duramax and powerstroke but mantiance cost on the powerstroke makes the Ford higher to operate. The ram cummins will cost you about 13.6 cents per mile more ( the reliability the mantiance and the fuel mileage) is what makes that big of a difference. Now take that cents per mile multiple by 80000 to 100000 miles per yr per truck and then tell me how great that cumapart is or how much extra money your spending that adds up to sizeable amount of money if you can count that high because of your ignorance. Now as for class 8 semi the cummins n14 and the isx both will cost more for mantiance and the isx is very unreliable plus the fuel mileage is terrible mantiance cost on the n14 is not as bad as the isx but isx is unbelievable on mantiance cost per mile. Stay with detroit diesel or caterpillar. If talking new trucks go with detroit or paccar both are cheaper on cents per mile to operate . But each his own buy what you want in what color you want it's your money but as for my business the less money I spend on operating costs the more money me and my drivers make plus I haven't had one driver complain about driving an chevy ltz option out truck with the duramax Allison combo nor have I had one complain about driving a classic xl freightliner 379exhd peterbilt or w900l kenworth running detroits and caterpillar engines. So believe what you want but quit showing your ignorance and actually put a calculator or pencil and paper or maybe you need to take your shoes off to use you toes to count that high and figure out the cost per mile to operate that truck whatever brand it is. Thats what people do that operate a business using all sorts of equipment including trucks. Your there to provide a service and make money not just to drive a truck just because it has this or that motor. But like I said to each his or her own it's your money buy what you want but don't tell me or call me ignorant when apparently you don't have a clue what you are talking about or your so ignorant you don't know how to f------ count.

From the n14 to the isx to the small ones in the ram trucks but where I'm from and live this is green detroit and yellow cat country. I've tried the ram cummins and Ford powerstroke on the hotshot side of my business neither one of them has the dependability reliability and cost per mile to operate in real world settings as the duramax Allison combo wish they did I can buy ram cummins a hell of alot cheaper then a duramax Allison but if it want last as long and cost more to operate your not saving anything your losing money in mantiance and down time.
