Awesome Vid. I appreciate the honesty and showing everybody first hand knowledge with the large pick up trucks. I’ll add one thing based on my experience. I live in Maine. Inspection stickers are required every year. If your 3500 is a daily driver under 10,000 lbs then your inspection will cost 12.50 IF you go above the 10,000 lbs then your inspection is 60.00 bucks. I do know a few that own the large pick ups that don’t work them. Just a daily driver. Couldn’t really wrap my head around that.

The biggest drawback for driving a dually is the constant shower of panties. Ram needs to do something about that, because the regular windshield wipers don’t really help much.

Nobody in their right mind should be looking for that parking stall up in the front row of Walmart. That’s why they make a back row where all the trucks and campers park overnight. Even with my 4 door Chevy Duramax with a long bed and single rear drive it always gets the back row.

I totally agree with you on parking spaces gotten smaller especially in CA. I don’t live there but was there for my business and had to squeeze my dually between two smaller cars. The owner of my left side came out and she was really pissed off asking me if I really had to drive such a big vehicle. @larryarmstrong6973
@larryarmstrong6973 2 жыл бұрын
@Jonathan Tripp My/ our dually isn't our daily driver. In fact it's been 30+ years since I've had a pickup as a daily driver so we don't take it to the shopping mall. Lowes maybe but not Wally world. It's for towing and that's pretty much it. It has a solid feel to it. I don't drive it in the winter because there's no reason to. We live in Montana and it's usually too cold to go camping anyway so it sits in the shop all winter. I use my VW Jetta to do all my chasing around. I like getting 35-40 mpg in it. Makes up for the 10mpg we get with the dually when we're towing our 33.5' 5th wheel with our 1000RZR behind it. The aluminum Hillsboro flatbed, in my opinion is the only way to go when towing a 5th wheel. Love it and that's why, even though we really don't need a dually any more, this pickup is perfect for us. We like the long wheel base of the crew cab and the extra seat for putting stuff in for the trip. And we get the looks when we drive in. It's a sharp looking rig.

I've towed for over 40 years with a 2500 SRW, 3500 SRW, and my current 3500 DRW. My 2013 Big Horn 5th wheel weights 15,500 lbs. My last truck was a 3500 SRW and would get a little ass shack passing semis or when the crosswinds picked up. The dually tracks 100% better. I have the OEM self leveling rear air bags and this truck rides smoother empty and loaded than any 2500 and 3500 on the market. My friends drive all the makes and sizes and I have driven them all. They have also driven my 3500. All 9 of them agree that the Ram OEM air bagged truck is the smoothest ride them all. And the biggest benefit is it automatically keeps the rear at the set height, there is no sag.

Great honest review. I have a Dually simply because it gives me options for towing (goose neck, 5th wheel, truck camper, bumper pull, hot shotting, etc) and yes it cost more and yes I drive a Jeep Rubicon as a daily, but my dually is the last truck I will ever buy. Made the mistake of trading my 2016 Dually for a new 1500 and realized that despite how nice it was, it limited my options and I now had a car, not a truck. Traded back and have a 20 Dually. Probably one of only 3 or 4 vehicles that I have had that I smile every time I look at it. Nothing better.

Nowadays it’s crazy because people are buying up the 2500’s loaded as fashion pieces so they’re driving the 2500 prices up way higher than the 3500 duallys. I’ve seen it with my own eyes.

Having towed the same 5th wheel up the same route with a Ram 3500 single, and a nearly identical Ram 3500 Dually- I arrive much less fatigued driving the dually. The SRW handled it fine, but the dually is much more planted, stable and relaxing. Then I got a big 5th wheel that would have overloaded the tires/axle rating of the single rear wheel.

I daily drive my dually. I find it easier to park than my SRW truck as you can see the sides of the outer tires, as long as you keep them inside the lines your good to go. Also my dually is cheaper to insure than my SRW was, insurance said it’s cause of all the claims they get from people off-road damaging their SRW’s, people don’t usually take dually’s 4x4ing. Also I find squishy cars get out of my way more cause they are intimidated by the size. Makes my job easier.

A good reason to buy an electric power washer and use it at home. The only time I've taken a vehicle to a car wash was after I washed my wife's brand new Jeep Grand Cherokee with the well water. Great points for and against. I tow a Gooseneck enclosed car trailer as well as a 40' pintle 3 axle boat trailer. Currently my tow vehicle is a Silverado 2500hd 6.0 4x4 extra cab short bed. Maneuverability is great, plenty of power to pull whatever is attached to the back. Always able to get out of loose pack, sand, dirt, mud, while towing. Have also had Duallys, both 4x4 and 2wd. When the trailer wants to "take over", boy is it nice to have that " big a.." out back to set it straight. But, I'm gonna be real, in the snow, mud, or not so "Terra Firma", contrary to what you would think, dually will bury their rears quickly. A few instances actually forced me to remove the outer wheels I order to get out of trouble without disconnecting. To anyone that is really gonna daily drive a full size beast that isn't towing every day, spending 100,000.00 for an uncomfortable ride isn't sensible. If you're pulling trailers regularly, longer distances, traveling frequently, well maybe. But driving locally, mostly dealing with congestion, small parking spaces narrow streets, Teslas, Prius's, Ricky racers, motorcycles, kids on bikes and skateboards, and pedestrians, but need a full size truck for every day use, stick to a single. Don't feel like your less of a man, just smarter! I actually wish there were still S-10s, Toyota SR5s, Datsun(Nissan), small trucks. They really make even more sense now than they did back then, given, congestion and gas prices. GM actually had a fleet service only S-10 that was powered by the EV-1 drive system which the general public couldn't have, which held the EV record at Pikes Peak until recently. That was set in the early nineties. Okay, I'm old and rambling.

Good points, all. I had no idea about increased cost of registration. Increased insurance makes sense to me. I’m currently in an EB Chevy Camper van, which is also a beast to park. I was dreaming of a dually and a Big Foot truck camper, which would increase total length due to camper hangover. I’ve put that dream on hold for a while since production of both trucks and truck campers is down and prices are way up. Thanks for the objective approach to owning a dually! ✌🏼

Minor concerns for the capability and stability of a dually. I’ve hand nothing but duallys for 16 years and wouldn’t have anything else. I told my brother in law that he needed to sell his srw Ram 2500 that he tows his huge fifth wheel with and buy a dually, he always said he didn’t need it. That was until he had a blow out on the rear and about flipped it. He now has a 21 Ram 3500 dually and said he regrets not getting one years ago.

Excellent video but I would strongly suggest - it depends. A huge advantage of the dually is two-fold: 1) Weight that you can tow 2) stability. I have towed with an SRW & DRW and I will never go back to a single axle. Moreover, I can get a 4.10 Rear Gear -which runs through the mountains that I do with my 42ft 5th wheel, I am in the center lane all the way up the mountain. - never get off 70MPH - Stability is the biggest reason for me truthfully.

Bought a 2020 RAM 3500 dually last year. Agree with the drawbacks you mention, but still very happy with the truck and its performance. Pulls our Keystone Outback (35 feet hitch to bumper) home with no worries. Looking forward to replacing that rig with a fifth wheel one day and really putting the dually’s to their true use. One advantage to parking a dually in many parking lots I think should not be overlooked is the nice, long walk to and from the stores once I find a parking spot I fit into! Very relaxing!

There is one other disadvantage to having a dually that most people don't realize because they never tow boats. But having four rear wheels on a slippery boat ramp actually works against you because each tire has the load spread out more - each tire presses down on the pavement less. As a result, the dually will struggle to maintain traction when a single rear wheel truck will do much better under those circumstances. For this reason, I always install a locker in the rear axle if it doesn't already have posi because I'm going to the lake a lot. That being said, this is not enough to sway me from owning a dually. To my mind, the advantages of a dually completely outweigh the disadvantages. It's a truck - a REAL truck built to do REAL work.

After having driven trucks which are 120' long and over width, driving a dually for me is like driving a little car. But I don't drive mine around town as my daily driver. Since then, it has been converted to SRW as I don't tow heavy at all with my truck. Sad part of my Ram Megacab is that it only has a 10500lb GVWR for a dually in 2006 but that may have been to allow for 15klb towing without a CDL.

Missed the true draw back of the dually, they hydroplane very easy and in the winter they cut another grove in the snow and always feel loose unless you put heavy weight in the rear then it's almost fun cause it's so planted to the road, I would only consider a dually if I had a flatbed on my truck, and if you ever do that you won't ever want to go back to a single rear wheel truck
@larryarmstrong6973
@larryarmstrong6973 2 жыл бұрын
That's me. You nailed it on the head. I bought our dually for that very reason, to put a flatbed on it. The bed has so much room. We have the crew cab but use ours to pull our 5th wheel camper. Having a flatbed makes so much sense It is so stabile. Don't use it much in the winter so driving in the snow isn't a problem for us. Having a flatbed to pull a 5th wheel is the only way to go.

I have a Dodge ram 3500 dually drive it everyday everywhere my dad has a ram 3500 dually all I'm going to tell you is if you know how to drive it and you know how to park it you'll be fine if you're not good at driving a big vehicle then it's probably not for you all I would say is he just needs a 3500 single wheel for what he wants to do otherwise if he pulled the bed off and put a single wheel bed on it and put regular single tires on the back of this dually it would be what he wants and it would still be cheaper to do that as it would to be get rid of the truck cuz the trucks are too expensive

The biggest drawback I have is airing down and back up for camoing in the sand. I just went on a four hour road trip with my 5th wheel and I loved the power and stability of my dually. Passing trucks you dont feel it going down the fwy. I do not quite understand the confidence, to me the dually is so much of a better towing experience, much more relaxing and focusing on the road rather than the load.

Good video. I have been driving a dually since 1990. From gas with manual trans. To my ram 3500 4x4 space shuttle today. You must combine common sense with towing or bad things happen. The One Other Thing That You Didn't Cover Is You Need Front Wheel ( 4× ) Axle Drive If You Will Be On Any Other Surface Regularly Than A Paved (Cement/Asphalt) Surface . Love my ram 3500 dually. You're mostly spot on. It all boils down to the driver and what you're willing to deal with. I live IN Chicago. Not the burbs. Narrow streets are one of my biggest issues. Manageable but can be a pain. Parking is somewhat of a problem but again, patiently manageable. My absolute biggest issue is winter. Front tires blaze a trail and the rear wheels blaze their own. Rear end is squirrelly. Love the dry ground stability but 4 wheels are better than 6 in the winter.

Please note your comment about insurance is incorrect. A privately registered dually is not blindly treated as a commercial vehicle by insurance. Rates are based on a matrix of factors. Possibly you are confusing wrapped in coverage on your camper, which many do (but may be insufficient for higher end campers and full-time coverage). Beyond what I know behind the scenes, I own a RAM 3500 CC LB 4wd Cummins/AISIN DRW and a RAM 1500 CC LB 4wd Hemi SRW, about the same yearly mileage, full coverage, both same model years and my dually is actually $63 less per 6 mos (just renewed this week). Nevermind it cost me a lot more! 🤣Nevertheless, an SRW cannot handle our 5er's pin weight. DRWs are not for everyone, but having the right tool for the job is right for everyone.

I had a 2018 CCSB and went to a 2020 3500 DRW CCLB (both 4x4) and I love it. I always parked away from everyone else and usually back up into most spaces. My 2500 felt like it rode worse even with the coil springs out back. I like having more bed space and a more stable ride. My mpg for my 2018 was like 16mpg for its lifetime and so far the dually has averaged 16.1mpg. I miss not having to be so selective about parking but other than that I’m happy with my decision

Definitely respect your commentary on duallies, but its exactly why I spent a couple bucks more and got an f450. My insurance went up 6 bucks a month from an f150, non commercial, I can get through any drive thru, and can do a u turn in a tiny parking lot. It's astonishing how one can turn literally on a dime in these things.

I appreciate this commentary. I just ordered a 2022 Ram 3500 CCLB 4X4 6.7HO SRW and was on the fence about a dually. I was thinking about changing the order, but it was already assigned a VIN. This video and the comments have helped me accept that I'm getting a SRW lol. Here where we live in rural MT, many of the roads aren't paved, and all the roads are covered to some degree in snow and ice for at least 4-5 months. I do a fair amout of off road driving. I do tow regularly, enclosed trailers, horse trailer, and a 28ft camper - all bumper pull - but they're well within the capabilities of what I spec'd. I've had heavy equipment in the past, and I suppose I wanted the capability to haul heavy if I needed it. Also, a truck like this is just as much a piece of equipment to me as it is a daily driver, and I like to put equipment to work lol. A DRW has the potential for a better return than a SRW. There certainly are operating costs that don't make sense to float unless you're doing it for a living, vs just hauling as a side hustle and taking what loads you're capable of. My primary business is as a carpenter/general contractor, so a SRW suits my needs very well. The dually is beautiful beast though lol... I guess it's a needs vs wants thing lol. Thanks again
@fredv7487
@fredv7487 2 жыл бұрын
Your points are valid to an extent. The problem I see is that the dually is way more stable then the single wheel. And only looking at your convenience should not calculate into safety. So when you blow a tire or your load shifts and your trailer begins to wag tell us how great it is that you can park in the front row at Walmart. Having way to much truck is far better then not having enough.

Great video. My next truck is going to be a dually. So you didn’t change my mind. Two things you mentioned that I did not consider though were the GVWR and registration. If you are buying new trailer, most of them will de-rate trailer to 12k to stay under GCWR. Also… in FL you want to register your truck at the weight with trailer combined… so 26k $$$! You will get a ticket
@wc5050
@wc5050 2 жыл бұрын
If you are towing recreationally or personal use the 26k doesn't matter especially in farming, however you do have to stay within the trucks capabilities. GVWR 19-21 Ram DRW approx. 14k most weigh in around 9500lbs, most 40' + fifth wheels weigh in at 12-15k dry weight + 2-3k in contents usually shoots the 26k in the foot but still legal since its recreational or personnel use.

Don't presently do any towing, but that could change. Don't haul weekly, and often not monthly. I just want the ability to handle anything life can throw at me, and to own a diesel for long term, mileage, & power. I was gonna do a CC SRW till I started looking at a Mega, and that duelly Mega is just sexy AF!
