Jeep Grand Cherokee 5.9 - NV3500 Manual swap quick overview.

This is a quick overview of my ZJ that I previously dropped a 5.9 into, but recently added a 5 speed manual NV3500 to. Both swaps were done using junkyard units/donor parts, and the occasional parts store brand parts to fill in the gaps.
This is NOT a "how to" video, and so that being said, leaves out a fair bit of explaination for the sake of holding viewer attention. (Crossmember relocation, transmission mount fabricating, exhaust hackjob, starter cable lengthening, CPS spacing, clutch pedal mounting, transfer case linkage fabrication, transfer case seal swap, driveshaft(s) fitting, transmission tunnel cover cutting, center console trimming/mounting, Clutch master/reservoir mounting, etc)

Hey It's me again, excellent video and entertaining. I remember I had a jeep grand cherokee 5.2 1998 automatic and it was a beast, its engine, its sound attracted people's attention and I bet yours is the same too. Before this, mine was a 97 5.2 automatic. It was a hell of a car even before this. But now people think they're racing a Jeep, and get a real surprise when it's a manual behind a 360 magnum. Even the sound attacts attention, but mainly that's the exhaust leak right now. I'm planning something different soon, tho. Stay tuned for that! haha.

In fact, it was a 1995 Gran Cherokee Laredo.

thanks so much! didnt seem like a lot til i saw that no one online was manual swapping the 5.9 and had only done 5.2s. its been done before, just not on youtube as far as i know or have seen. i need to get better at making videos so i can get it out there better haha.

@@5.9manualzj I think the biggest thing is just post post post. I can’t post enough and I need to make more videos. My editing is trash but I think it’s posting a lot of my swap and idle clips and stuff is what helps me grow. I was woundering why the jeep had such good acceleration, now I know lol. I bet it’s fun to drive

also, everyone builds these things like porches. i want mine to be a 90s muscle car/station wagon thats like dirt-capable. not a monster truck. so there is a lot less help in the way of forums and stuff for using these as cars.

@@texastrucks7204 hell yeah. this thing has been the most fun ive had in my entire life and it only has like 250hp lmao. looking to get a LSD rear end, and a clean exhaust on it asap. just found headers that will fit according to forums, but the center dumps are gonna make everything super hard since the front axle is solid.

Yes. this is a bit easier to do with the 5.2 than it was for me with the 5.9 cause i had to find an externally balanced flywheel that would fit the NV3500 which was never put behind the 5.9. the transmission was from a first gen dakota 318 manual 4x4. the Nv3500 from that specific dakota has the shifter 7" back where it will fit the zj body cutout without really any trimming required. the ram nv3500 has it 7" ahead where it will need cutting and a sort of remote bracket/z bar to fit

Have collected all the parts for this swap except the clutch pedal. I've been reading and seems like most are converting XJ pedals, but did your video say you used a TJ pedal? I was wondering if that might be easier.. how far off was the pedal to make work? Im pretty sure I found a 5.9 gas flywheel that will work, but haven't ordered it to check/verify. I still need to pull apart the dakota I purchased first.

the TJ clutch pedal was really close to the brake and i had to cut it to fit the bracket. i got a bracket from James at StickShiftZJ and it worked for a year or two, but i ended up finding a donor 5spd and got the clutch pedal and stuff off of it later.

@@5.9manualzj Ya, I've seen all his videos, and I e-mailed him to buy the stuff he has for the swap, but I keep getting message undeliverable. My 5.2 is toast and my buddy parted out a 5.9 limited, so taking that motor and bought a running driving Dakota with a 5.2/nv3500. Seems you've come quite aways with yours. Nice job.

I need help I’m basically trying to figure out if I wanna put a 5.2 or a 5.9 in my 98 zj. But I don’t know how to swap. I wanna learn but I also need help and some pointers. Think you can point me in the right direction?

hi there! awesome job! i just granaded my shift kitted 44re. at this point i don't know what to do...rebuilding the 44re with stronger internals, full manual valve body and high stall...or swap an ax 15.

The AX15 for sure. Admittedly the automatic is faster to 60 (may not be with the AX15 vs the NV3500, because the gearing is wider) but the manual is 12x as fun, and the immediate torque gain is insane.

I just watched some of your videos, and realized I had watched a lot of them already years ago. Crazy to see you commenting on my video! Anyway, the 5.9 wasn't supposed to handle the NV3500. I'm not saying it'll hold up, but I know of a guy with a 72ish charger that has a slightly built 5.9 magnum and an AX15. But if fabrication isn't really something you like, or can do, I wouldn't try manual swapping. Nearly everything had to be built for this to work. Not sure if the AX15 is different, but good luck!

@@4x4ManiacBadTimeGarage The NV3500 is a little more resilient behind a 5.9, but it isn't perfectly safe. especially a built 5.9 would probably trash it after a while. I'm worried about my own, and it's bone stock. I've seen someone put an NV3500 behind their 6.0 LS in a silverado, but it didn't last long, and shot the clutch through the windshield. But he was also banging around 8k rpm on the thing, so its really up to you.

@@4x4ManiacBadTimeGarage kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nb6Tl66W0eCbaIU.html this guy's channel has other videos of the NV3500 in action, and they show some pretty rough driving, but the truck got 4L80E swapped due to the clutch failing. This was also a GM NV3500. I don't think there's much of a difference besides the gear ratios.

did you use the electric fan that came on the factory 5.9 zj or just the regualr clutch style?

Off the line, this is a Laredo, and it came stock with the clutch style cooling fan. I haven't gotten around to changing it over yet. the only things I've gotten to swap in so far, especially since I'm on a mad budget with the baby and all: •5.9 •Nv3500 •NP231 D (it had to be used with the transmission) •5.9 Ram PCM (CEL is the extra O2 sensor ram looks for but jeep didnt come with) If I can ever find a donor, or what have you, I want the Limited Slip rear end, and fans off of a 5.9 ZJ. but these things are getting kinda popular all of a sudden, and things for it aren't as cheap as when I bought it at first.

Cool vid (and we don't care about your nails ☺️). Routing the exhaust pipe under the pan is not a long term good idea because it will heat up your engine oil. If you do that, I suggest to wrap the section under the engine with thermo tech heat shield band.

brakleen is a bitch to any nail polish haha 😅 - and yeah since I'm not lifting it, i'm not so sure where the exhaust can go long term besides where it is. I went with a center dump on the driver's side to accomodate the new starter location, and the downpipe comes down right before the sump, and bridges over, and goes to the stock cut off Y pipe. the snapchat drawing isnt entirely accurate as far as long term placement, but the idea is where I'm going with the setup. ~ thanks for your interest, view, & comment!

it's about 3" or more away from the pan. but I'll still probably heat wrap it when it's done.

@@5.9manualzj a thin metal heat shield adsorbs the radient heat from the pipe and gives up its collected heat to the air flow. as long as it doesnt touch the pan.your good to go!

So for one to put a 5.9 in you would just need the flywheel from the 5.2?

no. the flywheel was tricky. the 5.9 is externally balanced, and the 5.2 is not. almost every 5.9 flywheel i found seemed to be for a cummins, or nv4500 or whatever. but interestingly, i was able to buy the one i did find that would fit, and be for the 5.9 at like, auto zone. just a regular ol part number.
