I'm from the South. 70 yrs old and her life stories resonate with me to the tee. I am late in discovering Jeanne but I am so grateful that I have, there are so many of my own memories in her stories that I not only laugh out loud but they emotionally bring me back home again. And yes , I pronounce certain words Southern just like her. People have mocked me all my life up here in Pa over my way of saying. " wash, cement, window, but I love my way of pronouncing them , it's a part of who I am. In this time in our lives, we need Jeanne more than ever

I lived in Pompano Beach FL once. First time ever out of my little TN town. The payroll officer at my job was merciless in his quest to get me to say things he could laugh at. I had a real Southern drawl and he was a Northerner. I decided that I would always make him laugh so I would exaggerate my drawl just for him. I know what you mean.

When I was in the 3rd grade, someone decided that we needed to learn to twirl a baton. Now, we were poor. It was soon after WW2 ended and we didn’t have money for me to have a baton, but I wanted to learn to twirl. My mother, the most inventive person I’ve ever met, decided to make a baton for me. So when lessons began, i was ready. She had made me a baton out of a part of an old mop that Daddy had cut for her. On one end there was an apple and on the other was a piece of carrot. The other kids may have made fun of me, but if they did I don’t remember it and I smiled with my baton and I learned to twirl right along with all of the other girls. I smile and I remember this when I hear Jeanne tell this story!

As a “retired “ majorette from 1963, my junior year in high school in Frankfurt American High School in Frankfurt, Germany, I found that routine , Ms. Jeannie hysterical! Hardly had I arrived and my mother registered me at school, the band teacher learned (thanks Mom!) that I had twirled a baton since junior high so I was immediately promoted to head majorette to lead the band during Oktoberfest and other holidays in Frankfurt and other small German towns. It was an honor until I realized there were only two other majorettes. We had a wonderful time that year but you just made me have such a hilarious , warm memory so thank you so much! P.s. I just turned 75 and can still twirl a baton....a bit slower and with sounds like “oh, ow, oo,” but still able!
