Like many of you out there with a Jeep JL Wrangler, built up or stock, we developed a bit of wobble in our steering. It's one that mainly occurred when it's cold out and when driving over uneven pavement or hitting something like a pot hole with just one tire. Now, I should point out that what we've been feeling is FAR from being the infamous "death wobble", the violent and uncontrollable shaking of the entire Jeep and to the point where you can only stop it by bringing your Jeep to a stop. However, I can totally see how someone new to Jeeps might confuse it as being death wobble especially being that it does feel like the beginnings of it. Because a loose bolt or worn out track bar bushing is typically the cause something like this, that's where we decided to start focusing our attention. In this episode of the JL JOURNAL, you'll get to see what the wobble we had looked like and how we were able to work most of it out, if not all of it, simply by installing a new Rancho rockGEAR adjustable front track bar. We hope you find the information in this video to be useful.
I should note that we are by no means suggesting that the source of our steering wobble will be the same for everyone or that installing a Rancho adjustable front track bar will fix whatever you are feeling. This video was made simply to show what we had experienced, what we had tried and ultimately, what got things fixed for us.

Well, glad we could be of some help. Like the JL, I would start by checking your track bar bolts to make sure they're tightened to 125 ft. lbs. of torque. If all is good, I've always found the JK track bars to be good so I would move over to your ball joints and unit bearings. Depending on how little back spacing you're running on your wheels, they can cause both to wear out prematurely and they will cause this too.

What I have also found that really helps with all those wobbles is to replace all the stock metric bolts in the entire suspension with 9/16" dia bolts that have an actual shank. All the holes are actually sized for a 9/16" bolt, but for some reason Jeep goes with an ever so slightly smaller metric diameter that allow for too much wiggle. Those metric bolts are also fully threaded. The fully threaded bolts cut into your inner races on the rod ends causing early wear. By using a 9/16" dia. bolt with a full shank you eliminate both of those issues.
@wayalife
@wayalife 5 жыл бұрын
I couldn't disagree more. There a reason why something like a pencil doesn't fall if you hold it between your fingers. Bolts are rated in terms of torque and NOT sheer for a reason. So long as your bolts are tightened to the appropriate torque AND your bushings aren't worn out or bad, you shouldn't have any problems.
@phantumdrummer
@phantumdrummer 5 жыл бұрын
@@wayalife I'm NOT talking about installing super high strength bolts in place of the stock rated bolt. I'm saying to install a bolt that actually fits the hole that is provided to reduce the excessive slop within the whole. The provided stock bolts are not even close to the correct dia. for the hole they are used in. Also there is a huge reason we in aviation don't use fully threaded bolts in high stress areas. That is because they do so much damage to the bushings.
@wayalife
@wayalife 5 жыл бұрын
phantumdrummer a 10.9 bolt is STRONGER than a grade 8. There are literally over 2 million JKs on the road today. If the bolt size were truly as much of a problem as you imagine them to be, there would be a ton of JKs with serious problems out there. Of course, this is NOT the case. I’ve been running factory bots on all of my JKs and for well over 12 years and with ZERO problems.

I had the same wobble. I changed the track bar into the steersmarts. It masked the problem a little bit. It started doing it again so I added more caster and it fixed it. Took out the steering stabilizer to see movement clearly. I hit every pothole and speed bumps I could find. Now the wheel centers itself much better and the wobble is gone. I have yet to re-install my stabilizer since it drives way better. 😂 My fix was to center the axle and increase caster.

My aging TJ's death wobble was cured with four new ball joints, an adjustable trackbar, caster adjusting bolts, and lots of love. The new part installation was easy. The adjusting of the angles was a bit tricky. But true love conquered death wobble. Today, we continue our long trek together after having stayed the horrible course of death wobble / death rattle. It was a labour of true love to treat my beloved completely alone. Many times both of us wanted to give up and just let my beloved retire and become a parts donor to other ailing Jeeps. She had other issues that needed to be addressed. But none took priority over curing death wobble. She felt it was time to die after being with me since 1996. But I told her I was not ready to stop loving her yet. I am glad I did not give up. Today, my dear Windi drives and runs like new once more. My love for her conquered the ravages of time and death wobble.

Wayalife well I put some beedlocks which are 17x9 3.5 back spacing and a -44 . So I’m pretty sure those will wear out the stock JKUR ball joints. Plus what I like about the Dynatrac ball joints is that you can rebuild them without having to take them completely out. I just figure that if I’m replacing stuff I might as well upgrade it. That’s why I like your videos because I learn stuff.

Stock steering stabilizer is garbage, get the teraflex 2.1 or 2.2 and your problems will be solved. I use the 2.2 in the softest setting which is essentially the 2.1. Best decision i ever made, the wobble is gone.

Couldn't disagree with Angel Rodriguez more. There's NOTHING wrong with the stock steering stabilizer and if anything, I've always found Teraflex products to be junk and I've run a ton of their junk in the past. The root cause of bump steer shimmy is always loose bushing, can be track bar bushing or drag link bushing or both. Stiff steering stabilizer will help "grip" the bushing, therefore prolong the life of factory steering components, however will not solve the root cause.

@@wayalife Well sure it will. Almost any worn components will, especially when you add oversize tires. I'm talking about brand new jeeps with less than 4000 miles on stock tires getting death wobble. The dealership's only fix is to install larger steering stabilizers, when it's the junk joints and bushings causing the problem. A bigger stabilizer will only mask the problem for so long before it weakens. Anytime you upsize tires you have to upsize everything else or you'll have problems.

I'm no expert but, it seems the front "track"would want to be measured center of the frame vs. the body fenders. Or in relation to the rear track center. Also, the track mount mounts on the left frame rail are known to be fairly weak as the welds and bracket are not all that sturdy for large tires/wheels.
@wayalife
@wayalife 5 жыл бұрын
The track bar mount breaks that were reported on were an exception and not the rule. FCA has long since addressed it and there are plenty of people running 37's or even 40's on a JL and without any issues. Regarding track bars, they attach on one side of your Jeep and on the other side on your axle. Load up your Jeep with passengers, gear and a full gas tank and your axles will shift - to the passenger side up front and the driver side in the rear. Same is true if you completely unload your Jeep and remove the doors and hard top - your axles will shift the other way. It's just the nature of the beast when it comes to solid axles and track bars and there's NEVER a dead center. And really, it doesn't even matter.
