I actually checked the ingredients list and the only "preservatives" there are calcium sulfate (it's also a source of calcium) and ascorbic acid (vitamin C). The rest of the "scary looking" ingredients are pretty much vitamins and other micronutrients, and baking powder. This kind of fortified food is pretty common in USA, if I've understood correctly. Now, it IS good to bake yourself if you like it, it's relaxing and you get to control the quality of the "regular" ingredients (what type of flour you use, what kind and amount of sugar etc). But yeah, always do research before scaremongering or deciding to burn all the Big Bread breads :'D.

This is fine and all but I really don’t like spreading the mentality of “weird name in ingredients = scary and bad”. Rather than just avoiding anything you don’t know out of fear, it’s probably a good idea to look up what it actually is first. Sure there are plenty of unhealthy things in some storebought foods, but alot of those “scary chemical” names will often end up being things you’d be fine with if they listed the more colloquial name.

“All that stuff in my body daily.” Uh, what stuff? Folic acid? Riboflavin? Things that are TOTALLY fine for you? I think it’s amazing that she bakes her own bread. It tastes way better and can be pretty affordable!! BUT with that being said, how about instead of being afraid of stuff we don’t understand and having a knee-jerk reaction, we just LOOK UP what each of those things is and decide whether you’re comfortable with each of them being in your body. It worries me when people see unfamiliar ingredients and instead of familiarizing themselves with them, just leap to “I can’t eat this, it’s bad for me.” That’s a fallacy because many things you haven’t heard of, or that sound “scary,” aren’t. In fact, folic acid is a vitamin supplement that is REALLY good for your skin and nails 💅 also known as vitamin B. so…… you know…… it’s okay that they add it to commercially prepared bread!!!!!

Some of you would be scared of baking powder too cause it‘s academic name is mostly unknown for consumers. To instantly fear preservatives and stuff to me is the same as ppl who are into conspiracy theories about vaccines. Not that those 2 are comparable in the damages they cause of course but it‘s the same ignorance and blind fear that leads to this. And I don‘t mind ppl baking their own bread either if you wanna do the extra work that‘s fine. But to think it is healthier to make white bread than buying it in stores is in most cases not true. White bread is always a piece of empty calories slapped into a ball and baked into a fluffy thing. To actually make healthy bread means that you‘ll need to make whole wheat bread (dunno if it‘s the right word btw am not american i meant the darker flour with the kernels and stuff still in tact and the shell of the grains in the flour) so really if u wanna make healthy bread u‘d need to use a different flour to begin with. But that‘s all i can say. So don‘t be ignorant. Research the things you‘re scared of and chemicals that are actually dangerous so you can check for those specific ones when u buy bread. Don‘t just look at things that are foreign to you and automatically assume they are bad because they aren‘t always bad.

My grandfather talks about “all that extra stuff” in bread all the time. People used to get scurvy and all sorts of other awful maladies because they weren’t getting enough vitamins, so food companies started inserting those vitamins into foods all people would eat every day. This was a huge benefit to people, especially poor people who couldn’t get their vitamins because they lived on a poor “bread, rice, and beans” type diet. No hate, but I think people in the U.S. have become so obsessed with knowing what’s in their food, that they want to get rid of anything they can’t pronounce… even if it was put there to nourish them.

When I make bread in my KitchenAid mixer, it doesn't stick to the bowl or dough hook. It still makes moist loaves but it's super easy and clean to handle the dough. No floured board. The only items to wash are the mixer bowl and bread hook and they're mostly clean. Do anything enough and it gets easier.

My dad taught me how to make bread once. He stood in the kitchen and told me what to do. After that time he told me “you can do it yourself, but I can still help” and the next loaf of bread I made I added too much flour but didn’t know. Do I went to my dad and asked for his help because the dough wasn’t working with me. He went out and kneaded the dough for four minutes before shrugging his shoulders and told me I added too much flour. I almost started crying because I had messed it up. But he told me that the bread would just be a bit denser and that he liked denser bread. The time after that I killed the yeast accidentally. It’s just normal white bread, but learning how to make that bread is so important to me because it was one of the few and far between times my dad ever had time to do extra stuff in my early childhood. And now that I’m almost in my last year of highschool and he’s teaching me how to make what type of bread I like rather that what he specifically likes means a lot to me

I want to start baking my own bread to have better quality food in my diet but I’ve never done something so many times and failed before. I’m now already at around 10 attempts, I try it a few times a year just to see if I can get it. The only time I’ve ever made bread successfully was when I made it for the first time at 9 years old. Talk about beginners luck

I believe I’m doing many things wrong, but mainly I can’t get the dough to become elastic and stretchy (it fails the see through test). Most of the time I think why I fail is because of the yeast, the flour quantity, or the kneading, but I’m still not sure yet. I would follow a recipe and the dough would sometimes be too sticky to knead. I would add tiny bits of flour to make it more workable. But then I knead for around the time that it says in the recipe, and my dough doesn’t look to be developing any gluten structure. I often don’t know whether I should keep kneading or not in fear of overworking the dough. I know that sometimes following a bread recipe precisely can still lead to unsuccessful outcomes because things like the flour, temperature, all these little factors can effect it. But I have very little baking intuition, so where more experienced bakers can see and adjust things if needed, I have no idea what I need to do. I would like to bake with some of my more experienced friends to learn from them but we’re always so busy.

Yeah, those “scary” nutrients are literally just fortified vitamins, countries all over have laws requiring food to have a certain amount of nutrition to them. Why else do you think cereal always had iron in it? They’re required by law to put in vitamins for your benefit. I’m not saying this to dissuade from baking your own bread, that’s epic, but it’s really not best practice to label the foreign as the bad just because you don’t understand the meaning of what those ingredients are. Saying you want to bake bread just because is a valid enough reason, you don’t need to add in fearmongering

Pro tips for freezing bread: 1. If you are by yourself, you can cut a large loaf in half and freeze one of the halves so it doesn’t all go bad. 2. Cut slices of the bread 3/4 of the way down before you freeze it so it is easier to cut later on.

the issue of common sliced bread being bad for health doesn’t so much come from the preservatives as it does the added sugars and ultra-processed flours that really aren’t much better, that wouldn’t be there in normal bread, which do very much add up. mainly though, homemade bread just tastes better, so much that when you’re used to it typical American bread seems like a completely different substance.

I apparently got my parents hate the food we eat in restaurants 😂 I started to learn how to cook the food they love and now they don't want to buy them anymore. They compare the amount they spend for 1 order and how much I can cook from scraps and make it even better and they feel it's not worth buying there anymore. Recently, it was bread! But it's soo tiring! And I don't have a stand mixer. We no longer buy bread since 3 weeks ago but now I have to bake almost everyday. But it's freshly baked bread. And even though it's tiring, they love it! And you are right! Just the best ingredients for the family.
