The saddest part is that even after Dr. Buss was gone, Jerry West was willing to come back and they shunned him. Not only did they shun him, but took his lifetime season tickets from him. It makes me question Jeannie, the Buss kids, and the Rambis crew for crying out loud.

You can only live off the glow of a franchise's past glories for so long before you need to update your CV and a bubble win and a WCF appearance just won't cut it with the expectations Laker Nation have - I think Jeanie Buss is one part of the reason (not THE reason) great coaches are refusing the Lakers job. Lebron and the circus he brings along with him is also a big part of it as coaches know they aren't able to coach all the players as a the whole team and they can be too easily undermined by a star player and while many will say that Lebron (and AD to a lesser extent) have earned that right, it sends an awful message to the rest of the team (especially the younger players) about engagement and a willingness to be coached. When you fire a coach after he has won the title (and don't think Lebron for one minute couldn't have stopped that from happening if he wanted to) what message does that send to prospective coaches? Come coach the Lakers, you will need to get immediate results, you will get all the blame and be fired if you don't win and even if you do get to the WCF or even win the title you will get no credit and still be fired oh and by the way your star player will have more power than you.........when do you want to start? Bottom line is that the coaching job with the Lakers will become a much more coveted position once Lebron and his shadow has moved on and the team can potentially be coach as a whole team.

@@showboat92CT and CA are both high tax states (both liberal democrat run) but the biggest difference is cost of housing . For the price of a single family home In South LA (“The Hood”) you could live in a well to do suburb right outside Hartford in a big house (ie. Farmington, West Hartford, Avon, Simsbury). 11.6 million a year from LA end up being close to the 10 million that Hurley will probably be getting from UConn. So definitely not an offer you can’t resist kind of a deal from the Lakers which really speaks to the lack of business sense from the Lakers. When Jeannie Bus and Rob Pelinka were strategizing about what numbers to throw at Hurley to pry him from UCONN how in the hell they come up with 11.6 million a year? They did know that UConn was renegotiating a contract extension. They did know that the highest paid coach in college bball at Kansas makes about 10 million a year. I am not in business but even I figured Hurley would probably be getting in the neighborhood of 10ish per year from UConn. Does 11.6 move to the needle to uproot an East Coast guy from a really good gig at UConn to move 3000 miles away to tackle a difficult rebuild project with the Lakers? A difference of 1.5 million a year is a pay cut once you factor in cost of real estate.

The fact that no one has held the Lakers head coaching job for longer than 3 seasons since Phil Jackson, and the fact that Vogel was fired 2 years after winning a chip, the Lakers have zero leverage. They have to overpay someone 2x in order to convince someone to get onboard knowing they'll just get fired in 2 years. Hurley couldn't take that risk along with having to live in a hellhole like LA

For the cost of a vet min contract, the Lakers offers could have been $15M a year, $105M over 7 years, and Dan Hurley would be the coach of the Lakers. How in the hell did the lakers think 11.6 a year is going to pry an East Coast guy from a really good gig at UConn to move 3000 miles to tackle a difficult rebuild project in the Lakers. This offer from the Lakers was not an “offer you can’t refuse” kind of a deal. Penny wise pound foolish. It’s not like there are a lot of good options for t y Lakers. Back in the day when they were deciding on whether to keep Shaq or Kobe. Jerry Jones would have kept Shaq and Kobe. Like the Warriors kept Draymond, Klay, Steph and KD until he decided to leave and so on... with the luxury tax. The only difference is Jerry has a hard salary cap he has to adhere to. He can pay the coach as much as he pleases. My man is spot on. The Lakers is a mom and pop business. Ladies and gentlemen, we're dancing around and avoiding the actual problem. Rob Pelinka is not, never has been, and will never be a NBA-caliber GM! He's in that position for two reasons and two reasons only: He got snuck in the back door when Jim Buss was suing Jeanie to keep his office because nobody took him seriously as a GM back then AND he was Kobe's agent. Get an actual NBA-level GM to replace Pelinka and this team looks different overnight.

They don't want to offer that much to hurley because they already had a coach in mind. It was all a fuss to cover up for lebron wanting JJ Reddick to be his player coach. It sounds good in hindsight but when you look behind the traces you find the culprit behind it all, lebron james.

Good for the Lakers for not giving Hurley a 9 figure contract. Coaches coming from the college ranks are not successful when they come to the NBA. Saying the Lakers could not afford to pay Hurley a 9 figure contract is simply stupid talk. In 2023 the Lakers revenue was 516 million.The most of any team. These guys are complete idiots.

Jeannie knows what she's doing = MILK Lebron for jersey sales until he retires or moves-on = LAL makes BANK + keeps their picks, instead of throw them away to make Lebron happy for few months = Hurley didn't take the job because LEBRON didn't want him to be the coach = Hurley would stop GM Lebron, whip the team into shape + expose ALL of Lebron's shortcomings/manipulations, to play less/do less = Lebron would retire that year, if LAL hired Hurley = Lebron wants JJ, so he can control him + get what he wants = less pressure on him to win, while everyone dumps the responsibility on AD, the GM, the head coach & upper-management, while Lebron pretends he's not manipulating anything at all = Lebron has mastered being a "loser", every season

lol….this is literally the dumbest take I’ve ever heard. No owner, of any franchise, any league, takes cash outta their other businesses to fund day to day operations of a sports team. 1) because their other businesses have shareholders that kinda frown on that kinda thing….2) taxes…3) they are billionaires for a reason. They don’t spend money like idiots. They’re not flushing hundreds of millions of dollars down the drain for championship vibes. That’s not sustainable. They chase championships while trying to keep a team revenue neutral to slightly profitable. This basic lack of understanding how the real world works is why y’all are daytime talking heads at ESPN. It takes unemployed bums at home on their couch at 10 AM to find this garbage believable.

Sometimes you need to pay to play. High quality coach in this tight market will cost you - especially when you’ve won back to back NCAA championships with double digit victories. It’s not like there are a dozen Hurley caliber college coaches to choose from. On the NBA side, there are not a lot of good NBA coaches available to choose from at this time either. That’s why they re considering JJ Reddick. Supply and demand. Basic business principles at play. Not a lot of good coaches to choose from. While critics will point out Hurley is unproven in the NBA, he is THE best college basketball coach and probably has a reasonable shot at achieving similar success in the NBA. There are no guarantees in life but it if I were the Lakers I would have offered a 9 digit deal and take that chance to rebuild the Lake culture and player development

@Eric-zk2hu Ай бұрын
Hurley is the top dog in college coaches but in the past 15 years there have been more than 6 of the top dog college coaches try to coach in the NBA with very limited success. Overall the value of a good NBA head coach has been going down IMO. Its the superstars that do it or don't do it the coach doesn't matter that much. So I can see why people would criticize the Lakers but I don't think they were horrendously wrong. If Hurley was dynamite and won the championship or had a great record than he could renegotiate his contract or just break the contract somehow and go to another team. And with incentives and perks of being in LA 70M over 6 years or 100M over 8 years or even 6 years the difference is not that great. Hurley is better off back east with UConn. 51 is still young but the world has been crazy for the past decade its good to have security. Imagine if there is a war or another pandemic or Trump destroys our country.

If anyone can make a successful transition from college to the NBA Hurley would probably have the best shot of anyone in recent memory. Together with Luke Murray (Bill Murray’s son) he already runs a complex NBA style offense at UCONN so probably worth the risk especially when you consider the alternative plan B candidate- JJ Reddick.
