Clearcoats are often an overlooked part of the painting and weathering process, and yet, they make the difference between a good-looking model and a great-looking one. Additionally, if we don't pay attention to what we are doing with clearcoats, we can end up with some unexpected disasters. This video looks at what clearcoats are, how they are used, problems one can have with them, and some of my favourite mixes that I've had some good success with.

John its great to have you back, this has been a long dicussed topic. I think you did a fantastic job on make it understandable. For me being European and not english-speaking, i often had real problems to differentiate between DULLCOAT and MATTCOAT of any sort in some weathering videos i have seen, so this really nailed it! First time watching, subscribed, and great discussion! I use testors enamel spray cans, and other spray cans, for my airplane model painting. Will Pledge future, not mixed, work the best (airbrush) as a clearcoat that will prevent a lot of the problems you discussed in the video? My plan is to apply a clearcoat, decals, clearcoat, then Testors Spray Lacquer (126OT Dullcote) for final flat finish.

I have been very impressed with Mr. Super Clear Matt spray cans purchased at Hobby Lobby or on Amazon. It is easy to apply and gives a nice, self-leveling finish. (It goes on much lighter than Dullcote.) However it is expensive. I've been experimenting with Vallejo acrylic poly flat varnish. The instructions on the bottle say it can be sprayed with a needle 0.4 mm or larger without thinning and I've found this to be true. However, the finish seems mottled without some thinning. I've tried 3 to 1 varnish to thinner (Golden Airbrush Medium) with better results, but I'm not yet fully confident with this ratio. JC, do you have any experience with this product, and if so, do you recommend a different ratio? Should I use the Vallejo airbrush thinner instead? Thanks.

Absolutely. This can work as an introduction if you want to work it that way. I did put the caveat of what I use is only what I've used and had success with. However, there are many other options. We could even have a debate about the pros and cons of Future/Pledge Revive-It as there are some modellers out there who are adamantly against using it.

Just this week, I sprayed Krylon gloss on my freshly decaled F7. The Krylon distorted some of the thin lines on some of the decals. The lines were straight as an arrow before, and very wavy after. Hours of work were ruined in an instant. Finding Testor’s clear locally has been difficult over the past year. I used the Krylon as a substitute, and ended up with catastrophic results.
@JCsRiptrack
@JCsRiptrack 2 жыл бұрын
Sorry to hear that. Do you have access to some brush-on clear coats? I've found that brushing on a gloss acrylic over a decal after it is dry can help seal it into place, and then once that is dry, you can use sprays more easily.

Nice video, very imformative. Near the end, when you were discussing your own mixtures, so you mix the Tamiya Flat with Future, then cut it 50/50 with isopropyl? You went fast through that, didn't follow totally..
@JCsRiptrack
@JCsRiptrack 2 жыл бұрын
Yes. I mix the ratio of the Future & Tamiya Flat Base first, and then I thin that mixture by adding 91% isopropyl alcohol in the same amount that is already there. Mixing it in measured medicine cups is a good way to go, so if I have 2mL of mix, for example, I'd add 2mL of alcohol. Does that help?

great video, thanks. I have a specific issue ... I have previously painted a "Tiger I" road wheels and hull with XF-60, and then flat clear coated with Tamiya TS-80 Flat Clear coat. I want to use (repaint) XF-88 dark yellow 2, instead ... because I think the XF-60 turned out too dark. Am I ok to spray XF-88 over top of the TS-80 Flat Clear coat? Or could I spray Tamiya fine primer (first), and then apply XF-88? Or lastly, do I need to remove the flat clear coat and paint entirely ... before changing color? Thanks for any help with this.

I'm trying to apply a varnish to a very small section of an action figure, because the paint smears in that one specific section. I don't have an air-brush nor do I want to use a can because again, it's very specific. I have Tamiya X-22 and am wondering what the best way to go about this with a brush would be? The area is out of sight so I don't need to worry about matching finish, but I want the area to be evenly covered in varnish to seal the paint. I have some old enamel paint thinner and also 99% alcohol used for cleaning electronics. What sort of mix should I be trying for?

@brianblanchette Hey great video. Just got back into modeling after a looooong time off. Painted a model with acrylics and I am now looking to put on some decals and weather. I've read a bunch about applying clear coats on the base paint before weathering and decals. Some say use enamel on an acrylic base and others say to use acrylic clear on acrylics. Is there a difference? I used Vallejo hobby spray for the base.

Nice vid. Very thorough. I'm thinking of using Testor's Dullcote to seal the outer surface of some N scale rock face scenery I made by color laser printing on paper, then crinkled up, and with a white glue coating on the inside. Do you see any issues there?
@JCsRiptrack
@JCsRiptrack 2 жыл бұрын
I don't think so. White glue is a water-based/soluble product, so it shouldn't interact with the Dullcote. The paper may soak up the glue and the dullcote as it's a naturally pourous material. Lots of drying time would be needed.
@donaldshroyer8633

@@JCsRiptrack Appreciate your reply. I was more concerned about the laser color ink on the outside of the paper where the Dullcote will be applied, rather than the white glue on the inside.

I want ask about polishing of clear gloss coats. Is there some way to avoid it? I try to be an aircrafts modeler in 72 scale. I use Tamiya acrylic paints and X-22 clear. And I can`t make a really good gloss coat before/after applying decals and weathering. I saw how modelers apply polishing over their clear gloss coats on KZfaq. Especially car modelers. I have tried to apply it too, but there is a problem on the edges. Paint on them can just be chipped out. So I even can`t understand: my painting technique is wrong and polishing is unnecessary, or polishing is necessary any way

Not a big fan of clear coats to be honest. I didn't quite ruin my model but I think it looks worse than before the clearcoat added. So I am not using a clear coat again. Besides in the real. world locomotives get cleaned and their weathering changes. there is no such thing as a fixed sort of weathering. But undoing pigment work and making my model look sort of dull (and not in a good way mind you) I see more cons than pros. I. know it might be frowned on because of powders getting everywhere but I really prefer the look of a non clear coated model. It pops more and looks way more realistic.

Quick question: Lacquer matt cote can ruin decals?
@JCsRiptrack
@JCsRiptrack Жыл бұрын
It can, yes. However, it depends on the chemistry of the decal sheet and the lacquer matt coat you're using, and how they interact. I find it is better to use an acrylic gloss coat first over the deal to seal it in and protect it. Once that has dried, you should be able to use a Lacquer clear coat without issue.

Do you thin the straight Future for the gloss coat too? Or just the Future/Tamiya Flat Base blends?
@JCsRiptrack
@JCsRiptrack 2 жыл бұрын
I usually like to thin the Future/Revive-It/Floor Care 50/50 with 91% alcohol. You can spray it straight through the airbrush, but it can be a bit thick depending on what you get in the bottle, so there is some risk of orange peel. Thinning it with a bit of alcohol even for gloss coats seems to work well. Apparently, if you thin it with Simple Green you'll get an ultra-gloss coat, but you need to let it dry in a lint-free environment(!).
@OhioCentralModeler
@OhioCentralModeler 2 жыл бұрын
@@JCsRiptrack Thanks for the tip. I don't remember thinning being mentioned for the Future-based clear coats in any of your previous videos so I was likely going to ruin a bunch of models without knowing that.
@JCsRiptrack
@JCsRiptrack 2 жыл бұрын
That's one of the reasons why I made this particular video. There's a good chance it would have turned out fine, but not thinning it does carry a small risk of orange peel. I like to err on the side of caution.
