My wife has a Charge 3 that did not have the Connect Plus button. So when we just bought a Charge 4 with Connect plus, We were able to connect JBL's Connect Portable app and update the older Charge 3's firmware to work with the connect plus. Very handy through the app. Also, both units we had to cycle the power on the iPhone running the app for it to recognize the speaker through the app.

I like your video because you explain the product in such detail. I was going to buy a JBL Charge 4 but after watching your video, I might be buying two of them, just knowing how the connect mode(party mode?) works and sounds better now. Initially, I thought it was just a marketing gimic from JBL but it seems like to make a big difference (even considerting all the downsides you've mentioned). I was quite surprised. Thanks for the party mode review ! ( Totally unexpected to hear Ripley's ' Fool to Love ' here, I'm a Ripley fan too, among other Korean pop songs. A nice little surprise lol.)

I had a charge 3 sold it and bought the Xtreme 2 not knowing that I can pair the charge 3 with the Xtreme 2 connect +, well bad for me, but I would like to know what's better in terms of sound and especially bass, one Xtreme 2 +two flip 4 or Xtreme 2 + charge 3 ?? Thank you in advance for your answer, would mean a lot to me .

I bought two charge 3’s to use them in stereo but they always cut out or just stop working all together. But when they work, it’s pretty cool.

they cut out altogether or its takes a while to sync up when start playign music? the first one is not normal the second one is.

@@brynnond.6952 Make sure you connect your device (phone or whatever is playing the music) to only one of the speakers. Disconnect it from the other. Then pair the two speakers using the connect button (make sure they are both connect or both connect plus and same firmware) then open the jbl app, wait for both speakers to show up, choose stereo and make sure the left and right speakers are correctly selected. The issue you are having sounds like when my phones bluetooth tries to connect to both of the charge 3 speakers that im trying to play in stereo mode. Only connect one to your bluetooth device, then connect the speakers together, then use the JBL app

Kieran Payne I have tried doing that but the issue still persist. I have noticed about a week ago when I used the jbl app that it notified me that there was a update for the jbl charge 3’s. The update said it was a bug fix so I’m curious if the update fixes the jbl connect plus issues that I am experiencing.

I don't spend enough time with the partybox type speakers to comment. However remember bigger drivers almost always sound bigger. Party likes big sound.

You seem to know what you are doing with these things. I am trying to achieve a more "consistent" sound in a room full of people meditating. Instead of having one large speaker in one corner say, booming out, I was thinking of four of the Charge-4's at a lower volume in each corner to produce a more uniform sound throughout the room. Would it work? Your thoughts muchly appreciated.

the problem is the jbl charge party mode just isnt that reliable. you will have to contend with dropouts and sync issues. you will get a more equal sound throughout but not that much louder, remember to double perceived sound you need 10 times the power.

@@alanrossreviews thank you for your wisdom. I am not looking for a louder sound. Actually I want a lower-volume overall, but just a clean consistent sound throughout the space, "equal" as you say. Right now I have one Boombox that is way too loud for those close to it, but ok for those further away. I was hoping to solve this by distributing the sound around the room with smaller units at a lower volume. If the principle works - I just need to find a reliable brand that can sync without issues as a dropout in the middle of a meditation session would be a disaster!

Alan, nice detail review. I need some help. I bought Charge 4 for main purpose of adding a mid center speaker for my car along with existing car audio by using my Samsung Note 8 headphone out Y splitter to aux in of car audio and aux in to Charge 4 instead Bluetooth. And car audio volume doesn't change but Charge 4 volume gets about 50% less than bluetooth at full head phone out volume and Charge 4 manual + volume to max compared to Bluetooth connected then after about 3 to 5 minute the volume picks up a little to about 70% compare to Bluetooth max volume. Same thing when I tested without Y splitter. I also returned Charge 4 and bought Xtreme 2 but this was slightly worse. I contacted JBL tech support, they could not answer. Alan, do you know why and should I use an headphone amplifier going into Xtreme 2 aux? Can you do a test review of sound quality and volume test between Bluetooth and wired in?

Alan, yes either speaker Xtreme 2 or Charge 4 gets 50% lower max volume running straight aux line than Bluetooth, I mean not together with y splitter, I tested both speakers one at a time. You can try yourself, run straight aux at max volume from any cell phone then unplugging aux cable switches to bluetooth instantly and you will hear almost doubled volume.

i tried this with my charge 4. at apx 1 meter i got 91.3db on bluetooth and 89.9db on aux. that does represent what you said, about a 30% difference. i havent looked at this any further but it could be the difference between the dsp on bluetooth vs no processing on aux. i would have to look into it more closely but for now, yes bluetooth is significantly louder.

in that circumstance i would say charge 4 because they play nice together, balance each other out to an extent, no stereo though just be warned.

you cant do stereo on different speakers. if you had two charge 4s or two charge 3s you could do stereo mode via jbl app meaning one speaker plays just left and one speaker plays just right. with your setup you can only have both speakers play the same sound.

Hi Alan - i was wondering why the sound was breaking so much when i was separating my speakers a few meters apart (say around a pool). Have you made a video about range? How does party mode work, is your phone streaming to multiple or there is a restream from the speakers? Would upgrading phones to a newer bluetooth protocol (if i dont have latest) or perhaps there is a bluetooth repeater out there... cheers and many thanks

So I can’t connect my charge 3 with my flip 4? My flip 3 don’t have the plus next to the hour glass shape but the flip 4 has the plus. I can only connect plus with plus and non plus with the another non plus. Is that why I can’t connect them both? The Best Buy guy that sold me the 3 said I could and Costco person said I could, so did they both lie to me? Or is one broken

i always prefer being able to play in stereo so i would say 2xflip4. but i would rather have 2xcharge 3s. if you dont want stereo then flip 4 plus charge 3 sound decent in party mode, compliment each other.

Yes, I've heard both and the charge 4 is much more clear as the body revolve+ is muddy and the bass isnt very good.

not sure, how are you measuring the loudness? the charge 3 will sound brighter maybe thats what you are hearing? have you made sure both are properly synced? which is master?

@@alanrossreviews Just by ear; I placed the Charge 3 on my left, about two feet away from me and the same distance with the Xtreme 2 on my right. I'd say the difference is actually significant, my dad also noticed the same thing. Both are synced properly, and I've tried using each of them as the master but got the same result. I looked on the internet and found one other person who described the same issue with the same models, but got no responses.

Right now I'm inclined to pass on the Charge 4 as your not the only reviewer to observe inconsistencies, nor do I like it's mono approach. JBL may need some time to work out early production bugs and tweak the firmware. I'll stick with Sony's XB 41 and B&O's P6 for travel, rest I'm planning on moving out as they wont see much use. My big hope was the Charge 4 paired in stereo, likely I'll opt for a second XB41 or P6, although a pair of the Sony's might be too much given the nature of the speaker.

True, yes, like yourself I want the duel speaker set up, mulling over a 2nd XB41 or P6 as with all small speakers they both have positives & negatives. No doubt a Mini Rig 2.2 set is the solution, equally not the most portable or simplest of set up.

except if you just use the minirigs without subs stereo is a breeze, once locked as a stereo pair you never need the app. Ok without the subs the bass is lacking but for a quiet listen in low gain mode they are enjoyable but a million miles in some ways from your bass heavy speakers so might be a shock :) still for me i cant get away from how 2.2 is just always a great listen with all genres while nothing else i have or have had is such a safe listen and good one too. its just crazy they dont find a way to pack a 2.2 into some sort of custom rig.

It's more related to travelling with them, four speakers versus two. I do like neutral speakers as well, again the travel tends to dictate. I don't think Sony's XB41 is the best sounding BT speaker out there, equally it's eminently practical; JBL Extreme 2 too big for frequent air travel (not owned or bought) JBL Charge 3 is neutered at the top end and suffers intermodulation BOSE Revolve + is wearing to listen to, and very, very mono Beolit 15 another not best suited to air travel, usability's not great buttons & charge indicator P6 is great until you raise the volume then it compresses bass heavily, battery life's mediocre A2 & A2 Active battery life is hopeless and compresses bass heavily at volume A1 mono, gets very hot when pushed, terrible buttons resulting in poor usability Fender Newport battery fails if the physical power switch is not set to off (auto off) mine did anyway.... Teufel Bamster Pro needs a bigger brother, but not as big as the Boomster XB41 bass heavy I could go on :) Obviously these speakers also have there positives, some outweighing others...

you dont have to travel with 4, not all the time :) you have versatility, you can go 1.1 or 2 minirigs in stereo. For sure bluetooth for travel is not about best sounding, its about package, form factor, battery life, how it plays outdoors, charging capabilities etc. To be honest i found the extreme was fine for travel if you have a rucksack or store in a decent size hand luggage bag. Yeah charge 3 is a long way from a perfect speaker but fits my needs the best. If you listen long enough some of the bad elements your brain kinda dials out :) i should say when i travel i use two o the beach, one either side of me, so i need two, so two smaller speakers suits rather than carrying two xtremes :) but if you are after a serious listen you simply cant push the charge 3s at all, true. Also consider, if there was one perfect speaker we wouldnt have the fun of trying a new every other week :)

If anyone want to get chrage 4 I wouldn't it's bass over powers the mids and highs are decent but I toke mine back

its a bass heavy mono speaker, for some it will be what they want, the bass is impressive for its size. yes the mids are dull by comparison.
