These young kids REALLY need to learn that defense wins championships and secure you a spot on a roster. Look at Pat Bev or Marcus Smart, both were scoring threats in highschool but saw their niche as being defensive stoppers. Nowadays there is a surplus of PGs, 3 and D guys, knock-down shooters, and even a nice crop of young big men but how many great defenders do you see at the NBA level? Kobe may he RIP said that AAU balls is destroying the American game and he's right because it's spread throughout how high school players play in general. That's why LeBron, Kawhi, Jimmy, Giannis and Embiid in my opinion are the best overall player because they are great two-way players. Anybody can score but can you stop your man from scoring? Can you get a stop when your team needs it the most?

I'm going to call the same thing I called on lonzo ball despite all the hype and mixtapes he had around him when he was in highschool. He has the same flaws that lonzo has, a 1 dimensional player who's scores are almost 70% fast breaks. Blocks are impressive for highschool, but that's because like lonzo, he's bigger size and body mass wise than most highschool PG's gives him a huge advantage.. In college and NBA that advantage disappears. No next level ball handling skills and honestly extremely mediocre to allow him to create shots when being guarded by an equal sized or stingy defender, when facing elite level teams in a zone or elite defenders this will become apparent, just like lonzo. The mistake is hyping these kids up because of fast break ability and not focusing on the weaknesses that are required strengths in next level elite players. Look at Julian Newman, I saw the similar (though through different skill sets) hype of one ability and huge gaping holes on the rest of a players game. Lamelo ball always hand superior ball handling skills which, 2nd to passing is what separates a mediocre PG from a great one. Look at all the great PG's. AI, Jason Williams, Chris Paul, steph, Karen, etc. EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM have amazing ball handling skills that allows them to either create a shot, or draw defenders to them after the blow by to then dish off. Before you say "well he can learn those skills while he's in college". NO. b Ball handling skills are a combination of hand eye coordination that after years of practice, then shifts to a mental reaction ( best PGs train doing crossovers,, hesitations, spins, crazy movements,, blind folded)of the feel of dribbling the ball while making fast movements, cross overs, to spins, behind the back, to a hesi, so on and so forth that takes years and years to develop. If you don't have it by highschool level you, just don't have it.
