I run my '24 F550 about 62 mph. Have the max suspension (19,500) available from Ford with the 4.30. Definitely rides better now that aluminum flatbed is on it. Truck now weighs about 10,000 lbs with both tanks full and me in it. I could care less about 0-60 time. We are putting a camper on the truck for full-time travel. Total weight of truck and camper will be just over 18,000 lbs. So far, 4,500 miles, we love the truck. We are going with the Buckstop treatment and Liquid Spring suspension. So once those 43' tires are on the truck, it will be even more slow. i will leave the 0-60 times concern with the "kids". We are way beyond those concerns - LOL! Probably a good thing, don't you think?

Great test! Did not expect the 4.30 to be slower. Looks like if you tow within max tow range you have to live with a extra stiff ride, and slower acceleration.

If you’re towing RVs most will go with a Regular 350 drw with 355 for mpg The 4.30s is good for lugging in the mountains & keeping airflow in the heat of summer. They derate them for companies so their employees aren’t romping around & longevity of the transmission. Pd diesel did a review with a srw 350 for hotshot & he nailed every point

I think if I were to hot shot I’d stay in the 3500 truck realm. Living and working on I75 I see a lot of hot shot and RV transports. I don’t see a lot of 5500s.

95% of drivers will be happier in an F-350. We’ve had one for almost a year and never felt the need for anything bigger. GCWR is 40k, so that means about a 31k trailer with 5k of pin weight. Almost nobody pulls more weight than that.

@7:55 🧐 I do not know about exhaust breaks "helping out the DPF", but I am confident driving with it activated is goung to rob you of fuel mileage.

Im lower hp trucks u always want a lower gear for towing. A lower gear truck with say 400hp vs taller gear truck at 450hp, the 400hp truck with lower gear is most likely gonna pass the 450hp taller ratio up the hill at 3/4 way up the hill, and its gonna use less fuel cause its actually gonna pull the hill in a higher gear and lower rpm, where the taller gear truck is gonna down shift and be screaming at redline cause it just doesn't have the gear and power to pull it in the higher gear. Having 4 dump trucks, same motor and same trans but 2 have 4.10s and 2 have 4.30s, the 4.30s use less fuel and out pull the 4.10 trucks in hilly situations. On flat ground, the 4.10 trucks get 1mpg better at most! Usually around .5 mpg better

There's not that much difference between those two gear ratios. I owned a truck with 3.73 and my new one has 4:10 and could hardly tell a difference.

GM advertises 35,000 tow capacity when properly equipped from a 3500 dually. Does GM 3500 tow more than Ford 550's?

You’re falling for the Ford marketing JB with that 4.30. As you demonstrated in this test there’s a negligible difference between the two rear gears and yet Ford is significantly increasing the towing capacity of the 4.30. It’s all Ford marketing BS. The trucks have the same GVWR correct? So the only change is an increased GCWR. Edit* the max tow has a 1500 pound higher GVWR I see. So that’s almost certainly to allow for the extra tongue weight required for the higher tow capacity. But still, you got to believe your lying eyes and ears on this one JB and use the results you got. Also I feel like I deserve to point out that the 4.10 was a little quicker lol. I told you a shorter rear gear doesn’t automatically result in quicker acceleration. I will say I think with the 10 speeds the 4.10 gear might be the sweet spot. As compared to a 3.73, you will still be in the same transmission gears at most speed conditions (highway, slow speed, etc) all but at a slightly higher rpm which would give you a little bit more power.

I guess it’s bothers me that you’re telling guys to buy a 85k + truck with max tow in an industry that you’re only mildly informed on. The cutting edge guys out here making money in Hot Shot and Trucking understand the market. We know how, where, & when to adjust. The #1 thing you can always change is fuel savings. You want to be lite, nimble, & efficient. I monitor rates every single day and most of the day also. Lanes and best areas to go and worst area to have to Dead Head out of. Hauling Heavy does not pay better and costs more. Your making a mistake if you get into Hot Shot to haul heavy. You are way better off hauling lite and low….

If I wasn't going to be fully loaded or towing all the time. I would go with the lighter duty. If it was for heavy towing all the time. Spend the extra money. Me. I like the lower trim levels with more towing capabilities. I'm not a big fan if all the crap. A truck should be just to get the job done. All of this extra crap annoys me.

Here’s the thing, I made the mistake your selling. I bought a 21 Ram 5500 Cab & Chassis. Apportioned at 54’k and was Hot Shot around the country hauling heavy. Fuel mileage was killing me. Meanwhile my buddy was killing it with a Ram 2500 and a 35’ goose neck running lite loads. RV hauling pays crap. Hauling heavy Hot Shot pays crap. But I’ve you haul lite with partial loads you can do great in Hot Shot. That’s why what you selling doesn’t make sense. You need real world experience when you’re influencing people. I’ve got 1.5 million miles safe miles out here trucking…

Problem with the 2500 though, rear axle weight rating. Always going to be overweight and moving freight to the back of the trailer. Huge downside. Always depends on your customer base, too.

These trucks are built for ambulance, tow truck, dump truck, welder trucks…. ie/ cab and chassis. If you actually start around the country trying to make a living as a Hot Shot, especially with today Spot Market rate you will so find out how running LTL and lite loads and better highway gears is a much better platform to make any kind of living. ie- 3.73. Remember you have to Dead head around for loads in the real world of trucking. Pulling 35K across country with weather, mountains, tarps, you lucky to get 5 mpg… You don’t have to tow heavy in Hot Shot. You need to understand the Market when giving this advice. 1 mpg in 100,000 miles is about 14,000k in savings. But don’t take it from me. I’ve only been doing this 14 years. 😂. Better of with an old tractor and a place to sleep…
