In this video, I explain the importance of a Continuous Crankcase Ventilation (CCV) system and how it works on the AMC 4.0L (and 2.5L). I replaced the grommets and elbows in the valve cover as seen on the 1996 - 2001 Jeep Cherokee. It's not a PCV system, but it doesn't really matter what you call it.

You'll have to either find a used one from a donor 4.0L, or make your own with universal oil rated hose. Note this rear hoses is different from 1996 - 1998/ 1999 - 2001 because of the different intake manifold.
After replacing the CCV stuff and valve cover gasket, I deleted the racing cone filter and performed an oil change, using Rotella T6 5W-40 Diesel Oil. www.amazon.com/Shell-Rotella-...
Also, DO NOT buy THIS set of fittings: www.amazon.com/dp/B08NSNPSGK?...
do NOT buy them, they are backwards - the metered hole is on the front and the open tube is on the back one. They're inverted. They will still work, but not as intended from the factory.

That engine with the two metered elbows looks familiar, I wonder where that came from...

As a longtime owner of several Jeeps through the years, I've done many of the repairs and upgrades as you. Even still, when you upload a new video, even on a topic I've personally tackled before, I still love to sit and watch just because they're usually so well produced. I will say your series on manual swapping the XJ was a lifesaver when I manual swapped my MJ last year, so I like to think my viewership kinda helps pay you back for the time you saved me. Sort of a digital "buy-you-a-beer" if you will. Peace my dude, gotta let me know if you ever swing over towards Nebraska in your travels.

Just wanted to comment that this video cleared up a mystery that occurred with my '01 XJ that I was unable to figure out at the time how it happened. In my routine maintenance, I mistakenly replaced the gray CCV valve with the open (non-orifice) black valve. That created a vacuum-leak like issue with improperly metered air entering the intake manifold and causing a high idle condition. I chased the problem for weeks, finally deciding, incorrectly, that I had a cracked exhaust manifold. While removing the intake manifold, the rear corner of the intake manifold fell off - it was cracked all the way through (likely due to over torqued nuts at the factory). Installed a new intake manifold and exhaust manifold, feeling confident I had discovered the vacuum leak problem. Naturally I hadn't because the problem the whole time was the incorrect CCV valve. Finally took the XJ to a mechanic because I couldn't find any source of a vacuum leak. After an hour ($90) he figured out the problem when he clamped down on the hose from the CCV valve to the intake manifold and the idle issue went away. That $6.50 incorrectly installed part ended up costing me 6 hours of time and $800 in parts (intake manifold, exhaust manifold, and exhausts downpipe). Lesson learned: if you better understand how the vehicle's systems actually work, you can save time and money when fixing problems.

I've always wanted to add an oil separator to my jeeps like I have on the cobra. Great video as always sir

Same here. Notably in my BMW, seeing oil in the charge pipe. 18psi of boost doesn’t really help the oil separation. And for the 4.0, smelling oil while at really high rpm with no smoke or visible leaks. I believe oil is getting consumed via the CCV system when it’s at high rpm. Would like to stop that ideally

Love this guy! I have converted two 2wd jeeps into 4wd in the last 5 years and man I wish I had this info when I did . I didn’t know about Jeeps until I bought my first one in 2019.

I got a set of the valve cover vents but they were swapped too where the tall vent had a wide open hole and the short one was metered. I opted to just swap them. So short one in back, tall one up front. Metered hose and open one are in the intended places, just looks a touch off. But works great

I prefer a touch of spray silicone for grommets vs hard plastic parts. One can lasts 20 years lol. Also great for lubricating window run channels and a great number of other things.

So what happens if you put the smaller hole in front instead of the rear is the engine will hiss for a few seconds when shutting it off, made that mistake myself, the sent me the opposite of factory the tall goes in front and short in rear unlike factory which is tall in rear short up front

Hey, not sure if you have info, but my 87 2.5 needs so lines redone, not sure what I should do. It doesn’t have a CCV orifice, just an open pipe, and parts stores list an PCV valve.

On Renix 2.5L, the rear hose is just a plain old hose that routes to the airbox, the front one is the valve. I'm not sure it really is a valve, it just has a mesh/ screen in it, and it plugs into the vacuum harness that routes to the throttle body

I'm now 800+ miles overdue for an oil change, and despite the usual ~2 quarts leaking out by now, the Diesel oil still maintains 30psi at idle. It's now been mixed with 2 quarts of synthetic 5W-30 to keep it at the fill line, and it looks pretty burnt but it still holds very good pressure. I may have to send a sample into Blackstone.
