Pour être plus précis il a été écartelé (il me semble) et quand la comptine dis par exemple "Jean-Petit qui danse, Jean-Petit qui danse, de son doigt il danse), ça fait en fait référence qu'à ce moment son doigt venait d'être arraché et ça marche ainsi pour chaque partie de son corps mentionnée dans cette comptine.

Si elle est bien pratique pour apprendre les parties du corps aux enfants, la comptine a des origines bien glauques. En effet, Jean Petit fut, en 1643, l'un des deux chefs de file de la révolte des croquants du Bas-Rouergue. Cette chanson décrit dans le détail la façon dont il a été roué en place publique.

Jean Petit is a reference to one of the leaders of "La révolution des Croquants" (the revolution of the Croquants) that happened in 1643 in France. His "dance" refers to its torture by the french army 😅

To all the people that saw it during french class, it is actually an song from occitania, the south of France, and in a different language: occitan. The language is the root to French, spanish and portuguese and is still spoken in some places in the south of France. The song is about Jean Petit that has been tortured because he led a revolution against the king, and his members were beaten one after the other, that's why Jean Petit is "dancing" with his different members. Pour l'anecdote, la chanson est d'orgine du 17eme siècle lorsqu'une personne surnommé Jean Petit en occitanie à tenté de se révolter contre le Roi de France. Il s'est fait battre à mort par le bourreau puis à été attaché sur une roue jusqu'a sa mort. Le fait quil dance est juste une métaphore pour le fait qu'il se tordait de douleur

In those dark ages, they used to punish criminals by tieing them to a wheel, break al his bones with a big hammer, starting with the fingers, and then tie his hands and legs to 4 horses, and make them pull the person in four pieces to finish it off.

Actually it tells the story of a peasant named "Jean Petit" that rebelled in 1643, was captured by the royal troops and tortured on the wheel. The way this torture method works is by breaking the bones of the convicted person, one by one, so here they start by breaking his fingers, than his hand, his foot, his leg etc.

Pour ceux qui ne le savent pas, Jean était en fait un homme qui fut torturé par "la roue" une methode de torture de l'epoque, qui constait a faire tourner une roue et de tapper dur chaque membre pour les casser, c'est pourquoi on parle de son corps et qu'on voit une foule 😊

I live in Béarn (in the south west of France), and here we have the same song, but in the local language (Joan Petit que dança), and I know that behind the nice little nursery rhyme, this song hide a macabre and blody story. In fact, in 1643, during the "révolte des croquants", many farmer and peasantry rose against the tax they had to pay, called "la taille". They elected three leaders, Lafourche (litt. fork), Lapaille (litt. Hay) and Jean Petit (Little Jean). These three leaders were betrayed by notables, were arrested, and tortured with a wheel. This consited in fastenig and breaking the body of the prisonners, limb by limb. That's how Jean "danced" in a horrible way, first the finger, then the hand, etc. The "bearnish" (god that sounds weird) band called "Nadau" wrote a song about it, called "Auròst tà Joan Petit" (Requiem for Little Jean). The more you know! And sorry for my bad english!
