Agreed, i think its do to many of his pieces occurring thru didactic methods, like cello books,,but breval is amazing, he really gives equal love to melody and harmony

I agree with you. It’s a shame that most cellists only know him as the composer of that trite, boring and over played Sonata in C. When I go and judge cellists at string festivals, solo and ensemble festivals and competitions invariably there are several performances of that one piece and I have to restrain myself from screaming when it’s performed. Breval’s other sonatas, especially the G Major Sonata, and his concertos are such fun to play. I recently discovered his duets for violin and cello that my friend and I just began to work. This is the duet we’re working on. We’re having such a good time learning it, and my friend has become a big fan of Breval’s music.

Actually, he was cellist. And Bréval has beautiful cello sonatas, concertos and other pieces; even a Cello Method.

LOL Probably in a similar way that Paganini or Wieniawski hated violinists. 😁
