Funnily enough, according to testimonies of her own soldiers she was quite stacked, and prettty, IRL too. But she was considered too pure of an idol and "one of the guys" to be a target of sexual desire. These testimonies coming from the Papacy launching an inquisitorial investigation into the trial that led Joan to be declared innocent, and everyone involved in sentencing her declared a heretic

Fun fact: Jeanne is one of the servants with an evil alternate self called an Alter. At first she just seems like a flat inversion of Jeanne, focused entirely on revenge against the English but when you get to know her more and see her regularly it becomes obvious that she's less an avatar of retribution and more a pissy, angry teenage girl with attitude problems. It's such a smart idea to make the "evil" version of a young character and just give them the personality of a moody teenager.
@rraimundobruno
@rraimundobruno 2 жыл бұрын
I like that they even give an actually good explanation for that, being that the original Jeanne didn't die with any regret or rancor over her murderers so the Alter one was created based on someone else's twisted feelings for Jeanne. Then when the catalyst for her creation no longer exists she has to find meaning for her existence in other ways while trapped in a Class which inherently makes you obsessive and destructive. The teenage analogy is very fitting. For all the criticism that FGO's early writing and design deserves, this one was an actually good idea IMO.

The alters themselves aren't actually outright evil, they're more that the vices of the person are escalated over their virtues. Alter Arturia for example, is a massive glutton. A person of vice does lean more towards evil, but not necessarily. In the same way that a virtuous person has vices, a person of vice has virtues. That said, Alter Jeanne is an exception as she's based off of Giles twisted perception of Jeanne and not Jeanne vices...or at least it was that way originally. Retcons aren't always for the better

Side note: Jeanne Alter has one of if not the most fleshed out and completed character arcs in Fate/Grandorder. She first appeared as an antagonist in the 1st Singularity as a being created from a wish with memories not of her own, she was pretty much just a character acting her part. In the first Christmas event, she it was revealed that she can Read and Write, this is important because Original Jeanne can't do those things, because she was an illiterate peasant girl. This starts to show part of Jeanne Alters character, she wants to better than Original Jeanne, more specifically she wants to be someone other than Original Jeanne, because she was just a copy of her, shes got a big identity crisis and self confidence problems hiding in a haughty personality. Then in the event that made her playable, most events are started by wishes from the holy grail by a servant. So what did Jeanne Alter wish for? This supposedly evil servant? She wished for a world where people loved her, she wished for copies of other servants that loved her, that was her wish. And when the event was done and all the copies were defeated and only one was left also fading away, she thought they would curse her for their fate, but instead they told her that they enjoyed their time with her, which just leaves her utterly confused as to how Anyone can like her. After this event you are given the chance to summon her, but in game its assumed you already did, and so you bond with her, ofcourse she pretty much hates us at the start, but her final bond line is pretty her accepting that yes, their is someone willing to stick by her through it all, even if they fall into the depths of hell with her. Then an extra Singularity comes along and shows how much she has bonded with us, someone she hated at first. Shes makes sure we are safe and protected, even going as far as sacrificing her life (temporarily, cause servants can be resummoned) to make sure we make it through alive all the while never losing her attitude, even at the end of the singularity she makes us dance with her because earlier on she missed her chance to do so. And then the final resolution to her character is in her Summer form, where she has finally fully accepted that their are people who like her for who she is, specially scene in her voice lines where in her original form she had pretty much only bad words to say about every other character, but in her Summer form she has alot of caring quotes she says for those same characters she once bad mouthed. She also starts out already liking us even at Bond 0 cause that is the lore of Summer Servants, shes the Alter Jeanne you already summoned just in a swimsuit, she just increases her bond with us some more. Thank you for reading my Tedtalk. Honestly I don't even waifu Jalter that much, I just think she had great character and story from start to finish.

In this case, not really. The body we see is that of a french woman who was deemed a suitable host, not an actual Servant vessel. In Fate/Grand Order, there is an “evil” version of Jeanne who is short-tempered and loves blasting things with fire (and half of the time is depicted with short hair). So, despite the fact that that girl is now the basis of most of Jeanne's alternatives, THEORETICALLY, The Ruler looks different than that.
@skychieftain

Well there were scenes where both the servant and the person were talking to each other. They looked quite similar. One of the main things servants look for when possessing individuals is physical similarity so yes Jeanne does look like the ruler version.

Who says art cannot be political. The English depiction of Joan is that of entirely masculine as a means to strip her of her feminine persona. Historical accounts from the French side had her with varying lengths of hair, from a short Bob style to long hair. Then again you're at war so it wasn't unheard of a male conscript having longer hair at the time since most officers were nobles who kept themselves trimmed as possible.

Then again every little fact like this may or may not have been distorted, ultimately it's not really important. The important part is remembering her for who she was and what she represents.

It's funny cause Napoleon's height is the INVERSE of how history portrays him lmao. But that's also the heavy English influence coming into play, where he's portrayed as a monster on par with Hitler or Genghis Khan when in reality he was a good leader who, compared to nearly every other conqueror in history, treated his conquered people well. Fate actually reflects this with his Man's Man mentality and his friendly demeanor. He treats people well, and is a good person. A warrior and a bit of a misogynist, true to life there, but a decent person.

I've never heard of the series before your coverage of it but it is fascinating how they intentionally represent these figures as they are envisioned, with the massive embellishment making it clear they (and by extension YOU) don't see these as accurate portrayals but rather idyllic fictional versions. They're not offensive in any way because they show an understanding of the cognitive dissonance between actual history and how we envision it. Plus despite the angle one could take that Jean's depiction is transphobic or queer-erasure the fact they went out of their way to make Da'Vinci a trans women (which perfectly aligns with this aforementioned design philosophy) means that no, it most certainly is not. It's like calling someone who disagrees or just doesn't understand your queer ship homophobic when you're both talking about your enjoyment of Steven Universe.

I personally like how in her debut anime Jeanne had another Noble Phantasm, basically a special move related to the character like Excalibur for Arthur(ia) and the 12 labors for Archer Hercules. Jeanne's normal Noble phantasm is entirely about leading her allies and supporting them having no outright offensive capabilities other than what her allies are allowed to do just like how she was depicted in history; as a leader, religious figure, and supporting pillar of france during the 100 year war. Now thats already a good way of adapting her history into a special move but she also has an offensive noble phantasm about her being burnt to the death, turning her into the epicenter of a massive burst of flames that under normal circumstances would have burnt her and the enemy, yet she still uses it when it was needed despite the dangers of using it

I find it kind of hilarious that considering Fates orgins as an erogame, if you look at the female Servants from that game only one has a particularly sexualized design, and when you consider who she is it could be argued to make sense. Meanwhile as Fate developed into a more mainstream anime franchise the female character designs, barring some exceptions like Anastasia, seem to trend towards more sexualization rather than less. Compare Saber from the original FSN, with her sensible breastplate, to Jeanne "bouncing boobily", for instance.

I don't know if you ever plan on getting back to doing Fate analysis but I would love, love, LOVE to see you tackle Voyager as a character design (and as a character in general) one day. It's probably one of the silliest concepts in Fate (the literal space probe is now a precocious child), but it's also one of the most endearing.

Or make a male character in a side team inspired by gender-bending myths and legends who also starts the show as the comic relief. Granted, this is from a show where 90% of the appeal is cool character designs and watching it *completely* unironically gets harder and harder over time, but can't exactly *not* give them props for having a cast based on genderbent myths.

The modern interpretation of she wore men’s clothes and kept her hair short means she was trans is missing the fact that she was going into battle and it was just convenient to do both. She wouldn’t have had long hair and pretty clothes on the battlefield. She was a Christian woman in a medieval time, she wasn’t identifying as a man she was dressing for success

Historically, from accounts of people who have seen her. Jeanne was a taller than average woman who was tanned from working under the sun, slightly muscular from physical labor, had short hair and dressed like a man. So Fate took away what most possibly could have been the most iconic tomboy in Fate history, why must you spite us so.

Because perception is reality in Fate. Common perception of Jeanne is the pale, blonde beauty, so that's what she became as a servant

even if there are flaws. Why do anyone needs to hate it, hate is quite a serious attitude. Tbh I only watched two fate animes and I found some quite absurd interpretation they put on Chinese historic characters (I’m Chinese) in the FGO. But why do I hate them, I simply do not care. Why would you even go ahead try to pretend you know what Skyen thinks. He already said everything what he thinks in the video, and you just pretended to be smart and that is too much ego tbh

Jeanne is also possessing the body of Laeticia , a french woman during her first summon. Rulers don't normally show up during Holy Grail Wars unless there was something odd with how the war was set up. Jeanne in FGO is purely a servant and referencing the body she used in F/Apocrypha, basically an unofficial pseudo-servant.
