This man was a genius.

This is a good documentary on Jean Michel Basquiat. He was truly a gifted and talented artist. A GENIUS ahead of his time. I hope the art world would continue to give him the credit in shaping modern art.

Not a conceptualist but rather a pure intuitive, knowing about him and his process, though if I saw his work cold for the first time I might believe otherwise. You're right, James, graphics and mark making were a principle focus, his semiotic concerns based more on meaning of individual words rather than an overall syntax. My take, could be wrong. Thanks for documenting this.

A lot of material in Basquiat'a work references colonial/imperial exploitation. He must have had or referenced a book about this. Anyone know if he had one?what it was? Also Gray's Anatomy and Leonardo's sketchbook were on his shelf. I'm guessing that he must have had a core of key texts that he quarried. I see the Latin phrase " Lux Tenet in Tenebris" - "The light shines in the darkness (and the darkness did not comprehend it) " from the book of John (New Testament). Its a line Brecht also quoted. In this Basquiat painting I'm guessing he's pointing to unrecognised black genius and to his own situation (treated as an amusing enfant sauvage). I read Basquiat's painting as didactic and easily legible exploring the human being/anatomy/self , world resource exploitation/imperialism /racism and lack of acknowledgement of black genius. Basquiat said he crossed things out to make us read them. Thanks for the Oreo reminder: you see 'left' critiques of Basquiat as a sell-out. In the years before his death he was slagged off as being past it, a sell out, Warhol's pet etc. and was excluded from recognition by the museums he'd spent so much time in from childhood on. They still have little of his work but exploit it on t-shirt garbage, instinctual class and race hatred from these institutions imo. As well as English and Latin he uses Haitian Spanish words. The Latin phrases are sometimes the key to the painting. Its easy to google them now but were more arcane when he was using them. He had decided to stop painting at time of his death and to write. Thank you so much for showing these paintings in the proper way the eyes move over them and read them. Most books on Basquiat are annoying as you cant read the words.

jean michel was a very good friend of mine. it disturbs me to see people trying to disect his art and make something out of it that it is not. please read my book,..Jean Michel Basquiat, his time in Hana Maui. by Myke Embe' Cappadona he was a sensitive, sarcastic, funny guy..just like myself,..thats why we got along so well. please respect him as a person and stop refering to him as 'Basquiat'. his name is Jean MIchel. please,..thank you,..Aloha.

I despise the artworld. Not all of the artists themselves, but mostly the curators, collectors, gallery owners and stiffs walking around setting the rules. Absolutely diluted, as well as being a bit corrupt. It's classism, that's all it's ever been. 10% pure expression and 90% egotism. There are artists with a tremendous amount of passion and artisanship, but if they didn't graduate from so-and-so art academy with $100,000 worth of debt hanging over their shoulders, nobody even looks their way. Sickening and fraudulent. The world of fine arts is a business, for the wealthy narcissist consumer, to boast their "grandeur" lifestyles with expensive pieces they are oh-so-so "knowledgeable" about... ...with their esoteric descriptive words - "oooOOo, ahhhh!" I'm even laughing while writing this.... because it's the truth Loren, you seem like a reasonable guy, and you seem very passionate about art. But you're in too deep with this lot. I understand. Networking. Relationships. Blah blah.. Me on the other hand, will never "bow down" to any of these "aristocrats" As far as I'm concerned, they're legends in their own mind Basquiat probably would have agreed with me.... - Rob

Sure there were unfinished paintings found after his passing. But what you see here is the sign of the times "Mixing & Scratching" and, plenty of humor & history!

Basquiat is now a "Conceptual" artist....please....that beginning text is just so ridiculous. How do you quantify "pure"? Or "masterworks"?

His iconography is monumental. He was a child. Obvious. Naive. Martyr.

We throw around the label “genius” like it was just a dollar bill at a strip show. I see only a interesting young man who had an unusual talent for drawing. He might have been more but sadly we’ll never really know.
