I love JD Sumner's singing and respect him even more for "bearing his soul" in this "interview." I did not know he is a RECOVERED alcoholic. His achievements and talent far outweigh this sad part of his life and I will always think fondly and kindly of him. He is now in Glory - a much better place !!!

Food for thought ...... I met JD back in 1993 when I was selling concert tickets for JD, and the Stamps, I know he lived Elvis very much......I don't believe Elvis would object to any of the conversations here...as where ever Elvis is now if he knows what is going on he would not want other people to end up like he did...Elvis cared about people...he loved his fans...he was a "people oriented person" ...I believe Elvis would say...if others can benefit from my mistakes, and be saved from drugs by listing to what actually happened to me in my addiction...then maybe some will come from my suffering RIP Elvis we all love and miss you.

i was a reporter. interviewed JD Sumner in Meridian, Mississippi. I asked JD about performing with Elvis in Las Vegas. He said it was the best time ever - great life, great money, great music. My cameraman piped in, "Wow, Mr. Sumner - Why would you leave a job like that?" JD looked at him quizzically and said, "Well, son - he died!"

About 3 years before JD Sumner's death, I got him and Ed Enoch to sign an old 33 album of the Stamps. Ed was gracious about it and even joked about their early 70s wardrobe and haircuts, but JD was hesitant. I almost took the album back then he agreed to sign it. I felt bad because his hand shook so badly while he tried to autograph it. I don't know if he was still drinking then or why his right hand trembled so badly but I thanked him profusely because I realized the effort it took.

Deep down many people love to hear when famous people Are addicted, because then their own life and non-talents doesn't seem so bad after all. But no matter what, a guy like Elvis outshine us all in What he gave the would of himself, the kindness he showed strangers and the talent he had. In short, he was a better person than most of us, so WTF if he took uppers and downers, to me he is still The King (Even though he allways insisted on giving that titel to other performers or Jesus ).

I might add here that not all gospel 'singers' were or are necessarily Christians. This is NOT a put down. I love J.D's singing and he was a FINE man, and a wonderful Christian in the latter part of his life. But he would have admitted himself that he was not ALWAYS a Christian - he was a singer, who sang gospel songs. Many stars use it as a throwaway line - "Thank God for this award.." when they don't necessarily mean it literally.

Rock bottom is the grave, I had 20 year heroin habit,was able to kick and stay clean BC I got engaged to my dreamgirl.she abdicated bout 5 years, I asked 3x,first 2 no,3 rd yes. I was functioning,she knew,dabbled but got scared after an overdose where she needed CPR,etc. I didn't,it was so scary,I cried BC if she passed,I would have shot myself right then.

What JD is saying is that he built up a tolerance for alcohol . I know my step dad use to drink and I never knew it unless he drank a boat load of whiskey . He was a big guy too . I think that had something to do with it . Now my dad was alcoholic and he was so tall and thinner than my step dad though , you could tell when he was drinking . He drank beer most of the time . My daddy looked a lot like Elivs back in the 60's and early 70's . My daddy was killed not long after Elvis died . ( March 24th , 1979 ) . He had quit drinking by then .

I was sober for 18 years and my marriage broke up 2 year ago...i lasted a year and the pain got to much so I done the unthinkable and drank again....I can't tell ye here in text what happened but I fear now I will die a rip-roaring alcoholic...I have 8 children only 2 are of adult age and I know they are very concerned for my wellbeing. I didn't know jd was an alco as I just loved him and the stamps with elvis on tour from a young age ... anyway sorry for spilling I wish ye all well and don't forget. My step dad was like that when. it came to drinking alcohol , we couldn't tell that he was drinking . I think it had something to do with the body builds up a tolerance for it . I could drink two beers and I'm out . I never have cared for alcohol . I grew up in it all of my life around alcoholics and some drug addicts and swear that my kids wouldn't grow up around it and they didn't .

When Elvis was staying in Vegas, my dad worked at the pharmacy where he got his drugs. My dad was the one that was requested to deliver them.

To bad J.D. never got to finish due to the interruption.

I find Geraldo's attempts at comedy, when he refers to Elvis' personal struggles, very pathetic. I've been listening to Elvis' music for the first time ever over the last 6 months and now I can see how much he contributed to the world with his Gospel music.

Having JD Sumner and McKenzie Philips sitting next to each other in a talkshow about addiction is probably one of the most unexpected things for me to find on youtube.

Theirs no such thing as a high bottom and their is not different levels of bottom. What a ridiculous assesment of someone like JD that overcame his drinking problem. How about just loving someone where they are at and just let love impact there decision instead of judging them , I seriously don't think Geraldo would have wanted his life away from behind the TV camera exposed. Everyone makes mistake even Elvis

Substance abuse can absolutely stem from spiritual problems. Look at ppl who have witnessed wars, killings, terrible tragedies, or abuse, they have or physically ill, they have to have something in order to stand the reality and take the pressure off. Ppl are different and everyone cannot be grouped into one category or labeled the same. Of course the body and brain can become addicted to whichever and that developes another illness all in itself. I’ve experienced it with family/friends. A person isn’t addicted until they become addicted to something. They can have an addictive gene or personality but there’s a catalyst that spurs it into action. Sometimes a habit can just catch up. However with folks with a physical illness or emotional illness it’s very much either spiritual or affects it. They are not well.
