As a young boy, I walked through that graveyard everyday on my way to school: Yosemite Elementary.

My uncle lived in the valley on and off between there and San Francisco, working for the NPS as a purchasing agent starting back in the early 1950's (before I was born). Many trips as a child, I was brought there by my parents and roamed the valley at will. In one trip, he arranged for us to stay in the Rangers' Club; such wonderful architecture. A later trip, he was able to get Ansel Adams to allow us to stay in his little house behind the gallery as he was friends with Ansel and Virginia; I was a bit too young at the time to realize what an amazing treat and privilege that was. His last stint in the valley, he lived in government housing not far from the graveyard and it was one of my 'haunts.' Years later, from 1979 through 1984, I lived in the valley, working for the concessionaire and moved up to retail management and had wonderful housing in a couple of cabins (no longer there) in Curry Village. While working there, I met one of my best friends from the Los Angeles area who turned out to be a descendant of James Hutchings (as well as having being adopted by one of the late cast members of the "Batman" TV series). My first early spring in the valley, business was slow and I was required to work in the Yosemite Village grocery store's attached gift shop; at first, I felt demeaned, given my usual position. One day I spied an elderly gentleman stroll in the back door... Ansel Adams on his last trip to the valley; he had come to see the dogwoods flowering one last time. He was extremely gracious. I introduced myself and reminded him of my uncle who he readily remembered; I thanked him for allowing my family, as a child, to stay in his house and we chatted for about 20 or so minutes. I feel I was also privileged to see the fire-falls before they were discontinued; at first, I was dismayed upon their demise. Looking back, though, the Curry meadows were trampled unmercifully as folk gathered there to watch them. For those almost 5 years, I was privileged to be able to rock climb, hike, trail run, backpack, cross country ski, ski mountaineer and travel in the back-country; I have such wonderful memories of those times, the places in the valley and throughout the park as well as the unusual characters I met! I was also privileged (ordered to by upper management) to attend (outside, of course) when Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip attended Sunday services in the chapel; I recall being a bit miffed as it was my day off and I would rather have spent it rock climbing; looking back though, fate dealt me a good hand having to attend! At the time, I was more impressed by all the secret service agents around in their suits, ear pieces and Uzis! Good times!

Saw the fire fall in 1967, I was watching one direction that I was sure was correct and looked around and everyone else was looking a different direction so I looked too and there it was. Beautiful, even 53 years ago.

My Great-Grandfather’s sister, Barbara McCauley, was the wife of Jim McCauley. Just outside of Coulterville, there is a place called Bower Cave, now owned by the U.S. Forest Service. It was a tourist attraction and stop on the first road into Yosemite Valley, it was called the Bower Cave Hotel. It was the site of a killing in January of 1863 by my Second Great-Grandmother of her abusive husband.

Love Yosemite! My final request is to have my ashes spread on the valley floor. I’m sure I’m not the first nor will I be the last. Thank you!

I have been to this amazing valley many times...climbing Half Dome and being married at the Chapel in the meadow. Never been to the cemetery but always wanted to pay my respects ! Thank you Jeff and Sarah for a lovely visit back to my favorite place. Now I can say I have been to the cemetery ! Best way to start my day is with a History Hunter video !! Loved the bird seed ! ❤❤

Good afternoon Jeff and Sarah, WOW! From all of California, there's two places my wife and I enjoy visiting; Monterey/Pacific Grove and, Yosemite National Park. We could spend weeks or months in either place if we were free from other obligations. We've visited the cemetery there numerous times and at first, I was shocked at the number of children's graves then thought of the hardships that had to be terrible for everyone especially, the children. Thanks for sharing another great and informative video with us. I cannot fathom the four day trip from the Central Valley to Yosemite when it takes us maybe two hours of leisure driving. Please tell Sarah to stay as she is, you two make a great team. Stan in Ceres

I Love the Yosemite Cemetery. I would wear my babies in carriers walking through there as Scott climbed the nose of El Cap, the face of Half Dome or some other craziness. It left me with tons of time to explore the valley for all its history. :) Thank you for showing this. Brings back memories.

It was winter, and we got snowed in. All of us, in one large cabin, couldn't go outside, so saw NOTHING...It's likely I'll never return, so your visit today was meaningful.---And, very enjoyable...the two of you!

Been having week long family camping gatherings (grandparent's, aunt's, uncle's) in Yosemite Valley for over 50 year's. Sometimes go skiing in winter. I never knew there was a cemetery there. Thanks my friend for the history lesson will visit on this year's trip and pay my respect's.

Beautiful! I was there just a few days before ya'll. It's my favorite destination for a day ride on my motorcycle. And I've always wondered about that cabin down in the Foresta valley. The cemetery I never knew about in all my visits. I'll check it out next time. And one of the names in the cemetery, Hutchins, is probably who Lodi, California named one of the streets that I travel on daily. Again, beautiful coverage and history presentation. 🏍💨

I have wondered about this burial place since first discovery of it. Especially since there’s a Cavagnaro buried there. My grandmother’s family are Cavagnaro’s and they owned and operated a store in the town of Camanche, now under Lake Camanche

James Savage is buried at Hensley Lake outside of Raymond CA. He was moved several times before being laid to rest there beneath an Italian marble obelisk.

Interesting tidbit. A few weeks ago, while watching a random KZfaq travel video of Scotland, in the background of a scene, I saw a Muir conservation society sign. I can't remember the exact name of the society, but I checked it out online and it was for John Muir.

I’ve been to Yosemite several times in my life but never saw the cemetery. What I remember most is the smell of pine needles. Thank you for sharing all the history behind Yosemite! You both are a blessing! 😌

When I was about 7 we camped one year at Yosemite. I remember the fire falls. They were so beautiful. I'm so glad I got to see them.

So many great stories come out of that graveyard. It’s a good way to dig up the history of Yosemite. I’ve never heard anything about the graves at Yosemite. Next time I go I’m going to visit the graves. Thank You guys.

thanks for a wonderful informative video on the lives of these Yosemite pioneers. often you wander through a cemetery and see names , and only imagine their lives and what they looked like. Your video brought all of this to life , their pictures and their personal history . alot of time went into presenting this , so I thank you so much for this.

I remember seeing the cemetery when I was a kid coming through there in 1968. Thanks Jeff and Sarah for showing us this cemetery. I think the best way to climb halfdome rock is to hitch a ride on one of the president's helicopters and just have them drop you off up there. Jeff did you notice that that black bear had a collar around it's neck; it looks like someone is tracking it.

Glad I found you on here. I love history and visiting cemeteries and lots of people think I am weird. I have loved visiting old cemeteries and reading head stones. One the of items on my bucket list is to visit Normandy Beach and spend the day walking among our Heroes.

The birdseed bandit always strikes twice.... ha, ha. Sarah has a good poker face. "Who, me, birdseed?" I was only an hour drive from the Yosemite front gate when I lived in Fresno and another half hour to the valley. Thanks for the history lesson. I saw a Lynx in the valley once and it didn't stick around for long. No time to get a photo.

I'm born and raised in CA, now live in the gold country of CA, and have never been to Yosemite. Have been over the Tioga Pass, twice, but never made it into Yosemite. Will have to do it soon. Again, another great adventure with you two. Sarah, I love the critters too.

Hi Jeff and Sarah! Cant tell you how many times we have been to Yosemite and never seen the cemetery, and my youngest used to work in the park valley too. Wife and I were out in Modesto/Manteca last week. Each time we drove past the Mossdale bridge, we thought of of your video. I now have my oldest son hooked on your videos! Nice job on Mothers Day video. Was very touching, we all had tears in our eyes as we have been there. Cant wait for Sunday video!

I just watched this and at the beginning you were in Foresta. I spent many weekends in a cabin in Foresta. We use to take the Jeep on all the fire roads and back road into the park. The cabin/house was in my friends family for a few generations until the park service took it like they did to the family who owned the meadow you were in.

That was a wonderful video. I am 1/8th Me-Wuk. I was told that Me-wuk settled the area before the white man. I recall my father telling me that my Grandmother received a check for $115.00 from the Government for her share of the purchase of the Tuolomne and parts of Yosemite.
