Retirees who struggle to meet their basic needs are the ones who could not accumulate enough money during their active years to meet their needs. Retirement choices determines a lot of things, my parents both spent same number of years in the medical profession, my mom was investing through a financial advisor while my dad through the 401k. On retirement, my mom retired with about $5million, while my dad retired with roughly $3.8million.

You are right. I’m in my mid 50’s now, my wife and I were following this same trajectory. Last two years, I pulled out my money and invested with her wealth manager. Not catching up with profits over the years, but at least I’m earning more. I’m making money even before retiring and my retirement funds has grown way more than it would have been with the 401k.

It’s unfortunate most people don’t have such information, I don’t really blame people who panic cos lack of information can be a big hurdle. I’ve been making more than $25k passively by just investing through a financial advisor, and I don’t have to do much work. It doesn’t matter if the economy is crashing, great CFA will always make good returns.

For me, being retired is having the flexibility to - if you want to do some work to make money, do it totally on your own terms. As in, not having an employer determine where you are, when you are doing things to make money, or giving you "vacation time". If I can do whatever I want pretty much whenever I want, I'm retired. If I can do some things to make some money, that's a bonus!

Jean, thanks for the video again! I think everyone of us should define what our own retirement means. Next month I would have "retired" for 2 years, and i spent year 1 learning about investing and managing cashflow, year 2 I have focused on health and loss 20kgs and am enjoying the joy that nature brings me in my walks in the park. I am excited about year 3 as I want to focus on the spiritual part of myself. Many people around me cannot understand what I am doing, but its ok as long as I myself are feeling good about it.

Hey Jean, great vlog. Me, 61. Chose (forced), to stop work, rheumatoid arthritis. A blessing in disguise, yet I know my super / savings won't last. And so begins the journey for something meaningful that's also off value + a level of fin support. The retirement model is so outdated, yet a path many follow. And that's what makes us different & unique: Free will and choice. Love what you're doing, be well. 🙏

There is a saying, if you do what you love you never work a day in your life. I think that's what we should aim for, not working ourselves into the ground hopefully making it to retirement to then enjoy our life. You never know what's around the corner so we should enjoy life now and make the most of every day! It's easy to lose sight of that sometimes though so thank you for the reminders Jean!

Hey Jean, thank you again for uploading these wonderful videos! I have a video request: I have taken leaps of faith in some areas of my life and have started to align my outer persona with my true inner self, but doing so is so challenging, particularly the social aspect since one has to leave friends behind who either are not self aware enough, do not understand your path or are simply not supportive of your choices. It would be extremely beneficial if you could make a couple videos about how you handled it yourself, and if it was hard for you too, as it gives people faith that they are not alone in their path to feel lonely in the beginning. Any videos on the social aspect of starting to walk your own path would be so beneficial to so many of us. Please consider it, thank you!!
@JeanVoronkova

Hi there! thank you for leaving this suggestion, i really appreciate you sharing your story and I hear your request. I actually have some notes jotted down for a video about this topic - it's still thoughts in formation though - but essentially, first, i wanna say kudos to being brave and started to walk down an alternative path to stay true to yourself. About the social points - I faced a lot of flak and criticism too - i've mentioned in other comments & during interviews before - you know the accolades n positive comments blah blah only came now, 11 years after i started my journey, cos of this YT channel starting to look somewhat successful and me getting some positive news coverage back in SG - but for most of the 11 years mostly ppl look askance at me and ask condescendingly "what is it that you're doing again? Not a lawyer anymore huh?" People out there are like sheep. They just kinda flock to where most others are standing. So for me the positive and supportive comments now that i get - it doesn't really signify tbh. It's kinda ex-post-facto for me already. And the important thing is that we were good ppl, we worked hard and we got lucky, everything worked out well till now. If we had been unlucky or stupid and things went bad, ppl would just look at us and brand us that cautionary tale instead of "success story". I think what others say has very little value - it does not make or break your journey - what you do actually does. So mostly I ignore. I seek counsel, when Im in quandaries, from ppl i trust who do not condescend and whom i feel has valuable input and insight. If there are none, I try to make my decision based on logic n finally what i feel. Loneliness is always present on this path i feel. I always have felt it since young cos i feel i see thing differently from most ppl n from my family so i've always been somewhat alone. On the journey out here you find some likeminded persons to make friends with, but the loneliness never really leaves. My husband is the most likeminded friend i've ever encountered and I married this guy. Now he & my dog make me feel "un-lonely". But i do miss friends from my old conventional life path. But its hard to hang on to them too cos they really (esp after 11 years) don't understand what my life is about and their lives are about taxes and maids (SG context haha) and children and SG politics. It's just the reality. U find more likeminded new friends on your path eventually. I hope this helps.

Great question and perspective. Once I started to 'veer off the path' I found out quickly who my real friends were and that was fine because it helped 'thin the herd' so to speak, revealing who my true friends were who were positive and encouraging, even if they did not understand. Peps in 'recovery' have to do this because they're old friends will take them back down to destruction, so become your own best friend and you will find others like-minded to share good times and plan a happy future🙂

Hello Jean Your videos are great and the quality of filming and editing is so professional. I think the issue is with the meaning of the word retirement. Because it does mean to stop work. I also think it may be a very touchy, emotional and fearful time for many people. Statistics show a large percentage of the population doesn’t have enough savings to sustain them for a month. Even in affluent countries. “half of the world's net wealth belongs to the top 1%, top 10% of adults hold 85%, while the bottom 90% hold the remaining 15% of the world's total wealth, top 30% of adults hold 97% of the total wealth .” Scary and sad. What you and Vitaly are living is beautiful and you both deserve it. Maybe you can coin a new term or word for the amazing lifestyle that you both have, and sharing it in videos so that others can become aware sooner and not get hung up on the term.

It is true that the traditional thinking of retirement is to not be working in your 60s and do whatever you want. But it could also mean having the freedom to be in control of your time while being financially stable. Most of us are bounded to the working hours of our job which leaves us with very little time outside of it to actually live and do things that you actually enjoy. I am seeing most of my peers/colleagues getting caught up in the cycle of studying>working>marriage>starting a family > retiring. Nothing wrong with this but it’s good to always ask yourself , “Am I really okay with this or do I want to live my life differently?“

I never planned that i will be retiring at this age before the full retirement in my country. When the plandemic started i got no job but got my employment insurance that time lots of benefits given to people if you lost a job. Then a job came without me looking for it, i grabbed it coz its paid cash. Then the job left and i came to realize that i will no longer like to work until i fully retire. Now I'm enjoying my freedom like I'm not obliged to wake up early, no more stress in work, travelling back and fort, no need to deal with toxic co workers. My energy is no longer in having a job that works for a company. I live within my means and happen to collect money from my semi retirement and so on. As if it just happened in my life that i will be ok till I'm fully retired. Now I'm learning about natural healing which is very helpful to me and who knows to some people someday. The pressures and stresses in my life are gone. I'm loving nature and loving myself more. I will go back to my love in drawing by hand and drafting in computer and playing musical instruments. I also love self study in making videos and who knows one day my own channel🥴🤔 I know it's never too late 😊

Hi Jean. Just got a chance to catch up on your most recent videos. Back in Aus now. Whoever defines retirement = not working, not doing anything at all is a bit narrow-minded. Retirement simply means having time to do whatever you want to do without having to worry about earning money for a living, but if we do earn money doing whatever we want to do, then that's a bonus, but we don't have to rely on it. The old 'holiday forever' image of retirement like going on a cruise ship all the time or sipping wines and sightseeing all the time is totally unrealistic and impractical. I spent 3 weeks in Bali 'holidaying', and towards the end of the trip I thought to myself there's no way I would just holiday in my retirement, and I visited a lot of places, did a road trip on motorbike all the way from Ubud to Lovina and back, and I was actually doing work remotely while I was there as well and I still felt like it was too much relaxing haha.

Love this video. Retirement needs to be planned - family, finance, social, recreation. As long as one feels that balance is right at that moment in time, the person is retired and living a good life. If one is not prepared and forced to "retire" due to change in circumstances, then there will be a painful adjustment period.

I have heard things from others where if people aren’t working they don’t know what to do with themselves! And say they are bored! What is bored! Lmao! IMO having loads of interests and experiences do help!🌺🌺 I’m glad you’re in a position where you are retired but what is it! You are still living! I’m happy you have enough and savings to do this! 🌺🌺I hope I can do this but for now! Working whilst trying to enjoy life and living not just surviving or existing! I try to do something I love every day and do my hobbies, like walk, being in nature, relaxing and seeing friends! I’m trying to find my passion whilst working lol!🌺🌺 Meaning working but not working! As in something that feels as though it isn’t the typical job but what I enjoy!☺️☺️

Jean, this may be one of your best vids although a little different from the 'life in Bali' ones because it brings the retirement topic up front and center which of course is defined different for everyone. Very similar story to yours, however I stayed in production and let 20 years slip buy living the 'good' life in southern California. And you are correct, life goes by quickly because now it feels like I am having breakfast every 10 minutes. From a financial professional, I assure you, the information she lays out is accurate and actually the numbers are probably conservative. Do not fool yourself, costs are increasing and will continue to and you will need more healthcare as you get older, it is just a matter of time. Failure to plan, is planning to fail and this would be a very uncomfortable fail if you let it. You either come up with a plan learn some new skills and make a decision or as she points out, life, the government, the economy etc. will decide for you, and I assure you it won't be a preferred lifestyle.. Simplifying your life will serve you whatever path you decide to take, but get started on it now, it's already tomorrow somewhere!🙂

What it means is I no longer have to go to a FT job in order to pay the mortgage and kids tuitions and having at most 3.5 weeks of vacation a year where I try to pack all my travel in. Don't get me wrong, my job affords me a very good quality of life, I generally enjoy what I am doing and have a decent work-life balance so really have nothing to complain about but am still tied down to a job with very little room for taking time off when I am burnt out or want to just pick up and join my friend (who is retired) on her travels. Also people are expected to live until 100 and there is a lot more years of living expenses so most people need to supplement their retirement savings. And if one is able bodied - why not be productive? Sitting around (and honestly how many people like to play golf?) will just accelerate the onset of dementia.

Yes, I fully agree it makes no sense. Retirement means to each individual something different. And as you have pointed out, people who do absolutely nothing tend to become very uneasy. Everyone I've met who said they have retired without something to do, ie; part-time work hobby, etc. start to get very uncomfortable in almost every sense of the word, mentally physically emotionally. I see what you two are doing is nice to do, not need to do, which to me IS retirement because you could choose tomorrow to not do it or hire someone to and still live happy and comfortable. Even here in Los Angeles people retire and still try to find things to do but probably because of the ultra high costs here 🙂

actually technically a lot of resources out there define retirement as "leaving the work force permanently" - which kinda ties the concept to the idea of leaving "a job" - which has little to do with work nowadays since work is such a different creature these days due to digitalisation. But yes. agree that if you need income to survive n therefore still work, not yet retired. Fortunately that's not the case with us. We are well settled with our passive income.

I think retirement means something different to everyone. To me, retirement means freedom to do whatever you want because you built your life that way. Even if that means still working, but on your own terms and for yourself. Something that you love. That’s still retirement. The only people who put retirement into this category of age and absolutely no work, are those who are very traditional or still working that crappy job they hate and never actually worked to reach retirement early.

Retirement is the present moment. My view is that as long as the generated income can cover most of one's annual expense on a continuous basis, one is set for life. Flexibility is the way to go as per my perspective. One can reduce the expense if there is a need to do so. No hard and fast rule. Enjoy the present moment of time. WTK

I do actually know people who have tried alternative lifestyles and u-turned cos they found they liked the stability of their original life better. It's nothing bad. To me if your resources are not enough to cover your expenses, you are not retired or perhaps semi-retired. If you can cover your expenses with your existing resources you can do whatever you want, including volunteering or working in fulfilling jobs where you don't have to. That still seems like it should be "retired but working because: " where the "because" is intentional and meaningful to you.

The word "retirement" has a common definition with little variation in meaning, bascially, "the act of leaving your job and stopping working". Creating your own narrative around what this term means for you does not change that definition. How you fund your working "lifestyle" in Bali as a content creator does involve continuous time and effort to remain relevant. You and others, such as Vagabond Awake, like to promote a lifestyle that includes creating content for money while also trying to create passive income, just not in a traditional job. If you have saved, invested wisely and have adequate passive income, then there is no need to try and create addtional income by churing out social media content while at the same time trying to convince your audience you're "retired". Real retirement is about freedom of choice, doing what gives you a sense of fulfillment and joy. If you make money from this all the better, but that would not be the primary motivation. An alternative lifestyle that must be funded e.g. by managing properties and creating online content is one way to make a living, but if such a choice is necessary to fund your lifestyle then it's a job. Becoming financially literate and astute is the best way to build a comfortable future retirement that does not require you to keep working to fund it. In summary, let's not confuse a working lifestyle choice with retirement from work.

I just came across this first comment from you. Hey man you really do spend a lot of time commenting on my videos! Again, I repeat - where did this idea that we depend on our youtube income come from? I assure you - I'm still a lawyer in my brain despite having left 11 years ago. You think I'll hang our existence and the dog's on some silly online venture which income we can't control at all cos its just some algorithm doing its own thing out there? That's just naive and silly and for those impressionable young ppl out there I specifically said I do not recommend this at all as a livelihood in my old videos (I think the extra monthly income ideas one). Word definitions only work within the paradigm they were born of in the first place. The paradigm now has changed my friend. And your point off which you keep banging out these comments is not even factually accurate - we do not in fact depend on YT income for our lives here. We are actually very comfortable set from our investments. I have a lot of fuflilment from putting out these videos. You know why? For 9 years before i started doing YT and putting all this stuff online, I keep gettin asked to do coffees with random ppl from all over. Cos they're all unhappy. They're looking for a way out. They wanna hear about it. I just got tired of repeating my stories and my thoughts mate. Plus I am fundamentally a structured and disciplined person. I committed to this weekly video thing 3 years ago and so its been 3 years. We r cutting back now. But I'm proud of the channel. I"m proud of how far we've grown and i wanna see where it can go. If it was all about the money i can assure you that 1. this channel would not be putting out varied types of content (cos it messes w the algorithm promoting the videos), and 2. you'll be seeing a heck of a lot more sponsorships, cos I got sponsorship offers coming in from everywhere. But no, I make a conscious choice about what we're doing. And i'm happy with what we have done.

@@JeanVoronkova Emotionally charged, perjorative attacks like this are totally unwarranted. Yes I think retirement does not = work (by defintion) and I explained why. It's not a subtle distinction, and you're chosing instead to posit your own self-styled definition. You keep harping on how you don't rely on YT income, great, but that was just an illustration that your taking issue with way too personally and literally. Yours is an alternative lifestyle that suits you, calling a alternative working lifestyle a form of retirement suits your narrative but no one is delusional or "silly" for disagreeing with you. Learn to handle disagreement with a bit more poise and grace.
