Offset tweeters help with edge diffraction and I'm glad they mirrored these instead of keeping the baffles the same for each side which would be loss and performance. Another great video good to see you again!

They're near-field studio monitors. The tweeter's offset design allows the tweeter's to be closer together or further apart to afford tonality and imaging to be tuned to the control room's acoustics. Kelvin: the David Attenborough of hifi reviewers. Good luck with the channel, mate.👍👍👍

I am about your age and had a pair of L100s some 5 decades ago. When it was reintroduced recently, I looked into purchasing them, they were 7 times what they cost me back in 1973. But these are a bit cheaper and share many characteristics with their older brother and may suit my needs better.

New to your channel and I am a lover of old school Hi-Fi gear. In the 70's and 80's I used to sell JBL in Germany to US military. My favorite JBL was the 4311 speakers. Those were used in most recording studio control rooms back in the day. You should see if you can borrow some of those and give them a try. Enjoyed your video.

Hi Kelvin great video and very interesting, as I'm aiming to get a pair of JBL L96, my dream speaker at the moment. A friend of mine had a pair a few years back , great sound, around the same size as the ones in your video but a three ways ported. Good to hear your review as I think the quality of JBL runs through all their speakers of the mid eighties and nineties large bookshelf size, and the prices reflect this. My dream awaits. I'll be going to view some amps to power them next month, looking at the Arcam A38 FMJ especially. Thank you , always look forward to your vids. Stu

I'd love to see and hear you review the "infamous" BOSE 901's. I believe both of those speakers were introduced around the same time ('72 - 73). (maybe that was the L100...) The JBL's were marketed as "studio monitors". Funny, you talk about relocating tweeters to improve the imaging. I added four 'external tweeters" to my system a few years ago just for that purpose. It works.

Hi Kelvin, still enjoying your channel, as you are by far the most charismatic reviewer of all things HiFi on this You Tube. It's not long now until you hit the big time I expect on the Beeb or something. Plus you review some super interesting stuff. Anyway, just wondering if this new JBL is like a newer version of a BC1 or BC2 with a bit more power handling? I have heard the mid range of the BC1's and found it truly beguiling. Big JBLs were my last speaker (250Ti) which did the big sound thing, too big for my room actually and whilst the mid-range was good, not as magic as the Spendor, yeah. So, what do you think, is the L82 along the same lines as the old Spendors? I was thinking of SP1 or possibly BC2, but a good refurbished pair could be easily half of what you pay for a brand new pair of these JBL. I can't get to hear any of this stuff as I am in Ireland, hence the reason why I am such an avid viewer of your channel.

I had the l100 and no doubt they were good... But I ' upgraded ' to the jbl LX66 (solid oak and weigh a ton) new in the 90's. Another album I know you'll enjoy is by a sub-contra electric bassist called, Yves Carbonne and his album is called, Seven Waves. Again, a reference recording of a 10 string sub-bass! An incredible instrument, (you'll see it on the album cover), more than capable of bass harmonics below 20Hz, ( human hearing's lowest limit). His playing is beautiful and melodious. You've got to get a copy of virtuoso bassist Victor Wooten's album, A Show of Hands. I've taken it to many a hifi show both here in England and abroad and nearly every time I've handed it to a manufacturer to play, they've put it on their "albums to get" list. His playing is off the scale, ( no pun intended), and it's a proper reference recording of the instrument. A must for your reviewing style, Kelvin.

Apart from a wonky frequency response causing it - over at diyaudio I've heard someone say that it's often caused by breakup above 20khz. Apparently it can cause problems lower in frequency. A notch filter at the breakup point is supposed to fix it, but I don't know for sure. I do know that I built my own speakers with hard dome tweeters, and it didn't matter what I did, I couldn't find a happy medium between being harsh or dull. I've never had that problem with soft dome tweeters. Unfortunately my measurement microphone doesn't measure above 20khz, so I couldn't try a notch filter.

These JBLs were a serious value for money gear back then and they are still now given the lack of real progress in budget loudspeaker design since the late 1990s. Though not as detailed as the "century series / 100-series" JBLs. The larger 3-way century series JBLs will win in the end if you use G N'R's November Rain as a test track against these smaller 2-way JBLs.

Sorry, but here we have an often mistaken Thing: The treble Attenuation! Fact is, the "Flat" Position is when the Wheel is turned to "max"! And turning it left to the "min" position, is just taking away signal strength from the tweeter! There is physically and electronically nothing else possible since this is a passive speaker! I know, the "0Db" point may fool you, but this is not the point where the Tweeter itself is in the "flat" position. It´s just the point where a 90Db/1m is matched down to the 88Db/1m efficient Woofer. So seen, the tweeter has a 0Db advantage over his Woofer-Partner in the House... So, for all who think they are smarter here: You cannot deliver with a Driver what is not there in the signal! That is impossible! And, an attenuator only can take away something from the signal. Never in this Galaxy, an attenuator can add something when mounted in a signal path in a passive system.

0 db probably means the recommended attenuation here (what it would be if it didn't have the pot meter, just a resistor) Now the potmeter is the resistor. At max you will have a louder than recommended treble. On an amp the 0db is also in the middle, not on the right.

They cost about the same as their bigger brother L100, I'd get the bigger one when I would have the money to spend on them. (And a Sansui AU-719 or so to drive them)

Young man, did you ask your wife permission before you removed the grills? Her friends might be coming over for tea and she may get upset to see them removed.

We all have preferences but let us be honest there is no way to truly hear gear without being physically in the room. Out of all hifi internet reviewers I have watched this fella does the best at verbally providing the detail required prior to auditioning yourself. Even better than the Hifi magazines that have been doing this for years. 😀 Although he is wrong imho when it comes to good vintage pioneer receivers and Kef Uni Q’s 😂. 🤔🥃

Really useful comment that Stilibits... Why bother watching? Of course listening is ideal, but personal reviews and thoughts are interesting. Plenty of channels to choose from.

Spew all the irrational guff you like. A sound demo is always going to be superior to some fella banging on.

So would I, but I'm not about to swim across the ocean and commit criminal trespass. Although personally I just let anyone in off the street to listen to my speakers, and for as long as they want too.
