He's always had designs on being a political bigwig, and if Trump wins Musk will be directing policy through his massive donations. (And that's why, perhaps, he asked for that big payout from his board members - or was it shareholders? - recently.)

I suspect Musk and Theil told him that if they wanted that 24 million a month, he had to select their guy.
