Alan Ross Reviews Top Picks:
Pound for pound world champion:
Soundcore Motion Boom: geni.us/motionboom
Amazingly deep bass to 40hz for its size and price.
For a leaner more agile sound with seven more deep bass for the same price try the Mifa Wildbox
Still worth a look:
My former world champ the Soundcore Motion Plus can still offer great clarity.
geni.us/soundcoremotionplus
£50 champion:
Great bass for its size, Soundcore Boost: geni.us/soundcoreboost
A little bigger but a decent listen for full body sound at a decent price ($50) BOGASING M4 (some distortion issues): geni.us/bogasingm4
Bass Heavy Speakers:
Harman Kardon Go+ (mid and upper bass heavy but with decent balance): Play geni.us/goplay
Onyx Studio 6 (warmer than the 7, maybe too bass heavy in balance): geni.us/onyxstudio6
Bag of Riddim 2: not much deep bass but dollops of mid and upper bass help to give a warm and open sound. A good fun listen but not so accurate in reproduction. geni.us/bagofriddim
Hi End Picks
Minirig mk3 2.2 system: geni.us/minirigmk3
Great for portable low deep kick: Onyx Studio 6 (more bass than Onyx 7): geni.us/onyxstudio6
Monitor Like openess and neutrality but lacks deep bass Audio Pro C3: geni.us/audioproc3
Very Deep bass (40hz) but lacks clear mids and highs JBL Boombox 2: geni.us/jblboombox2
Travel Speakers:
Marshall Stockwell 2: geni.us/stockwell2
offers a decent immersive sound with full and tight bass. Beware though it does not go very loud
JBL Charge 5: geni.us/jblcharge5
Only mono but has a very clear and dynamic sound at low volumes and can go reasonably loud but will become a little screechy over 80%.
Bose Soundlink Flex: geni.us/bosesoundlinkflex good bass heavy sound for its compact travel friendly size.
Denon 250bt, no longer made but sets the standard for size/quality ratio for travel (battery drain issues)
JBL Flip 6: geni.us/jblflip6 louder than the Bose Soundlink Flex and has better highs (though too much, bit harsh) but not as full sounding as the Flex.
Beosound A1 1st gen: sounds better than 2nd gen and goes louder but has app, connectivity and battery issues. Very deep bass for small size and clearer than the Bose Flex. geni.us/a1gen1
Best Mini/Micro Options:
Bose Soundlink Micro (warm): geni.us/bosesoundlinkmicro
Tribit Stormbox Micro 2 (clinical): geni.us/tribitmicro2
Also consider Beosound A1 1st gen (more HiFi). geni.us/a1gen1
Minirig Mini 2: geni.us/minirigmini2
Worth a Look:
W-King T9: geni.us/wkingt9
The T9 is a reasonably loud and balanced party speaker with a big bright detailed sound.
Budget Loud Boombox: no clear winner but my pick for fun outside listen would be:
W-King X10-1 for form factor and loudness geni.us/wkingx10
W-King D9 for bass with a little smoother signature: geni.us/wkingd9
Tribit Xsound Mega: medium sized mono speaker with fun bass and light show. geni.us/xsoundmega
JBL Boombox 2 or Onyx Studio 7 :)

Hi there! I have an Onyx 7 buyed now and on the box it has a GG before serial number. Should I concern with this? Are there different versions with differences in sound in Onyx 7, like JBL(I heard on your channel about TL, GG, etc versions in JBL portable speakers)? I tested the Onyx 7 after I pressed the Bluetooth and minus buttons for 10 seconds, and the sound becomes incredbily bright, with almost no bass. What can you say about this? Thank you, and I appreciate your work.

I have an onyx studio 5(the best one) and If you hold the 2 buttons all the way to the left in for 10 seconds on the onyx it will cut some bass out but allows it a significant more output volume.😁😁😁😁😁no one is talking about this. Love the channel!!!!!!!! Please look into this and let’s see some video redos. Thanks man! Cheers!

i dont see the point in cutting the bass to be honest, bass is the whole point of this speaker. its useful to know though.

@@alanrossreviews I agree about the bass. However if you max the volume with the bass on and then switch it the bass is still powerful and the speaker is significantly louder. Great for outdoor use or battling a jbl boombox. It will keep up early on and as you increase the volume the jbl starts pulling away. This bass cut feature will allow it to hold its own better. At least try it and let me know your findings. I love the bass of this speaker. Cheers!

I guess it shouldn't be too surprising about the results considering the size difference between the boombox 2 and the studio 7 but studio 7 putting up a decent fight at low to medium volumes. Oluv did a test between the studio 6 and 7 not too long ago and actually preferred the 6. No argument that the boombox 2 is the most versatile of these options, though, with a much better battery but also generally costs much more (although I've seen some ridiculous prices on the studios approaching the retail of the boombox 2). Thank you for another outstanding and much appreciated comparison, Alan! 😁👍👏

I would like to say something to you. Thank you for these videos. I am definitely an audiophile. I personally own $7000+ worth of Paradigm, Mirage (old schol), and newer Definitive Tech speakers paired to a amps such as $2500+ Yamaha AVRs. I am looking for something portable, maybe something better for less money then the JBL. You are my source. Again, Thank you! Obviously I know these are comparatively very poor SQ, but for portability the best. BTW... is your music synched to the correct speakers at 14:40? The HK definitely sounds louder then the JBL with my headset in your video?
@alanrossreviews
@alanrossreviews Жыл бұрын
This really comes down to how you define loudness. If you take the whole track when one is bass heavy and the other sharper at the high end the Treble catches your ear more. We can tolerate a lot of bass and not consider it loud but in lufs or rms they will measure the same. Imagine If you had a subwoofer vs a speaker with no bass, how would you match them? for lufs but not to your ear? Or to your ear even though in a true sense they are not loudness matched . What i am saying is people throw out a simple one sounds louder than the other without realising the complexities of trying to fairly match two speakers in loudness but still catching tonal differences. I have tinkered a lot since this video to get the A B comparisons fair while still capturing tonal differences.

Personally at 40% I would just bring up the 250 range in the hk onyx studio since that is actually eqable without any major tradeoffs unlike the boombox where you eq 2.5 khz and that just brings bigger problems since there is probably directivity mismatch at around that area with the sound changing really drastically as you move more off axis. @@alanrossreviews I just skimmed to the 100% summary to look at the FR curve. The boombox does have way more volume but even then the sound quality still goes to the onyx especially considering the price you can get 2 for 1 of the boombox which adds stereo support. I just subscribed yesterday so I don't know much about testing procedures so may I ask what mic you are using ,what software you use to measure the speakers and how you measure the speakers? (outdoors? in room?) I would recommend using rew for the measuring software since they are simply the best IMO. Thanks
@alanrossreviews
@alanrossreviews 2 жыл бұрын
Ok thank you, from now on i will use rew as you are saying its the best 👌
@abielpangga6314
@abielpangga6314 2 жыл бұрын
@@alanrossreviews another tip when using rew. 5db increments are the best and make sure to use either VAR or 1/12 smoothing. VAR smoothing is the most accurate to human hearing. I would also recommend using a umik 2 or umik 1 as a measuring mic since that is the most widely accepted within a reasonable price mic.

The boombox definitely takes the win here, even at sub 50% volumes the loss in quality coming from the downmixing to mono on the onyx 7 is audible

Boom box does sound great. Having 2 onyx studio 7s, I can say they sound amazing when paired in stereo mode. From what I gather, bb2 only pairs in party mode without l/r separation. Thats a big difference. If I could only have one, it would be bb2 but I do appreciate my studio 7s.

@@alanrossreviews Thought you mentioned that in the video. You said party mode for bb2 and stereo mode for studio 7. Either way, studio 7 can pair as two speakers playing stereo in each or one for left and other for right. Sounds great. Worth mentioning that the auxiliary port can be used while connected via Bluetooth to other speaker too so you can still get that full left right separation.

I wish you would have tested the studio 7 plugged in wall outlet. That is the way I use mine. It's much louder and more bass. I want to know how the boombox 2 compares in that regard
@alanrossreviews
@alanrossreviews 2 жыл бұрын
Check my original o7 review, i do full tests when i first review a speaker. It does not have more bass with mains lead in, its just louder. Yes of course that means the bass is louder too but relative to everything else the amount and depth of the bass is the same.

I love my studio 7s. I would love boom box 2 if I could afford it. Seems that there is no contest when it comes to the bass, but there is no doubt that the right music playing on my studio 7 can provide a visceral rumble that is more than enough to justify the price for it. You know it's good when the neighbors are both annoyed and impressed by that bass. 😂

@@alanrossreviews I prefer your newer graphs than your older ones. The newer gives a better side to side comparison. The older ones you have to keep switching back and forth. That's why I really wanted to see how the studio 7 mains lead in compares to the boombox 2. I have two studio 7's and was thinking about getting two boombox 2's. But you are saying, with the studio 7, that the frequency response stays exactly the same shape with mains lead in as with on battery, just shifted upward (everything is louder)?

The boombox is much better here but 500$. I would simply go for the older Onyx 6 which sounded decent and can be found really cheap, idk what is wrong with studio 7.
@scotarg1973
@scotarg1973 2 жыл бұрын
Nothing wrong with it, depending on what you like. I know Alan prefers the slightly warmer sound from studio 6 but there is a level of clarity and obviously stereo sound that you get from the 7s. Using a third party EQ helps too.

I picked up an Onyx7 a few weeks back and in a 12 x 10 ft room with dance music at 50% its got that club like feel. A little boomy maybe but man does it gut punch. BB2 is for outdoors use. It's too bulky to use in a room also quite expensive. yes, all the negatives mentioned are correct but I decided to go with the sound. Alan's Onyx 6 vs 7 vid was the first time i heard the sound of thunder. The tracks he chose were perfect to bring out what Onyx studio can do. I'm surprised i never heard about them until the 7th iteration came out.
