+Crusader D I couldn't reply directly to your comment, but I am not able to put these on tripods by myself if upright. I can put the 835 on the ground sideways, plug in the stand horizontally, and tilt the pair upright very carefully. As for flatbed loading, it is possible by myself, but it's always nice to have another set of hands. Bend from the knees!

Hi Eric, thanks to take some time to give feedbacks. I own a pair of QSC KW153. Love them, they are reliable and the mid woofer added to the 15in and the horn just take how the band sound to another level compare to KW122. I pair them with KW181 (1, 2 or 3 depending of the crowd). MY QUESTION, have you had the chance to compare your SRX835P with KW153? Like I said, I love how they sound but the technology behind the QSC KW is getting old compare to the JBL SRX line and EV ETX line. Any thoughts on this? Thanks for your reply!
@soundfreak8892
@soundfreak8892 Жыл бұрын
Qsc kw 153 sounds good but nothing special, when you really do push them they distort. And also the kw153 needing a revision especially now in 2023.. however qsc is very reliable, it can take a true beating.

Great review! I've heard from different opinions from multiple professionals and most say to set your powered speakers at unity gain and to use your mixer to adjust db to get the highest fidelity. If these subwoofers are rated at 29hz at -10db should I set the gain on them to -10db? Would that yield better frequency response but a loss in overall SPL? Also what enviornment did you test the response when you noticed the drop in the bass range? Did it really "sound" better; or because there was just way more bass, which these subs can defiantly handle? Just curious.
@ericfavilla
@ericfavilla 8 жыл бұрын
+Adam Mester Always go as hot as you can from the source (without clipping at the mixer's input) and attenuate at the amplifiers for the cleanest sound. Avoid going above unity at any point to achieve loudness, you'll get distortion eventually. I often run the speakers' amps at -15db and don't even come near unity on the main mix. -10db at 29hz means that the SPL produced at 29hz is about 1/9th that of a frequency in the subs' optimal range. You can EQ up the low 30s to get more from it, but you'll be taxing the amps without much benefit as low frequencies are power-hungry and these already have great performance into the 40-35hz range. EQ-ing out the hole just levels out the response. For layered sub-bass effects used in hip-hop and EDM it gave the sound more fullness, not necessarily more intense bass.

Can I ask for your opinion on the three-way vs the two-way tops? I am planning on getting two (or more) srx728 passive subwoofers and I am debating between the different srx series passive tops. I want to have very powerful low frequencies (Covered by the srx728 subs) but I also want top cabinets that produce adequate powerful high and mid frequencies for use in bigger events. Would it be best to get the srx815 tops because they focus the same1600W power rating as the srx835's into only high and mid drivers, OR the srx835 tops? My only concern with the srx835's is that they will produce less high and mid frequencies than the srx815's since the same power rating in the srx815's is being used to also power the low-frequency driver in the 835's. Any thoughts on this?

With the passive Version of the SRX800 Series coming out I think it might be beneficial to look at the natural spec of the 2279 Driver. While the Passive Dual 18 box has a 2279H version vs the 2279F in the powered box the woofer has a -3 under measurement of 47hz on the low end. Seeing that the Active Version lists its -3 at 35 Hz I would assume that some of that lower end boost is tied to the DSP In the Unit itself. The -10 under @ 29/30 hz pretty much confirms the range. I still think I am going to go down the STX800 Line even though they are bit more Pricey.

It would still be way more expensive because you need a solid amp to power a stx sub
@markwirez
@markwirez 2 жыл бұрын
It would absolutely be more expensive and the only Crown Amps to provide that level of quality would cost more than the 828SP anyways. Iron Side Amps or High end (ITECH Quality or higher) would be the best choice. The XTI Amps don't quite cut it in my opinion.

@@markwirez xti6002 is solid, the xti6002 is completely different from the 4002 and down, but I would personally use poweesoft to power those stx beast, I wouldn’t really go stx in todays world, not really the best option as they discontinued it for many reasons, the tops aren’t really the best sounding but the subs are super solid!

Thank you for the review. Our church of 500 seats currently has 4 QSC K12's and I literally hate them! The midrange gets muddy on anything above 85db. Do you think 2 of these 835p will be a lot better? Again, it's not sheer output I'm after, as we rarely go above 90db, but I'm an audiophile, and I really appreciate quality. We run dual 18" subs FWI. On trade, the 4 QSC's will pay for half of the JBL pair.
@ericfavilla
@ericfavilla 8 жыл бұрын
+Trevor Crowe I think you'll be happy with the 835s. I'm still loving mine! I had the QSC setup before and they had a propensity to become quite harsh in the highs. Two 835s may be enough depending on acoustics, but you can stretch them further if you tune them to work with the subs correctly as speakers usually limit out in the lower end first.

For quality sound for church (speech and full band), rather go for RCF NX-L24 or RCF NX-L44 series or the DB Tech Ingenia series (Digital Steering and stacks without comb filter issue). These (JBL) speakers are monsters in terms of SPL for live band and DJ Music but are inferior in terms of sound quality to the aforementioned brands. But you get what you pay. RCF and DB TECH are high end brands and more expensive!

+Howard Smith Source (laptop, controller, multimedia device, etc.) into to mixer as hot as can go before input clips/peaks out, set using mixer input gains. Unity gain on speaker inputs, -20db on outputs. I'll put the amp's output at unity if I know I'm going to be pushing hard. Make sure the sensitivity is set correctly between consumer, line, and microphone. Read the manual on JBL's site. Use mixer's "main mix" sliders for volume control, staying under +4db on the output meter at the peaks. I have a mono setup and control the subs on the right channel and tops on the left so they're independently adjustable. Working from a hot source outward will net you a cleaner sound instead of compensating by jacking the gains.

Thanks for the video. I've also had experience with the QSC KW series, but am in the market for a new rig for a sound reinforcement rig to run bands...indoor gigs, outdoor patio shows, and outdoor street festivals, parks, etc. Anyway, I'm looking very seriously at these speakers...two SRX835's and two SRX828SP''s. Will be using the Presonus Studiolive RM32AI mixer and will be trying to save some $$$ with selection of powered floor monitors for foldback. I also have been looking at the Presonus Studiolive AI PA speakers, but having to buy multiple single 18" subs and more (smaller) tops is looking to be a deal breaker for my application. The Presonus speakers look great on paper, but I think the JBL will deliver more SPL at just as high fidelity again for the application I am looking at. Have you put wheels on your 828SP's?

+Roland It really depends on environment. I was DJ-ing a fall festival for 200 or so and with calm air 100yds was no problem as long as you keep the mains at/above head level. Wind is obviously a factor. You lose the "feel" from the subs around 50ft on a crowded floor, but the sound remains clean. It really depends on the acoustics at the venue and how you can use them to your advantage.

Hey Eric..A couple of questions for you. We run 2 282's and 2 835's per side for our band. Total of 4 top and 4 bottoms. To conform we should set the 828's at SRX Top and the 835's to SRX Sub correct? Also can I just chain the subs together and then to the tops in an "in to out" fashion?. Does that make sense?
@g3o5d
@g3o5d 4 жыл бұрын
1. Yes 2. You would only need 1 Signal Cable, then chain to the other High side, then down to the Subwoofer and back to the other Sub. Ideally, you would want to run the Subs on their Own Signal run with their Own Volume Control. There is no need to run a "Stereo" system as the Audience, generally drunk, will Never know the difference.

I'm looking to get one SRX835P for just regular listening. I used to have a Yamaha DXR15, the bass was pretty strong, but it couldn't hit the low frequencies when I would play rap music. Is the SRX835P able to go low?
@ericfavilla
@ericfavilla 8 жыл бұрын
+djcrazynick Yes, the official frequency response is down to 41hz, but they reach into the low 30's easily. EQ up the bottom end if it is lacking, just watch for limiting when cranked. You would really benefit from a subwoofer for the bass-intensive genres IMO. Demo one at your local dealer!

When you say you stack the tops on top of the sub is the sub vertical or horizontal? If flat are they high enough to throw thru a crowded environment?
@ericfavilla
@ericfavilla 8 жыл бұрын
+TTTXX Horizontal. The 835s have enough clean power to push through everything I've asked of them. It helps in the places with 7-8ft ceilings as well. If it is going to be really dense I'd put them on stands; too much of a tipover risk if you up-end the subs IMO.

I had this issue when I first got mine and I was advised not to use a power strip because the speakers plugged into the strip were sucking all the juice so the last speaker plugged into the strip wasnt getting enough power and kept cutting out. To fix this I was recommended to use extension cables that have a 2 or 3 way split at the end that doesn't run down a line like a strip, and to only have each speaker pair (2 subs or a sub and top) on their own 20amp breaker since each pulls 9.5amps on their own.
