The professor makes a great point about how the key to life does not rest with success in one exam. There is more to life and if a person works hard, is persevering and has some luck on their side, every miracle and goal is achievable.

Okay just to clarify a few things. Im in iitkgp 2024 passout batch. Students are definitely not interested in solving 10k calculus questions or 15k trigonometry questions. The 17-18 year old kid is interested in the life & opportunity that is offered by joining an old IIT. I truly believe that the kind of atmosphere and the facilities available to iit students is something worth working hard for. He is saying that the first year students already look tired, well yes they topped one of the hardest competitions and then again now have entered an even harder competition. The students work so hard managing internship, academics, society activities, etc etc. only an iit alumni or current student can truly relate to the pressure felt by each and every student. This is not the student's fault. This is the culture and system that we have developed for the brightest students to experience in their college life. The society has normalised working extremely hard, & these students have adapted to it, that's all.

IIT prep is ruining more careers than it is making in India. Students under the pressure of getting rank and marks focus not on learning the concepts with fun and develop contextual understanding but move towards fast-paced coaching institutes who provide material for cramming the syllabus rather than learning. This is the main reason why students are doing suicides in Kota despite the subjects being so interesting and wonderful to learn because students are not taught how these things like wave equation applies to real world TV / cellphone communication transmission but are burdened with formulas and problems. Students actually do not read books like Resnick but cram from coaching material. Even inside IITs most students do not take interest in their core branches but rather focus on other kind of jobs unrelated to their core engineering. We need drastic measures to move away from this rat-race and madness and reform in education system is very much the need of hour. Parents and society are equal contributors in this crime.

The real method of removing discrimination is to allow students to pursue courses across disciplines like in universities in EU and USA. Don't restrict to fields like Mechanical, Chemical, Electronics, etc. Publish a course dependency graph and allow anyone to take any stream of courses (obviously fulfilling prerequisites at each stage). Encourage interdisciplinary learning rather than encouraging narrow specialisation. Specialisation can come in Masters and PhD. But ultimately this needs more teaching resources, higher student capacity, larger number of qualified lecturers, etc. The increased number of IITs is good, but the new ones are supposedly not at the same level as the old ones. This needs to change, lecturers need to move around and lift up the newer IITs. And so on. One of the great things that IIT-M has done over the years, but nobody appreciates or uses that much is NPTEL.

One of the greatest inventions in the previous century and this century is the aircraft. The Wright brothers were not aeronautical engineers. They succeeded in controlling the aircraft absolutely. I don't think that they were aware of integral and differential calculus, differential equations. Now, what are our IITians contributions to heavy engineering? (In India) It is a doubt, my knowledge in this regard is very little. Recently I happened to see a small boy reading a book called "inventions and discoveries", out of academic interest I went through the book. I could not find any of our IITians name in that book. I read about a German Engineer who invented Diesel engine, committed suicide for not getting wide industrial acceptance for his invention then. To put it in a nut shell why torture our poor students. Academic brilliance has nothing to do with intelligence. To answer one or two questions from a particular topic a child has to do 20,000 or even more problems. Let me cut a joke - if money is the aim then it is better to follow Adani or Ambani. Both of them are not Engineers, I think. I strongly believe that a lot of Engineers are working for them.

@@MrAnurag1411 yep, and I didn't let that become my identity. The director is true in saying that a day long paper cannot and should not decide your identity. The exam itself doesn't decide whether your brain is one of the "finer" ones. It's just an exam in the end. Society has made this a stupid game with stupid rewards where the prize is social stature.
