I was born and raised in Manteca California for 40 years. My mom and sister and father in law are buried in that very cemetery

My 3rd great-grandfather actually worked at Castle Elementary, back when the Principal was Mr. Patrick Duffy himself.

I looked up Olive on Family Search to see if I am related to her. Olive Louella Bailey Taylor is my 11th cousin twice removed. Our common ancestor died in 1550 and 1572.

Horrible, the father should've discipline his son at home there for he wouldn't been misbehaving in school....it's nothing different in this day and age , parents need to be parents children aren't born with instruction we are our childrens first teachers RIP Olive Taylor you didn't deserve this Thank you for sharing Jeff & Sarah

John Coumas, the child the teacher slapped, died in 1940 at the age of 15. John had two other siblings who both died in their infancy. I wouldn’t be surprised Mrs. Coumas was suffering from severe depression after losing two of her children as infants. That could be because the reason why she was placed in a mental hospital. Anyway, there was no information about the death and burial of Thomas R. Coumas. I’m assuming he returned to Greece and lived the rest of his life there.

I have wanted to get my hands on that old house for years and restore it! What an interesting story about the school shooting.

For my job I've looked at thousands of houses and have seen lots of abandoned beautiful homes. For each of them there was a day when somebody lived there, then the next day nobody did ever again. Makes you wonder what happened. Thanks , Jeff for another fascinating story.

What a cool old house on French Camp Road! Very spooky! Lots of stories that old house could tell. What a shock, back in 1932, to have a school teacher shot and killed for attempting to discipline a student. Those kids father did them no favors by doing this. I wonder what became of them and what their lives were like after this event took place. And with their mom being in an asylum, they basically lost both parents at a young age. I have to wonder if the reason behind the mom being in a mental institution could be due to some issues she had with her husband, and possibly his controlling personality? We have to remember that our actions, whether positive or negative, can impact the lives of many other people. Thank you for telling this story and for finding the grave of the teacher who's life was taken just trying to keep her students in line. Unfortunately, that's becoming commonplace in today's world. 😢

Very strange ruling. I've never heard of double jeopardy being invoked in connection with a criminal trial in another country. I need to research this.

Sounds as if the father should have been locked up in Stocktons insane asylum too! No wonder why the children acted the way they did for them it was probably normal behavior. Do you know what ever became of his wife and children?Thank you Jeff for another great history story! Also my cousin Don is buried in that same cemetery! I did find the young boy John only lived to be 15 and died in 1940. He is buried in Stocktons rural cemetery and the mother lived to be 85 is buried in Lodi at Cherokee Memorial same cemetery as my grandparents. All of this tragedy caused by one man’s anger. Sad and tragic changing so many peoples future.

Thanks for the peek inside, yes, I still love it/want it! I'm curious, did you live in the area? You said you drove past the house in the 70s when you were a teen. I actually graduated from Escalon High in '73. I love all the history you teach, my favorite subject in High School (it helped having the best teachers in the area) and I still have an urge to read or watch anything history. Hi Jeff, we have talked a few times before and I've been following your channel joyously for years. I too have had questions about the old house at the end of your video that I have not been able to satisfy. Seeing it again in your video has made me redouble my efforts. I checked all of my history books in the local area from 1879 on and can't find anything on the house. There is the site of a small town called Atlanta about a mile and a half SE but that's it. I have feelers out to resources that have been able to help me with head scratchers like this in the past and if I get anything back i'll let you know. I also have more information on the old school if you want from the book San Joaquin County's Public Schools 1852 to 1990. You may already have it, it's kind of hard to find and expensive when you do. Thanks for all you and Sarah do.

When I was in School, we got paddle by the Teachers, I remember in Elementary School for every spelling word that you missed the Teacher would give you 1 paddle on your hand, miss 3 words and get 3 paddles.

What a sad story... a kid who acts out to his teacher, gets disciplined, then the child's father shoots the teacher... and others. Very sad. Studies have found that parents who stand up for their child's bad behavior because of the simple fact of discipline, the child's chances of going to jail or prison is 90% Great video... I used to drive past that cemetery in French Camp all the time, going between Turlock and Stockton. I'll bet that old house was beautiful in its day. Thanks for giving us a peek inside. Things like that intrigue me.

Such a sad story about the teacher being killed. If the one child threw his lunch on the floor I can imagine other things he did. I wonder if the mothers mental health was inherited by the son. That old house looked like it was a nice home back in the day. Would love to see pictures of it back then. After building homes in the past with my husband I appreciate the wood detail on the fireplaces. Love the wood inserts in the windows. Too bad no one restored it. Not sure if it could be restored in the condition it is currently in.

husband speaking age 81 - My mother, born in 1915 is Seattle, Wash. grew up in Edmonds, Wash. She told me that her teacher in grade school would whack boys hands with the big ruler and some times use the edge with the metal strip on the back of their hands causing them to bleed. Try that today, look cross and the parents will try to sue. I was in Jr. High in the late 50's when corporal punishment was nearing its end. I never got hit, but was worried a few times.

That is a Beautiful home. It’s sad that people let it get in that condition 😢.

Great show I used to live in Manteca for years I was about 14 or more years. My grandma and grandpa live there in the graveyard in Manteca. Used to swim by the troff.

Wow, what a story! I can't help to think what would have been like living in the house for those kids, probably, a living hell perhaps. Sadly, it took more people, tragically, along for the ride. The big house at the end, it is beautiful, is t it a mansion? A jewel in the middle of nowhere! Thanks again Jeff for a great story.

It's sad to see old buildings falling apart like that 😢. If it would have been maintained, during the decades, it would probably have been beautiful. And yes, people should not lose their lives while doing their jobs, but unfortunately, it happens way too often 😢.
